February 20Feb 20 Fascinating story that was declassified 30 years ago. The CIA "borrowed" a Soviet satellite that was on a world tour one night in Mexico City. There, the satellite was disassembled, photographed and whatnot...put back together and crated back up. The Soviets were not aware of what happened. Here's a great writeup from MIT https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/01/28/1016867/lunik-cia-heist-steal-russian-satellite-space-us-ussr/ Announced last November, a movie is being made of this event. Hopefully, they don't screw it up, because this has incredible potential: https://www.space.com/space-exploration/launches-spacecraft/lunik-heist-a-real-life-cia-rocket-kidnapping-goes-to-hollywood#:~:text=The film is based on,1959 expo in Mexico City. Quote Now in the works is a retro look back in time at a bizarre Cold War caper by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) thanks to a forthcoming, star-studded comedy/drama movie called "Lunik Heist." Earlier this month, Searchlight Pictures, a Disney-owned division, announced that actors Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong'o, and John Mulaney have signed on to star in "Lunik Heist," described as a "a wild, roller-coaster ride, filled with subterfuge and unlikely heroes." The film is based on a real-life incident that saw CIA operatives plot to disassemble and inspect one of the Soviet Union spacecraft overnight while on exhibit during a 1959 expo in Mexico City.
