Would RT keep his job if this happened 45 members have voted

  1. 1. Would RT keep his job if this happened

    • Yes, you can’t fire a coach with his tourney record
    • No, CDC would still replace him

real simple: Tre Johnson goes bananas in the conference tourney, then puts the team on his back and leads Texas to the Elite 8 averaging 25+ throughout the postseason. Does Rodney Terry keep his job if this happens?

I dont even want to vote bc I don’t know. Has a team ever fired a coach the same year he made the second weekend?

it would take some maneuvering, but he doesn’t have to be fired. CDC could potentially find him a soft landing spot, we can make up some BS reason for RT taking that other job, and then replace him without actually firing him.

There should already have been something done to guarantee this doesn't happen.....fire him after the SC loss.

Then this isn't even an option.

He absolutely would, but it'd be a Kevin Keatts situation. It's uncomfortable, but this is why the "ideal" is a Woodson/Hamilton situation where you announce Terry is done after the season but he finishes the year out so you can't have Haith steal the job with a miracle run.

Ugh yeah. It would be like a “he’s so done next year,” and we suffer through a 13-18 season and he’s fired a  year later than he should be

Texas couldn't beat a crappy OU team at home to save their season. I doubt they make a SEC tourney run or even win a game, frankly.

I can only imagine what his roster for next year would look like if he was retained for any reason, including a conf tourney championship and e8 run.

Let's just win the whole god damned thing!

apparently i give CDC more credit than many of y’all do. again, we’re talking about case where it’s blatantly clear that the only reason we are winning games is because of our 19 year old lottery pick who is going full chris jackson on the competition. absolutely nobody thinks that this is a good or well coached team, even as we continue to win games. if you think CDC can’t still choose to move on from RT in that situation then that tells me that you don’t think very highly of CDC or his ability to do his job.

Didn't Keatts have something in his contract where his tourny run last year automatically extended it?

Because it’s not a thing.

we kicked shaka out the door without firing him, so it’s not only a thing, it’s a thing that we’ve already done. the two situations aren’t 100% analogous, but it’s possible to let RT go without leaving him out on his ass. is it likely? no. is it possible? yes.

Why is it the case we called Marquette and told them to hire Shaka? More like we encouraged Shaka to look around to avoid a firing.

No, we told Shaka “find another job or be fired” so he found another job. Texas absolutely did not pay/ask/beg Marquette to take him.

We have not found another job for a coach we want to get rid of. That is not a thing.

Moreover, why isn’t the fairytale that Texas finds jobs for coaches they don’t want because they don’t want to look mean applied to Aston or Herman?

  • Author

i don’t know anything about karen aston, but tom herman is a huge prick who embarrassed the university both on the field and off, so that’s a pretty easy one.

and again, i’ve said from the beginning that it’s unlikely, but your idea that there’s just a zero percent chance that CDC could sit down with RT, explain to him that we’re moving on, and then see if he can help RT find a new gig makes zero sense to me. seems like would pretty much be SOP, and far from “fantasy land”.

Edited by Derka

He'd get another year for sure

Unless they already told him behind closed doors that he needs to find another job.

There is literally no precedent for firing a coach that has even made the Sweet 16 as far as I've been able to search. I promise you can hold yourself together for a few more days until we're officially dead without crashing out.

Why would CDC do that when RT has an agent? That’s the agents job.

Now, would CDC tell RT he’ll give him the best reference ever? Of course but that’s not “helping him find a landing spot” not at all.

Lulz. He would absolutely keep his job. But Tre could average 40+ pts per game for the remainder of his career in a texas uni, and we still wont win 7 games in a row. You're talking about a team that is 3-8 since our last 2 game winning streak.  There's a greater chance of Alexandra Daddario murdering Sydney Sweeney in a jealous rage after our 72 hr menage-a-fuckfest next weekend. This team is fucking terrible.

He 100 percent would be the coach. He wouldn’t deserve it, but he’d still have the job.

ok so in the conference tourney we beat vandy; then we beat a&m, because they suck and we’ve already done it once; then we beat tennessee because BaRNeS iN mArCh; then we beat ole miss who upset 1 seed auburn; then ok, we lose to florida in the final, but we’re in the tourney as an 11 seed.

round one we play 6 seed marquette, beat them by 30, obviously; round two we play 14 seed lipscomb who beat 3 seed a&m; S16 we beat 10 seed utah state, who beat 15 seeded bryant, who upset 2 seed wisconsin in the opening round. voila, we’re in the elite 8! are you REALLY gonna sit here and tell me that this can’t happen?!? you sure about that? you sure about that?!?!

Save your energy for the rebranded coaching search thread coming later this week, most likely.

It's more or less why we ended up stuck with him in the first place. So the answer is, sadly, yes.

Won't happen, though.

What is the outcome of going bananas? Is it win the SEC tournament or just play well enough to get into the dance?

You're not firing a coach that wins the conference tournament and goess to the elite 8 for the 2nd time in 3 seasons.

Many say regular season games (and titles) don't matter, so if RT delivers when it matters, what is the reason to fire him?

No you’re not joking. You’re projecting your worst fear.   Just let it play out.  Don’t waste energy on it.

You might as well worry about what to do with your Powerball jackpot winnings

Equal or better odds of hitting the Powerball than the scenario you describe happening

Yep. Rolling over to Vandy and losing by double digits seems like the likeliest outcome for this squad

By writing this response, I’ve already given this hypothetical more time than it deserves.giphy.gif

Given the international climate, many Latin workers are staying home.  Caucasian Steve will be making your tacos.  Same pronunciation

It would save his job in my opinion, at least for a year, but seems quite unlikely and not a real thing to worry about

Hasn't Haith stolen enough from Texas already?

What if Terry was named the new President of Texas by the Board of Regents.

This would save a buyout and give him a soft landing.

However, what if Terry used his new position to somehow save his job as basketball coach?

I think there should be poll on this.

Think hard and choose wisely.

Rodney Terry has won 4 NCAA Tournament games since taking over in 2022.

From 2009-2022, Texas won 4 NCAA Tournament games.  Total.

But the noise around RT's possible departure continues to get louder.  Here are some thoughts as to why..
