February 16Feb 16 Would still like to see Schloss scrap Kimble at leadoff. I am curious as to the reasoning behind the decision.

He was the best hitter all fall on the team and at the end of last season. He's playing first to get his bat in the lineup. I think he is leading off so he can get as many at bats as possible. It's certainly not his great speed.

He wants a high OBP guy up there with some pop. He had Grahovac lead off for A&M much of last year. The only other options that make sense are Mendoza (13 walks all last season), Winfield (strikeout prone) and Rodriguez (freshman). I guess maybe Farmer too but small sample size. Rodriguez seems like an obvious choice once he has some more AB’s under him if he shows he can handle it and cut down on the swing and miss.
February 16Feb 16 I watched the entire game on my phone in the NB Unicorns gym while at a HS/MS dance competition. Yall can thank me for my sacrifice. 8 hours sitting in bleachers is not good for the back, or butt, or knees, or anything. Anyone who's been to those things knows how brutal they are.

That’s why I would love to hear his reasoning because putting a Clydesdale at leadoff isn’t my cup of tea. Love everything about Kimble but the speed. I guess we will see if it becomes a moot point.

Kimble had more walks Mendoza had less strikeouts. May end up being a moot point would like more speed up there but just my personal preference. I remember Jared hit .200 his 1st month as a Freshman batting in the bottom 1/3 of the order and then conference play hit and it was like a light switch flipped. Got bumped to leadoff shortly after. Hopefully could see something similar with Rodriguez preferably skipping over the hittting .200 for a month part Edited February 16Feb 16 by chase25

So at some point in yesterday's game, the announcers were talking about Kimble's speed. I had to do a double take. Anyone else catch that?
February 16Feb 16 Schloss has never been a speed at the leadoff spot guy. Last year aggy rolled with Grahovic and the catcher. Luken Baker used to lead off for TCU
February 16Feb 16 We should probably get a fast guy who can hit, and put him leadoff. It's a new concept and I'm just playing with it for now, but hear me out.

The last couple years we’d blow games with a bunch of pitchers who couldn’t get near the strike zone. We may lose a couple more heartbreakers this year, but I don’t think control will be the issue and that’s much more easier to stomach.

February 16Feb 16 Schloss getting tired of the noise. Wants to coach ball. When the camera has close-ups, you can see the concentration and determination. Not nervous energy. Quote "I know everybody's made a whole lot of the Texas thing, but I'm past that," Schlossnagle said. "I'm coaching a baseball team at a great school. I've coached at some awesome places and honored to coach at all of them. This is not about a coach, it's about our players getting the chance to get their season off to a positive start." https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/baseball/2025/02/16/texas-vs-ole-miss-game-score-baseball-luke-harrison/78384815007/
February 16Feb 16 Interested to see Bing tonight. Similar profile to Harrison. 88-90ish, strike thrower. Only 12 walks in 70 innings last year.

He doesn’t strike out much and can get around on basically any fastball. Winfield is the only hitter we have with traditional leadoff stuff but he seems to K a lot. We aren’t going to run so have Kimble there makes sense.

Augie moved Peoples to the leadoff spot and Stubbs back despite Stubbs having plus plus speed. Your leadoff man needs to not strikeout and get on base.

People that prefer college baseball over MLB or refused to get on the mlb bandwagon after they solved baseball (at least at that level) refuse to get rid of the paradigm they grew up with in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. Most people hate change. hell- you are almost there but still got it wrong- as the strikeouts aren’t even really particularly all that important- he really just needs to get on base a shit ton.
February 16Feb 16 The new trend is hitting your best all-around guy second in the order, right? Conventional wisdom says you want them to get as many AB’s as possible. I wonder if Belyeu could end up there at some point this year. The small ball game under Augie and to a lesser extent under Pierce meant we usually had a guy who could bunt and handle the bat well in the 2 spot.
February 16Feb 16 There may be a “fast enough” involv d, like fast enough to score from 2nd on a routine single or something. Maybe not even that- pure obp. Martin, iirc, used to hit jd drew leadoff and his answer when asked was he wanted his best hitter getting the most PAs.

Strikeouts are still important in college baseball. This isn’t MLB and defenses are suspect.

Makes no sense having Belyeu at 4 especially when it’s Farmer hitting behind him. Takes ABs away and leaves him with little protection

If he has really high OBP it can offset a higher SO guy I suppose.

But even still you aren’t talking about a total and complete circus all the time. It’s a negligible difference and shouldn’t be dispositive. Same as bunting. It’s less bad in NCAA than in MLB because of the reason you said- but it still not great. my Buddy who is a d1 manager has completely shifted his view in the last 5 years. Hated strikeouts. Shrugs his shoulders now as long as the guy hits the ball hard, which is what his metrics and numbers say is the most important thing at the ncaa level, and hitting the ball hard and striking out is generally correlated.

February 16Feb 16 I think there's more value in having a guy with power at the leadoff spot that can drive a get over fastball out of the yard
