October 20Oct 20 Author Quote Albert Pujols is no longer a candidate to be the manager of the Los Angeles Angels, sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday. Pujols, though, is scheduled to interview for the San Diego Padres' managerial vacancy on Wednesday, a source told ESPN. The Baltimore Orioles have also previously reached out with interest, though an interview has not been scheduled, a source said. The Padres became one of eight teams in search of a new manager after Mike Shildt announced he would retire from his role, joining the Angels, Orioles, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins. Pujols, 45, is held in high regard by the Padres' two most influential players -- Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. Pujols is currently a special assistant for the Angels, as part of a 10-year, $10 million contract that was triggered after he retired in 2022. He interviewed with Angels general manager Perry Minasian in St. Louis on Oct. 9, but the two sides are no longer in talks, which was first reported by the New York Post.
October 22Oct 22 Trout seems kinda weird https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46674319/trout-testifies-was-alerted-kay-possible-drug-abuse Quote Trout testified that he was unaware of players taking illicit drugs or purchasing them from Kay, but he "may have heard" that when a player wanted Viagra, Kay would go to a doctor to handle that. Trout said that when he became aware that Kay might be using drugs, he limited Kay's ability to get autographs from Trout to make sure Kay wasn't "misusing them" -- that is, selling autographed material and using the money to buy drugs. "I made sure when he brought them [autographed items] down, I knew who they were going to," Trout said. Before confronting Kay, Trout said he dared the communications employee to do multiple acts deemed as "horseplay" for varying amounts of money, including taking a 90 mph fastball to the body, eating a bug off the clubhouse floor and another crude act. Trout's descriptions pointed to the desperate extremes Kay was willing to go for money

October 22Oct 22 Quote Given the Rockies’ track record — seven consecutive losing seasons and just five playoff appearances in 33 years — and the challenges and vagaries of playing baseball at a mile above sea level, the job of rebuilding the franchise might seem undesirable for many. Spilborghs, however, believes that leading the offices at 20th and Blake is a highly coveted job. “I have talked to virtually every organization for the past couple of years,” Spilborghs said. “A lot of executives have asked me about the Rockies. They ask me what’s going on. Then I ask them, in turn, what they think of the situation. I cannot tell you how many of them have told me, ‘That’s my dream job.’ ”

October 23Oct 23 Quote A few hours after news of the Orange and Black hiring the former Tennessee baseball coach broke the internet, The San Francisco Standard’s John Shea shared Vitello’s contract details, citing sources, in an article published Wednesday. “[Vitello] will earn $3.5 million annually on a three-year contract that includes a vesting option for a fourth season, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations,” Shea wrote. Last year, Vitello signed the largest contract in college baseball history with Tennessee, which gave him $3.3 million per season through 2029. Vitello now is slated to make more than that in San Francisco. The Giants also have around $4 million remaining to pay former manager Bob Melvin, whom president of baseball operations Buster Posey fired in late September after exercising Melvin's 2026 option over the summer. San Francisco technically will be paying over $7 million to fill their manager position during the 2025 MLB season. Pretty minimal increase in salary if true, but it would presumably put him in the top half of managers ranked by pay.

November 3Nov 3 Oh Christ, maybe I should apply for the job: Quote The Rockies’ search for a new front-office boss from outside the organization has hit a detour. The two leading candidates are no longer in the running for the job, according to a report from The Athletic. Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye and Cleveland Guardians assistant GM Matt Forman were reportedly finalists to become the head of Rockies baseball operations. Now, neither is being considered, The Athletic reported Monday. Sawdaye interviewed for the job last Monday, according to a league source, and Forman interviewed at the Rockies’ offices at 20th and Blake on Oct. 24. The Rockies had hoped to announce their new hire this week, but now it’s unclear when they will find their new head of baseball operations. The clock is ticking because MLB’s general managers meetings start next week in Las Vegas. It’s also unclear if the Rockies have other finalists in mind or how many candidates had a preliminary interview for the job. Executive vice president Walker Monfort, the son of owner Dick Monfort, is leading the Rockies’ search. Dick Monfort has also been involved in the interviews. The Rockies, who promoted their last two GMs (Jeff Bridich and Schmidt) from within the organization, have said they would search for candidates from outside the organization. “We are setting our sights on finding the right leader from outside our organization who can bring a fresh perspective to the Rockies and enhance our baseball operations with a new vision, innovation, and a focus on both short and long-term success,” Walker Monfort said last month. “This change delivers an opportunity to shape the future of our club and move forward into a new era of Rockies baseball.” They're going to end up hiring the other Montfort kid, aren't they @MrX?
