I took the afternoon off yesterday and went and saw this in the theatre and thought it was fantastic.  Not flawless, but very, very good.  Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce were both great, the story was interesting enough to keep my attention, and the film was beautifully shot and put together.  I loved that there was an intermission in the middle and really hope other 3+ hour movies start following suit.   It really makes the thought of going to the theatre and watching an epic much more feasible than having to sit still/avoid going to the bathroom for 3 and half hours.

I've only seen one other 2024 Academy Award nominee (Conclave), but this felt like an obvious best picture winner to me.  I highly recommend it.

You didn’t catch Dune 2 in the theatre?

I thought the first half was remarkable. For me, the second half just didn’t work on a number of levels, but I love the swing and hope everyone goes to see it in the theater.

The score is really top notch.

The first half is some of the best cinema in a long time. The second half goes off the rails but I'm glad it's there. I like that the director tried it. I think it just went too hard in an absurd fashion. It was a bit of "oh they're not going there, OH THEY DID". I did not like the dinner scene. All of that said, it was the first movie in a while that I thought about days later and searched out analysis on. The quarry shot is just breathtaking. The cinematography is top notch. I wish I could've seen it in the intended format.

I would have no issue if it or Anora wins Best Picture. I would recommend checking out Anora.

This is all correct.

I heard Adam Newman on The Big Picture refer to one scene in particular (you know the one) as a “metafive”, as opposed to a metaphor, due to how on the nose it was.

Not sure if projector was 70 mm where we saw it but it was still impressive. We saw it at Alamo LH.

VistaVision and on 35mm. I think Alamo LH is all digital.

I wish I saw it at the Texas Theater when it was playing there because they definitely have 35mm projectors.

  • 1 month later...

watched this tonight. kept my attention throughout, which i wasn't sure it would, but it didn't drag at all. i kept waiting for The Horrible Thing to happen and then i was all 'holy shit not that horrible thing 😮' lol.

the lady speaking at the end was older Zsofia, but her daughter looked like the same actress that played the young Zsofia... did i hallucinate that?? i was very confused there for a minute.

it kind of reminded me of The Master. music, cinematography, and acting Oscars all well deserved, even if Brody is a self-important windbag haha.

Dune 2 is still best movie of the year for me.
