For me it was at the tail end of Covid and our youngest son had been stuck in Spain lockdown for military duty for almost 2 years.  We got him home and I worked it out with wife's bosses that she would have a week off-  that was the biggest risk, as they were trying informally check on things in preparation for her being gone, without letting the cat out of the bag.  By some miracle, it we pulled it off.  I told her I was going to the store, went to airport and got son and then dropped that on her.  Oh...and the next day, then we went to his older brother's place in Missouri for a few days.  I doubt I can ever remotely approach how awesome that was because of all of the emotions involved.  100% surprise element.  100% execution by all involved.

Now, for the past 6 months, the wife has been very politely asking for a Peloton Treadmill to go with her bike.  She runs 3-5x per week, but often opts for other cardio because of weather and increasingly, dogs roaming the neighborhood.  We also have just recently got some important news regarding my employment, and had previously had to consider the possibility of moving. I didn't want to move that sumbeech. Her birthday is in the next week and our anniversary is middle of March.  All of these factored in my choice to pull the trigger on getting the Tread about 2 weeks ago.  She very, very rarely asks for anything like this, so it was not the end of the world if we didn't get it- first world problems and all.

So they delivered the Tread and set it up just now and everything is ready for when she gets home from work.  I covered up the Ring camera this morning because of some ' very important meetings' at work.  She still has ZERO idea.  I can't wait till she sees it.

What is the best surprise you ever gave someone, or what were factors of difficulty/ secrecy that made it special?

I surprised my family in Florida with a brief visit last year with my eldest child.  To have more fun with them,  I sent my kid to the door and he tried to sell them some Oreo cookies that he had.  My father, predictably answered the door, didn't recognize him, and declined.    My kid came back to me laughing.   I sent him back there with another item, but my mother and sister who kept reviewing the image decided it was my boy and welcomed him in.   A bunch of other family came in that weekend so they all got to individually enjoy the prank.

Your dad didn't recognize his own grandson?

No.  He only has two grandsons, but I knew he wouldn't.   It was near breakfast time, and I predicted that my mom/sister wouldn't answer the door, and he really doesn't like door-to-door solicitors.  I figured the box of cookies would be a distraction for him and he would look at that while only thinking about how he could get rid of this and go back to whatever he was doing.   In this case, he just sat down for breakfast.

Surprise 30th bday party for my wife.  She was working at a brewery at the time, and had to work the night of her birthday, which happened to be a Saturday.  I talked to her boss and asked her if she could get the night off after we got there, and her boss was down with it.  So I got a party bus and invited a bunch of friends and family.  We showed up at the brewery a couple hours into her shift and she about dropped dead from the shock.

No, I didn't get a blowjob out of the deal.

But you did get a baby. Almost as nice, but way more expensive.

Well yeah, and that was because I jerked off in a cup 5 years later.

I sort of did the same when proposing to the wife. I had asked her boss if she could have a week vacation after the proposal about a month beforehand. My wife's boss forgot and called her on Monday of the vacation week asking if she was ok and why she was late. She remembered after she told her but had made zero plans for covering for her.

My mom’s 70th birthday in 2019 I brought her up to New York for a week. On her birthday I took her to the Bronx Zoo in the morning and then that evening I took her to see her Yankees play the Rangers. She was happy just going to a game for her birthday, especially since the home state Rangers were the opponent. She always roots for Texas if they aren’t playing the Yankees. What I didn’t tell her is I made the charitable contribution that allows you to put a message up on the Jumbotron in the 5th inning for birthdays and anniversaries. I put her first and last name and then my younger brother’s name and mine at the end of the message. We were out in Section 203 in right field so she had a clear view when I said “Oh look it’s all the birthday messages they put up every game.” She looks up and hears her name over the PA and lets out the loudest scream I have ever heard from my mom. Everyone around her wished her a happy birthday and she said later on that this was the best birthday of her entire life.

I had attempted to get video of it, but the phone I had at the time was brand new and I hit the wrong button and recorded none of her reaction. I actually think that is better because it’s seared into my memory how she reacted and it also reminded me that not every cool moment in life needs to have a picture or video to remember it.

Over the past few years, I have stopped recording all of my kids shows and performances.   I realized I started watching them through the device instead of with my own eyes, and so I have largely stopped doing this.   I may take a photo or two or a short video for family, but I largely just want the experience.

When I was in high school I organized a charity/ event thingy for a local family. Single mother with 4 kids who also kept her sister's three kids (sister was in jail). "Struggling " doesn't even begin to describe it. Invited the family to a Christmas get together. Secretly a couple dozen of us had been raising funds for weeks and buying all 7 kids a shitload of gifts. Had a tree set up, all the gifts wrapped, and everyone brought food. Family showed up to a Christmas celebration that was 100% for them. One of the most meaningful days of my life.

My conception.

Son?

My wife never saw her engagement ring coming.

I proposed to her sitting on the same two barstools where we had met 2.5 years prior. We were the only two in the place then. But now there were 300 people, sports playing, and a dude warbling over his acoustic guitar.

She did everything in her power to (unknowingly) prevent it. Worked late, didn’t wanna go out, didn’t wanna dress up; but I somehow guilted her into hustling up and heading out.

Friends with cameras were lurking, the singer stopped, and a staff member walked by and dropped a wireless mic in the hand behind my back.

Got up, dropped to one knee, and did it.

That was December 2010. We were on the website for quite a while. It sucks that the place doesn’t exist anymore, but we still have the pics, some shirts, and a few koozies.

We got married in June on the 3rd anniversary of the day we met. Freakin’ Juneteenth, too, so now our anniversary is a federal holiday.

The place was Scuttlebutts on Padre Island, by the way.

Realized this on a whale watching cruise a few years ago. One of God’s great creations and I’m too busy to be in awe of them through an iPhone camera.
