And that’s a first. Which for a man my age, is kind of extraordinary.  Those of you who served in combat have undoubtedly seen it many times.  I haven’t.

Driving home along 360.  Some guy decided it would be a good idea to cross the highway. It wasn’t. Car ahead of me hits him.

Anytime a shoe flies off, it’s bad. This was no different. I suggest someone check his pulse. He doesn’t have one.  Someone has the presence of mind to start chest compressions.  That actually works, from the standpoint that it started the blood flowing as evidenced by the growing pool of blood from the back of his head.

I didn’t do shit to help. You think you’d be a superhero in that situation. I certainly wasn’t. I stood there fairly slack-jawed.

Then I went to Maudie’s and had a couple margaritas.

I’m not feeling particularly great right now.

Look—I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t have the thought. But the guy was probably homeless. So really—what’re his damages?

Driving my daughter to school a couple of years ago and we both clocked a body on the side of the highway at the same time. Not great Bob…

Oh, and it was right out front of Ted Lorenz’s office. And it’d be unseemly to steal work from him like that.

Saw a couple growing up, but man when I saw a dude get run over on Buckner maybe 10 years ago in pleasant grove it was bad. All he had was his undershirt on after, shoes and even baggy pants went flying. Think her stole something on the DART but it was bad. Last one for me was last year in San Diego and saw a guy get run over by gas lamp but he didn’t die.

Growing up, military, or a random date night in San Diego it never feels good to see that shit

Was in a quiet hospital lobby one weekday morning before 'Rona fucked everything, heard a loud bang, thought a bird smoked one of the big windows. Bunch of nurses started running, yelling 'GSW!'. Well, I'd seen enough First 48 to know what that shit meant. At least he did it somewhere where they were well-equipped to clean it up.

Damn, that’s fucked up. Sorry you had to witness. I experienced a similar situation years ago - motorcycle tire blow out.  It’s something you won’t ever forget. Sounds like there was nothing you could have down.  Perhaps if you’re ever unlucky enough to find yourself in a similar situation, you’ll be more prepared to react and render aid.

Next thing you know, you’ll be heading to Reno to shoot a guy just to watch him die.

But then I’d end up in Folsom Prison.

ah yes the old imma cross the highway now move. seen a few near misses but never a hit. sorry to hear man.

cool story alert. once on 35 norf of San Marcos I once saw a very, very large dog, who I assume was rabid or on coke, charge down 35 north heading south into traffic. Dude wasn't having it. one car went completely over him and spit him out the other side. got up in a sec and challenged the next truck. By that time I was passed him (or her, no racist) on the left lane. Never seen anything like that. Thought at one point it was for sure zombies.

Doesn't sound like you could have done anything. The fact that you pulled over means that you at least had the intention of being helpful if needed.

A lot of homeless people or people down on their luck in general I guess kill themselves this way which is extremely fucked up. Dude probably didn't have much left to live for.

I'd consider yourself blessed that you weren't the car that hit him.

He had been holding out for a management position.

Jesus Christ—I just saw on the news that the dude was on a motorcycle. Fuck. I thought he was moving fast, and there was a lot of debris. But it never occurred to me that was was on a motorcycle.

Fuck.

Similar thing happened to me when I was 13 or so, in the car with my dad and a white delivery truck ran over a guy on I-35 southbound at Capital Plaza (near 51st). Difference was he was already gone, and no one seemed to give a fuck as he was just run over multiple times over.  I can still see it in my mind like it just happened.

Well, I guess you win. That’s far more horrific.

First time for me was when a buddy of mine and I were driving to San Marcos. Was a jumper off the top level of I-35 near UT campus, I think right around the 32nd street intersection. You never forget some shit like that. He landed about 15 yards away almost on top of another car, was very early and traffic was pretty sparse.

Sorry you had to see that. I’ve been unfortunate enough three times. First was a girl in the back of an el Camino who was a couple cars in front of us and decided to jump out while traveling on I-35. Brutal. Pulled over and it was just body parts in road.

Second was a family of four hit by a car at an intersection as we were driving up to. All deceased. Unreal.

Last time was a motorcycle who had a minor accident on Mopac. Unfortunately the guy didn’t have a helmet on and looked like it was instant,

Wish we could avoid it…but you can’t when it happens right in front of you.

Seems similar and yours happened just now. I’m just laying on the couch watching a baseball game, your head is fucked up all to hell right now.

I know—imagine what being tied into the 11th agains UTSA will do to a man.

Having second thoughts on not leaving a business card then?

I can't think of too much worse than seeing someone intentionally taking their life in this way.  Maybe a hanging.

I watched both of my parents die before my eyes in the hospital at separate times.  In both cases I had travelled across the country to be with them and in both cases they passed away later on the very same day I arrived in town.  It's a bit creepy, but I did get to say goodbye to both of them, which is something.

Saw a guy jump off a parking garage in downtown Houston after his attempt to drive his car through the railing failed. It was surreal seeing him fall like a rag doll.

Back in 1995 I was going North on 281 in downtown San Antonio almost to the I-10 West exit, but not in the exit lane.  At that point on the freeway, it's elevated because there are surface streets that cross underneath it.  I notice someone coming up on me way faster than what was safe in my rearview mirror and he jerks into the exit lane right before he's about to hit me.  My guess is that he was either trying to pass me or changed his mind about exiting because he tried zipping back into my lane in front of me.  He misjudged his speed and cashed into the retaining wall right at the "V" that divides the exit and other lanes, and popping right over the edge and down to the street below.  There was no way that I could stop or go back to render aid.  The next day I saw news footage of the wreck and his car looked like a crushed beer can.

I also saw a small plane crash into a field outside of the SA airport and the pilot died in that one too.

Near identical scenario to GoLL. Watched a guy try to cross I-30 in West Dallas. 8 lanes. He ran across 6 and flew across the last 2.

Did you at least form his fingers into a Horns Up? Seems like the right thing to do.

You were supposed to take out your phone and take some pics and/or video.

Fuck.

Only thing my dad (orthopedic surgeon) said I could never buy with my own money growing up was a motorcycle.

And when one of my brothers brought it up he took him to the ER on a random day to show him the inevitable guy in there torn up after crashing one.

That's awful.  I saw the story on KXAN, but as you later commented they reported that the guy was on a motorcycle.  Did he try to cross the highway or was he hit from behind?

I hope the margs helped.

@Ghost of LL, that's a shitty way to end the day, and I'm sorry you had to witness that.  I've never seen a person die up close, not even a relatively calm passing in a hospital bed.  But I'm quite certain I would react exactly as you did in that situation, from the helplessness to grabbing drinks afterwards.

Only remotely comparable situation was I saw a plane crash as a kid, maybe in eighth or ninth grade.  I was with my parents at church in Quantico, Virginia, and in the middle of service a small plane nose dives in an open field next to the church.  The Catholic priest runs out to the crash while most of the congregation remains in the church.  Several minutes later after first responders arrived on the scene, the priest comes back into the church with tears in his eyes, having administered last rites to the two passengers in the plane.

I went to law school in Houston.  There was this 13th floor cafeteria nearby that was convenient during the day.  During my 1L year, I grabbed some lunch up there one day and was sitting by the window.  I looked out at downtown Houston and saw a body that quite literally just had kersplatted on a concrete awning of a nearby building.  I didn't see the guy jump, but probably would have had I looked out a few seconds sooner.  I don't care to ever see a jumper post-mortem again.

As part of my job, I unfortunately have to look at all sorts of gruesome, crime scene photos, including murder victims and car accident victims.  I'm able to compartmentalize it, but that shit sticks with you nonetheless.

TLDR.  I've seen some shit.

No young boys on the plane?

Seen it. Won’t forget it. Murder with a handgun and horrible accident with ejection. Every time I drive by I think of that lady. In my line of work I’ve seen many homicides or fatal MVAs occur or after the facts on cell phone, security, body cams and crime scene photos. Doesn’t make it any easier to see people expire.

On the other hand I have a friend at the highest levels of law enforcement and he is completely unfazed even for something as gruesome as the classroom at Uvalde.

I briefly thought I might want a career in criminal law when I started law school.  I interned at the Travis County DA's office the summer after my 1L year, and saw enough to say nope.  I don't know how some of you do it for a living.

To be fair, AG Paxton has a lazy eye.  Probably hard for him to focus.

He’s not unfazed, he’s just good at hiding it….for now.

First time for me was when I was 4 years old.  Dude was running through my neighborhood and a car was chasing him.  Our street was a cul-de-sac dead end, and we were the last house.  Dude ran onto our driveway (this is around 9PM) and we hear 2 gunshots and a car screaming away.  Me and Dad go outside to find running man on our driveway with one in the chest and one previously in the forehead...I say previously because the back of his head and his brains were all over the place.  Dad was like "ehhh, let's go back inside son"

Saw a woman on a motorcycle on RR12 fly over the handle bars with no helmet. Did not end well.

I went straight to the liquor store after that.

I mean, I was on my way there when I saw it but my budget was ignored after that.

You're not kidding.  I have a cousin that's ex-LEO and the stuff he's told me is absolutely fucking wild.  He has nightmares all the time from PTSD and this guy is the toughest/meanest son of a bitch that I know.

I can work in the moment just fine. I’ve worked with people that lost their shit in the middle of the scene. That’s unprofessional and irresponsible. We get paid to keep our shit together when everyone else is losing theirs. It’s after the adrenaline wears off and you’re left to yourself that it becomes real.

I have visitors from the past all the time. Best way I can explain it is it’s like the ghosts that Tommy Gavin sees in Rescue Me. The one that comes to see me more than the others is the 12 year old girl that hung herself in the garage with an extension cord because mom and mommy’s boyfriend chose her older sister to participate in the 3 way porno they made.

My sister hit a troubled 13-year-old that suddenly ran on the highway after running away from home (the house was right on the highway). Tough thing to be responsible for even when it wasn't your fault and everyone every step of the way says it wasn't your fault.
