March 7Mar 7 I was raised on 1960s and 1970s R&B, constantly playing in my parents' car. Lots of great stuff on this thread. Props for Inner City Blues by Marvin. Such a haunting intro from one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. The Four Tops still fuck. And speaking of Marvin, Trouble Man is brilliant.

March 8Mar 8 Back on the other site (or one of them) we had a similar thread. I created a playlist of all the offerings then, and have added the ones here as well. SPOTIFY: SurlySoul

April 1Apr 1 Great thread. Thanks, @elguapo. Grew up on military bases around the U.S. and in Germany, where virtually every one of these songs was a staple on the radio and especially on the jukeboxes of the base snack bars. My first real job was at a snack bar, where a coworker, an older Korean woman, would use her daily breaks by pulling up next to the jukebox, lighting a cigarette, and puffing away while staring into the distance and listening to this song, practically spitting out a derisive "huh" two or three times with every play. Especially during the opening spoken portion. Day after day, week after week, for an entire summer I watched this routine. Not sure I've seen that level of fixation on a song since. April 30Apr 30 Another apropos documentary is Summer of Soul about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. I think it's streaming on Hulu.
