I hope we are able to jump ahead and get a little breathing room early against Xavier.
This could be a real fight. I heard recently Xavier can pose a real threat and restrict your ability to breathe.

Yeah, there's a multiverse where Chris Beard used his fucking brain and left the house before he laid hands on Randi and we made the Final Four and possibly won it all in 2023 and he's still fucking coaching here.

Of course, there's also a multiverse where Shaka beat ACU and is still coaching here.

There's a multiverse where the janitor brought the boxes Naismith asked for instead of peach baskets and everyone is playing boxball.

Off the top of my head his last movie, "The Shootist," "The Sands of Iwa Jima," "The Alamo," "The Searchers," "Stagecoach, "The Cowboys," and "The Sons of Katie Elder."

That's all I can think of.

The Duke's character didn't die in "Katie Elder," "The Searchers," or "Stagecoach."  He did die in several other films, though, including the other four you mentioned.

I certainly won't be surprised if X takes us down.  The game is essentially a home game for Xavier.  Xavier is playing very well entering the tourney, and they're very experienced, which usually helps in the tourney.  Xavier is a slight favorite for a reason.  In order for Texas to win (and possibly go on a bit of a tourney run), Johnson's shooting needs to catch fire again and someone else on the roster (Mark, Pope or Kaluma) needs to join him in going on a tear.  Flame away.

Freemantle is going to be a load for Shedrick and Onyema to handle.

John Wayne’s Filmography: The Complete List of Films Where He Died

THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER (1965) – John Wayne’s character, John Elder, valiantly faces his death in a dramatic and memorable confrontation, symbolizing the end of an era and leaving a lasting impact on the storyline

Does John Wayne play for Xavier? I don’t get it

"Facing" one's death is not the same as actually dying.  You need to watch the movie.  But I'll save you the time.  Start watching the linked Youtube video (which shows the end of the movie) at about 6:07.  You'll see John Wayne's character is in the final scene, alive and well.

I think he's a non-scholly walk-on.  About 6'4" (6'8" or 6'9" with the cowboy hat), and 230#-plus.  Tough to move in the paint once he establishes position.  Very tenacious -- plays with true grit.  He's inclined to punch or even shoot people who insult him or act rudely toward women, so opposing players often are unwilling to challenge him.  Very patriotic -- always stands at attention during the National Anthem.

This coming after he played football at the University of Southern California incognito as Marion Morrison on scholarship, where he had some injuries, but never died.

Wayne is like Elvis, his presumed death could be premature, he's 117 years old and living large.

Then we attack him early and often. Try and get that ass in foul trouble.

During UCLA’s incredible Final Four run in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, they started in the First Four as an 11-seed and won five games before falling in the national semifinals. Here are the teams they defeated:

1. First Four:

• Defeated Michigan State (11-seed) | Score: 86-80 (OT)

2. Round of 64 (First Round):

• Defeated BYU (6-seed) | Score: 73-62

3. Round of 32 (Second Round):

• Defeated Abilene Christian (14-seed) | Score: 67-47

4. Sweet 16:

• Defeated Alabama (2-seed) | Score: 88-78 (OT)

5. Elite Eight:

• Defeated Michigan (1-seed) | Score: 51-49

6. Final Four:

• Lost to Gonzaga (1-seed) | Score: 93-90 (OT) [Jalen Suggs’ half-court buzzer-beater]

UCLA became just the second team ever to go from the First Four to the Final Four, joining VCU in 2011. Their run was one of the most memorable in recent NCAA Tournament history.

WHY NOT US ??

Also, lol Abilene Christian.

shaka’s final four run came as a play-in team in the inaugural season of the dumbass expansion from 64 to 68.

And Shaka Smart was directly responsible for both of them.

With no desire to continue the derail, I've worked in Hollywood and as a film historian.  You have no idea what you're talking about.  Stop.

I could care less about John Wayne's demise in movies or Molly Miller's hair, and I googled that about Katie Elder, you can deal with them. You think I just made it up. I care about Rodney Terry's continued tenure as a basketball coach. I didn't start any of this. This all started because of a post by others about a mediocre tv show from the 1970's called Kung Fu with a side of John Wayne thrown in.

So, you can back off now, Mr. DeMille.

This gonna be one of them games where we down by 20 with like 6 to play in the first half

those big 10 teams are all sketchy to me, but particularly michigan and illinois. in filling out my various practice brackets i had one where michigan is in my FF and one where they lost to UCSD. Illinois could lost to us or they could go to the E8. even wisconsin and sparty aren’t teams in super solid on. tough league to call.

At least I’m not saddled with the burden of expectations. There is only gravy or the end of RT’s tenure.

Smarter basketball folks - what's the biggest thing we should be "concerned" about going into this game?

I know that our weak three-point defense vs Xavier's above average(?) three-point offense will be an issue if they get hot from the outside.

you said it. they shoot the three really well, and not only does this Texas team suck at defending the perimeter, it’s actually a hallmark of rodney terry teams. i’ve posted this a couple of times before so apologies if you’ve already heard this, but when you look at RT’s history as a HC his teams really only have two hallmarks, one good, and one bad: his teams don’t turn the ball over, and they do not defend the three point line. we’ve seen this all year with countless wide open shooters getting countless looks at our basket every game.

if xavier takes advantage of this they will beat us. if they don’t, we have more talent than they do, and we have more scorers than they do, and any combination of Tre-Kaluma-Pope-Mark scoring points + chendall weaver’s return to making to the team/return to making winning plays, and yeah, we can definitely beat both xavier and illinois.

Without reading the rest of the thread…we don’t really defend anybody, especially on the perimeter.

I have no doubt that we are going to make a statement tomorrow like UNC did. RT will have his team ready.
