Man, it really did.  Remember how we were all focused on it being "The summer of the shark!" because there were like, 4 shark attacks around the world that year?  Man, that was like watching re-runs of the Brady Bunch for the millionth time, but then, BAM...RATINGS BONANZA!  We've got crashing planes, and explosions, and people falling to their deaths!  RATINGS RATINGS RATINGS!  ENTERTAIN US MORE!

Me?   That's the factory floor supervisor's job.  Figure the beatings he'll administer will help motivate 'em, too.  That's a win-win.

Fareed Zakaria just nailed it.  This is the only time in recent memory that we've seen *all* of the markets (including commodities, etc.) lose their shit simultaneously like this other than the beginning of the pandemic and the '08 financial crisis.  But in those cases, there was a real crisis.  This is an own goal.

I always like the bullshit commercials that throw out 'in this economy' regardless of what is actually happening with the economy. Just a perpetual rolling commercial forever.

i think part of why people thought the economy sucked was the incessant ads about "due to the decline in the economy, the IRS is blah blah" and because they heard it on the radio for the last 16 years they thought all those years had a declining economy.

Edit: after today, down 15.97%

Where do middle/upper middle class Americans have their wealth? Their:

A. 401k
B. House

What we are seeing now is the initial campaign to weaken A and reduce the wealth of a large swath of the population. That will lead to taking of B.

This will be done in the next step, probably starting as soon as 2026. To “fix” things there will be some plan to “rebuild” the economy by having homeowners sell their property back to the govt (administered of course by someone like Musk) in some kind of reverse mortgage scheme.

Its going to be something like:

“you will get x% of the value (that AI helps to decide) of your property in cash and then give you a monthly payout of $y (probably something like a social security amount) for the next z years (5 to 10).”

It will be celebrated as a windfall for everyone! Free cash!

After the time period, the govt will then own the property, the new housing agency will probably be quickly privatized for “efficiency” reasons. Properties can then be leased back to the previous homeowners at of course increasing higher prices. If you can’t pay, then of course there will be a new ICE like agency to remove you from the property and relocate you to other government housing (google Tesla’s foray into robot built tiny houses).

Well, I assuaged myself by flipping over to watch the aggy baseball team do its impression of the United States: they just got both run-ruled AND no-hit, losing to Tennessee 10-0. It was magnificent…until I realized the metaphor.

Exactly, what the Harris/Trump debate showed very clearly was that you could bait or otherwise manipulate Trump into anything.  It’s the people advising Trump and handing him executive orders to sign that you need to be worried about.

It's much simpler than that.

1. Have your hedge fund managers sell out of stocks.  Take your profits from the last few years and generate a shitload of cash.

2. Have your hedge fund managers use all that cash to speculate on stock market declines and rising volatility, knowing that you're about to create both in a big way.

3. Profit on the way down while everybody else suffers.

4. When it levels out, eventually, buy a ton of shares at 20-30% reduced prices.

5. Profit some more on the way back up while everybody else slowly gets back to even.

6. Repeat, probably.

This is what happens when a bunch of cons and grifters get control of of the biggest economy in the world.  It becomes their own personal shell game.

Just kidding, I hope it will come back quickly for all of us who have lost a ton of money.

We did an employee stock purchase this year at the great price of $16. Everyone was pitched at getting a great deal and to help fight off an acquisition.

It closed at $8 today

(It was over $100 during Covid)

I can beat that.

My BONUS for 2024 is high 5 figures of RSU's.

They are priced from an average of months ago. So I'm immediately 40% underwater on them when I recieved them yesterday and my Bonus was severely NERF'ed in the short term.

Feeling a little bit lucky when it comes to my 401K.  My company was sold last week to another company so I am in the process of rolling my entire 401K to a personal account meaning I took it out last week.  I haven’t gotten the money yet to move to my personal account so I basically avoided the shit show of that last few days.  Now as far as my other investments, yeah they got destroyed just like everybody else.
