Projections are Kingston will be right to the east of it. Full winds.

Also- If it wobbles W or E will have a major impact. But the whole island is fucked.

if I recall, the massive deforestation of the island means they will have a shit ton of mudslides - and communities will be cut off from each other and from aid workers

Jamaica or Haiti? Yeah, Haiti is fucked with no matter what. A grasshopper could spit and it causes a mudslide.

Aid worker? Where? We (the US) were the lead for this region. Um.... Well you know.

Looking a little bit better for Kingston (metro pop: 1.2 million) and the rest of the eastern third of the island. I imagine they'll still see tons of coastal flooding, mudslides, and the attendant damage, but let's hope they're spared the worst of the winds. Of course, that's no consolation for the poor folks 50 miles to the west.

That seems like it's moving slowly. That won't be good for rainfall totals.

Forecast is 40 inches of rain, Cat 4-5 winds, and a 8 foot storm surge.

Good lord!

I went to Negril probably 7 or 8 times in my 20's and early 30's.  Doesn't seem like area ever fully recovered post-covid from what I've read (more crime, etc.) and this certainly won't help, but at least it doesn't look like the Western side will take the worst of it.  Never been down to the south coast area where this will hit and it's not nearly as developed, but what is there about to get wiped out.    Lots of good people there.  Hate it for them.

Welp.  Goodbye Jamaica I guess.

I would go with this.

Just heard that one of the hurricane-hunting aircraft had to turn around due to extreme turbulence.

A Cat 3 five miles to the west of Santiago de Cuba doesn't sound good either.

The 175 mph winds might do a little damage too

Hide behind a blue shed. Other than that it will buff out.

This thing is not moving. Just microwaving there

893 on the first pass, and the plane didn't get a good eye penetration.

Hello history.

This bitch may be at 880s before she is done.

Is there a lot of people on that side of the island?

It seems like it's hitting in as good of place as it can from a development and population standpoint from what I know about the island.  Obviously what is there is going to get wiped out and the east coast and Kingston going to get hit with storm surge on the dirty side of it.

No longer unofficial. Kermit confirms and NHC has officially said 892 and 185. Ties the strongest ever in both categories.

This was (soon to be) #2 to make landfall: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1935_Labor_Day_hurricane

Apparently was moving 30 mph then slowed to 10 mph.  This one?  Walking speed.

id imagine some pants shitting as well.  holy fuck.

I'm sure this camera won't be around long.

Reading that made me go see if there'd been any planes lost to structural failure due to hurricane missions. There definitely have beeen some but it's been a while. Some recent near misses.

I never made it to Floyd's Pelican bar during my Jamaica trips. It's a bar constructed out on a sand bar you had to take a boat out to south of Negril and close to where the eye is passing now.  Had actually planned to finally visit on my 40th b-day when Covid hit and never made it back to Jamaica.  Safe to say that place, along with damn near everything south of White house to Treaseure Bay area around the coast line now ceases to exist.   I'm glad for Negril that it didn't move about 30 miles further west before the North turn as they are missing the worst of it, but horrible.

What's crazy to me is how small airplanes will just break apart in a severe thunderstorm. Larger planes are much more stable in flight with but there's definitely a part of these guys Leeroy Jenkinsing it.
