It was nice to see two left handed pitchers throwing harder than 87 on our team tonight.

I hear what you're saying, but Boogie was throwing with an injury ALL year (post season surgery) and was a pretty good stop gap (4-2) on a team that couldn't find 3 weekend starters.

The two best players on the field were Jared Spencer and Ruger Riojas and they both wore other jerseys last year.

And it still wasn’t enough for a Friday, just wait until Sat and Sun. I think we are in agreement that transfers can only plug so many holes and years of high school recruiting is the only thing that can remedy Pierce’s malpractice

It’s almost like we lose in these opening season tourneys every year. I would have been more surprised if we’d won.

It’s not a 3 year rebuild. You can scream it at the top of your lungs and just look dumber every time you do it. Get a fucking grip.

If anything, this is basically the best we’ve ever played in that stadium this early in the season. I think. Probably

I dunno about that. The defense was suspect, bats couldn’t hit, and we couldn’t get outs late in the game. If anything this was about how we always play in these tournaments, at least for game 1

The guy that just took fucking aggy to the championship series shouldn't need to throw 2 seasons away at Texas to get things going. Pierce made a regional final his first season after we missed the tournament and then made the CWS in year 2 - and got fired for losing a super then losing in regionals.

I don't think anyone expects this team to contend nationally in year 1 but to think that they can't be competitive is silly. Unless you think we have less on the roster than all 38 CWS teams did. Preseason we were picked as high as 7 and no lower than 19. So at least one publication thought we have the gas to flirt with the CWS. Making a super would be a good season for these guys and should be obtainable.

Wut? Spencer, Riojas, Winfield, Mendoza. What are you talking about. If it takes 3 years to rebuild then Schloss is the wrong guy.

The way everyone was acting with the portal pickups under schloss I was expecting more than 2 runs. Best part about baseball is you get a game the next day to fix it. If we’re averaging 2 runs a game after 10 games then I’d be very concerned for the season.

It was just nice to see our pitching staff not have like 15 3-0 counts because they're all trying to nibble around the plate.

This ^.

Spencer and Riojas were definitely attacking the zone. Mercer did not look bad overall either. The double that scored their first two runs wasn't overly bad, maybe a bit high and the guy made good contact. Sometimes, that's the way baseball go.

Listening to what Schloss said pregame and postgame on the radio and you can tell he is not thrilled that he inherited this tournament on the schedule. Said Texas isn’t afraid to play anyone but we should always be opening at home in basically a tuneup series and that “we’ll see what he is talking about after this first year in the SEC”.

Then said after the game that we “didn’t open with some team up north who hasn’t been outside in months.”

He definitely doesn’t sugarcoat much.

louisville put together some good hits at the plate, fought back

ut bats were zzzz

We didn't open with some school from the north that hasn't been outside in months seems like a pretty lame excuse.

Yeah I get what he was trying to say but not something I would say after a loss like that.

Good. Maybe that gets us another series here at home in the future.

The nice thing about baseball is we always have another game coming up very soon, so the over-reactions to every game don't last long.

was this really 12 loses in a row, in mlb stadiums ?

i thought ut beat lsu 4 years back at minute maid ?

hahaha

With the loss tonight, Jim Schlossnagle joins Cliff Gustafson, Augie Garrido and David Pierce as Texas head coaches to lose their first game in charge.

Blair Cherry was the last to record a win in 1943.

Texas went 2-1 in Minute Maid in 2022 and 1-2 in Minute Maid in 2020, but I know we are 0-7 in Arlington ( didn't look back further than 2020

I got the count at 12 straight at MLB stadiums and 8 straight at globe life.

2022 Big 12 championship- L to OU

2023 opening weekend- 3 L’s

2023 Big 12 tournament- 2 L’s

2024 Houston tournament- 3 L’s

2024 Big 12 tournament- 2 L’s

Seriously I fucking hate the early season tournaments.
So of my favorite times as a kid were the cold February games at Disch against Loyola or Concordia.

I also hate that the schedule is moved back to accommodate the northern schools. It puts the regionals in the south right into rainy season.

Yep. I Don't care if we play a smaller school to start off the season. Other schools do it and we used to do it too also. Could get one more home series or possibly two if not traveling to California.

And move the season back to February 1, the smaller schools still open then.

If the northern whiny schools of Michigan and the like don't like playing in the cold, then build a fucking dome for your program or just do like you did for years and play early in southern cali or Arizona. Moving the season back two weeks was total bullshit. Still pissed about that.

My expectation is that we improve from whatever we start as, and with recruiting and portal additions following the season we are good to be contenders in 26.

His path at aggy was good in year 1, bad in year 2, and then great in year 3.

we will see how the Texas brand and NIL can help shrink that timeline.

All the strikeouts may be the most disappointing. You don't put any pressure on teams when you can't put the ball in play.

Quotes.  Will see about Mercer,  I sure like Riojas as a closer with his UTSA experience.

Give Louisville credit,  like the Cali teams a bunch of scrappers.   Don't try to do too much,  good approach at the plate.  K'd 13 times but 9 of those were by 2 players.

Limiting Spencer to 67 pitches in 5 2/3 was great.

"It's a long season," Schlossnagle said. "We'll see how we respond to it. It's one game, one weekend. It's not going to define anything about our team. We're trying to learn about our team, and we're trying to win. We'll be fine."

"We're trying to figure out who's who, and Mercer, we've been working with him at closing out games," Schlossnagle said. "I think he'll do great. He's going to have a great year as long as he handles this fine."

"Max (Weiner) has done a great job with him. Strength coach has done a great job with him. He's got pitches he didn't have at Indiana State, threw a really good change-up today, held his velocity deep into the game," Schlossnagle said. "If we can keep getting that effort and then build his endurance up, we might have a pretty good Friday night starter in the SEC."

It never made any sense to change the season for the cold weather teams. Baseball is a spring and summer sport.
No one is asking them to change the ice hockey season.

Spencer looked really good. Like legit Friday night good. If Harrison can be a legit Saturday guy then I think everything else will be just fine.

Even if not perfect having a first three of Riojas, Duplantier, and Mercer is a pretty strong core for the bullpen.

Which would be pointless but easy since I’m pretty sure all the hockey programs play indoors.

Obviously. But I think you understand the point.

Aiden Moffet is still a big wildcard for this staff. The LSU transfer has as good of stuff and velocity as anybody.

Command was his drawback with the Tigers. He had it in the Alumni game and looked unhittable.

It will be interesting to see how he is used, whether as a starter or out of the pen.

This is the guy I was telling you about from Realstream Hub, he should be welcomed.

They do a great job over there, and everyone should join and support their site.

Thanks, ft420, I hope you will be as welcome here as you have made me for years on your site.
