March 5Mar 5 On 2/28/2025 at 9:44 AM, Ghost of NMAS said: The whole case has brought up something that has been bothering me lately. What do people with dogs do about them when they commit suicide? Do they take their dog with them, just leave it to fend for itself, or do people with dogs just not commit suicide? You almost never read about the dogs in news stories about suicides. One of the things that has really been bothering me lately is what would happen to my dog Sebastian if I were to die, so it’s hard for me to image just leaving him alone, but I sure can’t imagine killing him. I did some intertron research and there’s not much out there about this subject. I did find one science journal article that suggested that it was more common than reported for suicide victims (is victim the correct term?) to take their pets with them, but that news reports just seldom mentioned it. These things keep me up at night. My mother's neighbor was a terminally ill veterinarian who took his dogs with him when he decided to go. On the other hand, I know a girl who went through major depression who told me the only reason that she didn't kill herself is because she was worried about her dog. I'd say I'm closer to the latter, as I can't imagine taking a pet with me unless they were also sick.
March 5Mar 5 We adopted a couple of senior cats. It's been a great experience for both of us. One of them was really traumatized; she spent the first two weeks in the closet, she it really took a couple of years for her to come out of her shell. Now we've got this new kitten in the house, and after a little adjustment period, she and the little guy have become friends. And she went from a scrawny, anxious to the point of grooming herself bald thing to a big fat happy furball. (By far the dumbest cat I've ever seen, tho. Oh well.) The other cat was basically my son's therapy cat through high school. So she's justified her existence quite a bit. So no, I wouldn't take my pets with me; there's always someone else's life they could become a part of, just like these two old ladies have done for us. Edited March 5Mar 5 by Rimbo
March 6Mar 6 here's what Dr. Baden thinks: Gene went Fred Sanford and hit the deck. Wife panics, runs to get medicine, slips and hits her head and has a brain bleed and never wakes up.
March 6Mar 6 ...And then the dog tries to wake them but licks go astray and tongue hits a power outlet.

She didn't go down a bottle of pills, leave many all over the cabinet and then stand in the same spot for 2 hours waiting for the pills to kill her without letting the dog out of the kennel. Anyone thinking she committed suicide is stupid.

March 7Mar 7 I wonder who will play Hackman in the movie about this. Such a great actor with such range. I'm so glad Wes Anderson cast him in Tannenbaums. RIP
March 7Mar 7 The Conversation was a very slow burn but I’m glad I watched it. Almost felt like Kubrick instead of Coppola. Some big supporting cast members. Mississippi Burning is still great. I certainly didn’t appreciate it when I was assigned to go watch it in high school. We called it Mississippi Boring. Watching Crimson Tide now, and it has the Bruckheimer cheese but it’s fun to watch Denzel and Hackman spar.

March 7Mar 7 Supposed to be a press conference with updates at some point this afternoon. https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/national-international/gene-hackman-death-investigation-latest/3786571/
March 7Mar 7 Quote Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said officials believe that Betsy Arakawa’s last known communication was on February 11. Arakawa’s husband, Gene Hackman, was also found dead in another room in the house. Hackman’s pacemaker showed his “last event” was recorded on February 17, Mendoza said previously. “According to the pathologist, I think that is a very good assumption, that that was his last day of life,” he said. Mendoza said Arakawa used a fob to gain access to the gated community where they lived at about 5:15 p.m. on February 11. “Numerous emails were unopened on her computer on February 11. There was no additional outgoing communication from her or known activity after February 11, 2025,” Mendoza said. that timeline definitely messes with a lot of theories. Hackman could possibly have been alive for 6 days after his wife possibly died? (yes, lots of possibly's)
March 7Mar 7 I doubt she was dead for 6 days with him alive. Best guess she started feeling real shitty around the 11th, collapsed and died in the bathroom on the 17th, Hackman found her and the shock/grief killed him due to his age and infirmity. He was in the other room, one would hope to get to a phone to call authorities.

Supposedly it takes 3 weeks to start mummification?
March 7Mar 7 Hanta virus for her. Heart failure for him. Advanced Alzheimer’s for him also. Edited March 7Mar 7 by Shaddie
March 7Mar 7 and yep she was dead 6 days, but he didn't realize b/c Alzheimer's. Also obv didn't realize dog was kenneled. Man God was sure on fire when he decided to include Alzheimer's in the ole grand design.
March 7Mar 7 not going to go back and read the whole thread, but I assume no one had theorized it had been 'death by rat'.
March 8Mar 8 Crazy that none of their family and friends heard from them for that long and nobody called the police or went to check on them.
March 8Mar 8 Interesting that Hackman doesn't have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Sheds some light: https://ktla.com/entertainment/gene-hackman-walk-of-fame/

He didn't find her...she was his caregiver.

March 8Mar 8 My guess (which is worth zip) is he probably was so far gone he couldn’t be around anyone he didn’t know and maybe that is why she didn’t hire help or she didn’t want his story out so paparazzi weren’t being vultures. Only reason I could think she didn’t get medical help for herself.

Was he so bad off to where he couldn't use a phone? “Advanced Alzheimer’s” sounds pretty bad off. If you’re living in the same house as your wife who’s been dead for almost a week and can’t grasp that, I’m thinking that dialing a phone to a working number and communicating a coherent message to the person on the other end of the line is probably an awful lot to ask.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but yeah, advanced Alzeheimers probably means that. He could probably "use" one, but he never "knew" he needed to. And if you have lived with it, experienced it, it's pretty easy to understand that scenario. Edited March 8Mar 8 by Chico_SA

March 8Mar 8 Gene Hackman died of heart disease, his wife died of hantavirus, authorities say | AP News Well that's a sad fucking story.
March 8Mar 8 It's certainly a sad story, but more for her than him. And the dog. He likely wouldn't have lasted another month. Sometimes bizarre things happen and this is just one instance. What are the odds she catches a rare disease and dies right before he would have died? I'm not buying the he found her dead and then died from grief story at all. He probably never knew she was dead. He died days after her and not next to her. And what's the deal with the daughter who says she was close to her dad. She has a different definition of close than I do.
March 8Mar 8 I would like to believe I have quite a few people in my life who would show up at my door if I didn't answer calls/texts for more than about 48 hours. Especially at that age. Edit: Meaning more her than him. But yeah if you have a 95 year old parent, may want to check in every few weeks or so. Edited March 8Mar 8 by Red Five

March 10Mar 10 The USA Today article was a tough read. Sounds like Gene was alive for a week after his wife died of hantavirus. The dog starved inside of the crate. For everybody that says they never want to be in a retirement home, this is the other side of the coin. Hantavirus is no joke. We should all get our houses checked for rodents.
March 10Mar 10 It's hard to imagine 3 middle aged kids not checking in on their 95 year old dad with Alzheimer's for over a week. What a sad story.
