Wednesday afternoon Buddy went to the vet for the last time.  Buddy was a sixteen year old terrier mix who had been in pain since he spent two nights in the animal hospital in January.  Only 2nd time I have put a dog down, and this was much worse than the first time.  Favorite recent memory of Buddy was the other night, his last night, he went to the dog park, was taken off the leash, roamed around the park for a bit and walked back to the apartment off the leash. Blindness didn't stop him from knowing how to get back home.  Admittedly a short walk, still impressive for a dog who couldn't get up with 100% consistency.

Also a fond memory is that when my dad came to visit recently Buddy got really close to my dad, sat next to him on the couch and was totally enamored with him.  I called my dad to tell him and cried again on the phone with my dad.

Buddy was ours since my younger son picked him out in 4th grade.  We had 15 years and four months with Buddy.  My son will be 27 years old next month.  The son came over Tuesday night to say goodbye.  Buddy was a good traveler, he went from McKinney to Alaska for three years to Euless and finally San Antonio.

He couldn't get up by himself anymore, etc. and was in a lot of pain.  No more pain Buddy.   Go chase those squirrels in heaven Buddy.

Dogs are always so good to us.  "Man's best friend" moniker is well deserved.

This one has always stuck with me...   " I hope to be the person my dog thinks I am. "

So long, Buddy.  May there always be game for you to chase and a hole to dig.

Food and travel for the dog recipes?

I've only had one dog in my life.  I had never heard about the Rainbow Bridge poem before I had to let my Chela go. Someone shared it with me, and It still brings me peace 10 years later.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I knew the phrase Rainbow Bridge never read that before.   A littly dusty in here.

All our dogs will be there to greet us when our time comes.  I take comfort in that.  Sorry you went thru that but dogs endure, and he loved you to his final moment.  He’s in your heart living only his best days.

Sorry for your loss, JGray. When my dog died about a year ago, it was one of the saddest moments of my life (which I realize is just an insane thing to be true, but it is). As many will say, remember the great times and be glad you got such a long ride!

I’m kinda torn. When my pups pass, I also don’t want them to stay dogs that have to serve me forever. I’d like to think they somehow graduate to a higher life form and get released so we can have a toast somewhere. But then I’d also always miss them when they went their way. Or maybe they just go where you believe and that’s all that matters.

To  all those that have gone before, and to all those loyal waggers to the end, we forever solute you, for all the treasures you brought daily. You galant knights of the realm, go peacefully to chase whatever fancies you now have with the sky as your limit.

RIP Buddy. This is my hope.

RIP Buddy.  Glad you got so much time with him.  I've been there and it hurts as much as losing any other family member.

Just read all replies....Thanks so much everyone. I just recently read about the Rainbow bridge also.  There will never be another Buddy for me.  16 years!  He certainly outlived all his peers.

If I ever give up on humanity we may just buy a tract of land and adopt the dogs people gave up on. Dogs are awesome, if I ever was able to believe in God again it will be a dog that leads me there.

There is a FB page for a dog hospice called Monkeys House. I've shed many tears over their posts but also been uplifted at the hope and help they provide to older dogs.

Sure will be nice to see Kassie, Sasha, Alex, Sammy, garrison, sierra, max, and livvy again.  Oliver is a puppy but he will be on the list at some point, and probably more names after him.  Sure will be nice. Just have to earn the right.

Neoghbor had a wonderful outdoor cat that basically lived around our house.  Super friendly, affectionate, took care of mice... always around.  We loved her very much and she was snatched by a coyote this week.  We're heartbroken.

I had to euthanize one of my animals a few years back.  I scheduled in home euthanasia, which I can't recommend enough.  The vet that provided that service offered me a grief packet.  One of the items in that packet was this Rainbow Bridge poem.  It's target audience appears to be 10 year old children but it still provided me with some comfort that morning.  A bit later that day, I'm in my backyard digging a hole as to bury my pet under their favorite tree.  In the process of digging that hole a rainbow appeared in the sky.  I'm not a religious man, but that event felt deliberate and was much appreciated during a time of suffering.

Dogs will be our best friends for a significant part of our lives... but we'll be their best friends for all of theirs.

I have had only 2 dogs both have passed. Now have 2 cats. Animals are just different, just loyal no matter what and I love that. My cat Louie wakes me up every morning. He comes up to my head and purrs. He doesn’t do that with anyone else. He’s my guy. I’m sorry for your loss. All dogs go to heaven
