Why not? They just turned a Disney+ Moana series into a billion dollar movie and Inside Out 2 also did a billion dollars. Frozen 3 & 4 are in production. Toy Story 5 comes out next year.

At least they're trying something new with Elio though audiences have shown they really don't care for new offerings.

I meant legacy wise it's risky, financially it's a smart move. I'm sure it'll make huge bucks

Even if the sequel sucks, it doesn't change how good the original was. Frozen, Moana, Inside Out, and The Incredibles aren't thought of less because their sequels were disappointing. At least the original team is returning for the sequel.

I thought inside out 2 was great, so maybe Coco 2 will be

Pixar used to be all blockbusters with a ton of anticipation before release. Seems like that has mostly died since covid or Disney plus.

Coco was the last good Pixar movie

Saying this like Inside Out 2 wasn't great.

If you're saying it was the last great original movie, sure.

Same

Coco ruled.  Very little hope for the sequel.  The enshittification process has so thoroughly grabbed all versions of rehashing old IP.  No one can turn down the finance bros’ money, which leads to the finance bros’ application of the soulless formula for remakes.

Finance bros isn't really the issue since Disney doesn't need them. The issue is more Disney isn't seeing any benefit to new ideas and stories since the public rarely supports them now. The last non-sequel animated hit for Disney was Moana. That was 2016. Strange World and Wish did poorly. Raya and Encanto were casualties of Covid and Disney+ coming online. Maybe Encanto cleans up if it came out today instead of 2021. On the PIxar side, It's a similar issue since Coco was the last original hit and that was 2017. Onward had a chance to do well but then Covid killed the box office. Elemental did okay, better than the last original before Onward which was The Good Dinosaur. There's some mediocre content in there for sure and I don't lay all the blame on the public. It's just there's also very little evidence that original content will do well going forward. I guess we'll see how Elio does. After that, it will be a while before we see any new content that's not a sequel, prequel, or offshoot.

Coco is an awesome movie. I can't imagine how you can revisit the story in any interesting way. The entire premise was about life after death through remembrance and Coco dying tied it all up. What's the story at this point?

I love Encanto

It may not be a huge Hot Take but I like Encanto more than Coco.

Coco pulls at the heart strings more at the end of the movie...but Encanto is more fun IMO and the music, not surprising considering who wrote it, is better.

I don't care for the music in Encanto much at all.  The music in Coco is much better and actually sounds like Mexican music. The one complaint about the music in Coco is that the songs are all too short.

Yeah big disagree there...the music in Encanto is more uplifting and impactful(other than Remember Me from Coco of course).  And i don't know how much more latin you can get than a latin guy writing the music and all Latin actors/singers. They all did the voices for in the spanish versions too, lol.

All in all, it's a matter of taste I suppose.

Encanto did fine given what was going on when it came out (plus top-grossing animated film of the year even though it came out late), and it sold a fuckload of toys and other merchandise and had massive streaming numbers, musical tours. My sister is a Disney fanatic and said Encanto stuff is at all the parks. Disney Corp. clearly loves Encanto.

And one of the co-directors of Encanto was made Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation Studios.

But that and Moana are probably it, and those two won't eternally sell merchandise in the stores like Cars does.

Spiderman:Beyond the Spiderverse is talking 2027 and they started working on that right after/during Across the Spiderverse. These things take time.

Coco was such a masterpiece. Will see this for sure.
