After earlier reports egg prices were falling, the bird flu says hold my beer.

Egg prices increased to a record high in March, federal data shows. The Bureau for Labor Statistics (BLS) said the average cost of a dozen eggs hit $6.227 last month, a new high and up from $5.897 in February.

The supply of eggs has been hit hard by avian flu outbreaks, and the Trump Administration had warned that egg prices were likely to rise ahead of Easter. It has been trying to bring the price of eggs down by importing more from overseas.

Thats some fucking 8D chess, right there.

TRUMP: Egg prices are too high. Do something

TRUMP LACKEY: Sir....I found eggs in Europe. We can lower prices by importing eggs.

TRUMP: I suggest we find eggs in Europe and bring them in, so we can lower the prices. Can we find some eggs?

TRUMP LACKEY: Sir I just said, we located....never mind, we will bring in eggs from Europe. The magnificence of your brain truly knows no bounds, sir!

TRUMP: Now lets tariff those eggs!

For 25+ years now I've seen conservatives online whine about "unsustainable" deficits. Not once have I ever seen one who was able to explain the negative consequences they seemed to be so terrified of. Now, for the past 10-15 years or so, I've constantly seen those same conservatives cheerlead for actually imposing the very consequences they never understood that they were (erroneously) warning about when they whined about deficits.

They're just the dumbest fucking people alive.

Quoted for truth.  Deficits are "unsustainable" for people/entities with finite live spans and a defined income time period.   When an entity has a presumably endless payback time period, the benefit of inflation, and growing net income every year (not to mention the ability to make money out of thin air), the whole "this is unsustainable and needs to be run as a business!" is bullshit.   Is it good to run huge deficits?  No its not, but it is not all doom and gloom.  And if you actually are interested in reducing the number, maybe vote for the one party that has actually done that in our lifetimes.

As a recovering big "C" conservative... I'll take a stab.

We are poised to hit a couple of "not great" milestones in the next year or so.  We will in the near future 1) cross the 100% debt/GDP threshold and 2)have an annual outlay greater than $1T for interest payments on the national debt.  The $1T factoid is pretty much meaningless, except for the fact that we now have more than $1T that is not available to provide actual goods and services to our citizens.  The 100% debt to GDP ratio is concerning because it could be a trigger point for credit rating agencies to downgrade the US Govt's credit rating and shift to more negative outlooks.

The biggest concern is that interest as a share of the budget keeps growing.  In 2024, 13% of the Federal budget went to service the debt.  By 2035, that will be up to 16% ($1.783T).  Again... that will be 16% of our budget not providing benefits to our citizens, because no one has the political will to keep spending in line with revenues.

How far can we go and how big can the problem get before it becomes critical?  We don't really know... but we REALLY don't want to find out.

No argument there.  No one has shown the political will to actually address the issue.  But to be fair... we as an electorate have proven time and again that we will not keep anyone in office who actually tries to do something.

We are very likely turbo-fucked and riding this plane all the way to the crash site.

George HW Bush learned that (Read my Lips) and then Clinton actually reaped the benefit of the new taxes and reined in the deficit.

Loose loan policy under W and resulting bailouts plus the COVID welfare turbo fucked us.

I don't think that's true at all.  Clinton raised taxes, and he was reelected comfortably in 1996.

The key is that Clinton only raised taxes on the highest brackets.  So the vast majority of Americans saw no tax increase at all.  Combined with a growing economy, the increased revenue from those taxes allowed the federal government to run a budget surplus during the late 1990s.

And we can talk about the Election of 2000.  Let it suffice it to say that Gore won the popular vote.  It was hardly an electoral repudiation of Clinton's fiscal policy.

The reality is that if you confine tax increases to the top brackets, you can definitely ride a budget-saving fiscal policy to electoral victory.  The real problem for Democrats in the 21st Century has been that every time they take over the White House, they do so in the middle of an economic catastrophe that greatly restricts what fiscal policies they can enact.  It's really hard to raise taxes on anyone when you're just trying to recover from Republican-caused economic meltdowns.

Fuck, even if he was on to something, the "as long as there's no nuclear war" is doing some HEAVY lifting.

A big part of the reason we've avoided a nuclear war is because American hegemony has helped keep local rivalries (including potential wars) relatively under control.  And now?  We are disengaging, telling everyone out there "it's every man for himself," and pursuing policies and approaches that couldn't be better crafted to incentivize every country that can to obtain nukes.

Dimon...you're a fucking fool.  Not that it was in doubt, but he keeps removing any possible scintilla of doubt.

Dumb question amnesty as someone who's been stuck in work meetings until late the past few days and is finally coming up for air (although I may soon wish I was stuck in meetings without internet).  I thought there was a pause on tariffs for 90 days except for China.  Is that not true?  Cliffs Notes version.  I can't even figure out the answer to this via the NYTimes website or Google.

Nope - baseline 10% tariffs across the board are still in place in addition to the 125% China tariffs.  The press really fucking sucks these days. NPR does an okay job here:

Yep. And it is going to happen again.

The only saving grace is that Trump is causing this so early in his regime. So maybe by the time the Democrats have the burnt ashes of America around them, they won't be blamed for it this time.

Or not. This is probably all wishful thinking.

It's never going to change. Democrats have been the party of far more responsible spending for 50 years. Doesn't make a shit, morons still call republican "conservatives".

Democrats had full control of the 3 branches once from 2008 to 2010 and got the ACA and recovery from the recession out of it. In only 2 years. Doesn't matter, idiots vote Republicans in again and again after that.

Americans are brainwashed morons who can't critically analyze anything. There's no incentive to do anything to help them.

It is interesting that progressives, for the most part, stick with Democrats, because Democrats are the Conservative Party. Anyone who believes differently is deluded, and /or repulsed by the marginal influence progressives have in the Democratic Party. As a left of center voter, who often feels the Dems have shifted too far right, I may not immediately agree with the cutting edge of progressivism, but, truth be told, I usually come to see the value in the ideas they bring to the table. Still, I believe the debt needs to be brought to heel, that the rule of law must be honored, that legal precedents are the building blocks of our future, and that, while the USA needs a strong national defense, we have that, many times over.

Folks who want to gut the social safety net are raging radical psychopaths. And folks who follow turnip are fascist traitors to the Constitution, and they are the immediate threat. Yes, there will be blood. Radical psychopathy seeks blood. We bear witness to the blood they are willing to shed right now. Do you think allowing starvation and unchecked disease is bloodless?

Tax the obscenely wealthy, for the sake of our future, and this country’s stated values. Tax them exorbitantly, and tax their wealth, not just their income. Because that is the conservative thing to do. Get a fucking handle on defense spending. The debt will be brought under control.

I think if people would acknowledge that welfare is a cornerstone of capitalism, we could get the country in a better direction. That social safety net is required to help those who earn lower wages survive and keep our economy going. The system doesn't work if everyone is a doctor.

More proof that the wealthier and more successful you are, the dumber and more arrogant you become.    There are exceptions like Gates/Buffet, but many of these guys are kind of stupid.  (Sure I recognize the complexity of the word stupid, if I wanted to talk credit default swaps, Dimon/Ackman would probably be excellent resources, but their ability to step out of their lane and well beyond their sphere of knowledge is rather arrogant/dumb).

They're grasping for spin control. They know this is the most egregious example of corruption, theft, and authoritarian bullshit that has happened in the US in over 100 years, if ever. They know they're destroying the US economy to feed themselves. These are the attempts to gaslight the country and make believe it all isn't happening. They're this abrasive and bold because they know Americans are stupid.

The young vote shouldn't have ever been positive.  Forgive loans and try to ensure affordable education while limiting predatory loans, and maybe they'll show up or not, depending on Joe Rogan.  That's my knee jerk reaction.  Many people didn't show up that benefited from a Democrat administration, and they couldn't be bothered.  I'll never understand apathy.  Apathy is taking a system for granted that a lot of people shed blood and lives for, relying on somebody else to make sure everything works.  Apathy is the absolute worst entitlement.

Apparently my cohort sucks.  I’m squarely in the middle of GenX at 52.  This actually checks out pretty well.
