Knowing what "Adonis" means, I had to AI the pair... ------------ The basketball prospect twins Darius and Adonis have names with distinct and interesting meanings: * **Darius:** This is a name of Persian origin. It comes from the Old Persian name "Dārayavahuš," which means **"he who holds firm the good"** or **"maintains possessions well."** It's a historically significant name, notably borne by several kings of ancient Persia, including Darius the Great. * **Adonis:** This name has Greek origins, derived from the Phoenician word "adon," meaning **"lord"** or **"master."** In Greek mythology, Adonis was a strikingly handsome young man, the mortal lover of the goddess Aphrodite, and became an archetype of male beauty. So, Darius's name signifies someone who is a guardian of goodness, while Adonis's name connects to ideas of lordship and striking beauty. It's interesting how these distinct meanings are associated with the two brothers. ------------ I asked the AI if the parents were drunk when they named the kids and it AI-chewed me out.

April 16Apr 16 my favorite carnac bit was from an issue of SI from back in like 1995-96: ”High and outside.” ”Describe JR Rider at a picnic.”

April 16Apr 16 now that’s what i’m talking about. guys who’ve come up playing euro ball like this are not only generally much more fundamentally sound with higher basketball iq’s, but they won’t be affected by any college atmosphere they ever face. whether it’s a road game in league play or a final four game in a cavernous football stadium, the atmosphere will be *nothing* compared to what they’ve seen in european pro leagues. i’m always in favor of adding guys with that kind of experience.
April 16Apr 16 Who are some recent euros like this who have been a key piece of an Elite 8 or better team? Just trying to calibrate.
April 16Apr 16 it’s a newer thing because these guys used to be ineligible to play college hoops, so i don’t think there’s a ton of guys in that category yet, but i would imagine that tommy lloyd and mark few may have had a couple of key players with euro experience. i’m pretty sure the ivisic brothers played some euro ball and they were both key players for tourney teams this year. April 16Apr 16 I wonder how universities get around the laws against foreign students having jobs. Are they coming over on some other type of visa other than student visas?

April 16Apr 16 I know I'd be eager to come to the US on a student visa at this point in time. What could go wrong?

April 16Apr 16 Doing a little more research here are some good teams and their international players: Florida Alex Condon (Australia) - 10.6 PTS, 7.5 TRB, 2.2 AST - 3rd Team All-SEC Reuben Chinyelu (Senegal) - 6.0 PTS, 6.6 TRB, 0.7 AST Urban Klavzar (Spain) - 3.2 PTS, 0.6 TRB, 0.8 AST Kajus Kublickas (Lithuania) - 0.7 PTS, 1.2 TRB, 0.3 AST Arizona Henri Veesaar (Spain) - 9.4 PTS, 5.0 TRB, 1.3 AST Anthony Dell'Orso (Australia) - 7.2 PTS, 1.4 TRB, 1.4 AST Motiejus Krivas (Lithuania) - 7.9 PTS, 4.5 TRB, 1.1 AST Conrad Martinez (Spain) - 1.6 PTS, 0.3 TRB, 1.0 AST Duke Tyrese Proctor (Australia) - 12.4 PTS, 3.0 TRB, 2.2 AST - 3rd Team All-SEC Khaman Maluach (Senegal) - 8.6 PTS, 6.6 TRB, 0.5 AST - NCAA All Region Tennessee Igor Milicic (Croatia) - 9.4 PTS, 6.7 TRB, 1.9 AST Felix Okpara (Nigeria) - 7.1 PTS, 6.4 TRB, 0.3 AST Looking back over Miller's teams, I'm not seeing a ton of international players. Most years he had basically no international players. Then in 2017 he had Lauri Markkanen and Dusan Ristic, and then the next year he had Deandre Ayton. Outside of those guys it was slim pickings. April 17Apr 17 Miller was on Rome today, and from the clips it sounded like a good interview. But those Xavier fans? Still, still salty in the comments. Jesus

April 18Apr 18 Fair, but Tech is also spending a shit ton on football. Good for them I guess. I would rather they run the Big 12 than anybody else.

April 18Apr 18 I suppose it's a coincidence that the entire Final Four is on that list. Where do Tech donors get their money? Mostly oil?

The guy driving football is Cody Campbell, former Tech football player and O&G billionaire. Basketball is Dusty Womble whose net worth I believe is tied to Tyler Technologies and he's an old school tech guy/venture capitalist. They're not the only ones, of course, but they're the most visible.

Well, those numbers say differently. And I think those numbers tell you if Miller starts doing what Barnes did here and what Beard was doing (plus more), we will be in that first tier. spending money on a premier coach >>>>>>>>>>> over spending money on mercenary players. whatever we spend on players during coach miller’s tenure will ultimately be way more than what we would have had to spend to get a tier 1 HC, and if miller doesn’t live up to barnes and beard (which is the most likely outcome) then we’ve spent tens of millions one rent-a-players with no real forward progress for our program. also i don’t want to hear that miller was the best we could get, because that’s just not true. first off, we’re Texas; this is CDC. we absolutely could have money whipped a tier one coach if that’s what we wanted to do. we didn’t. i’ve spoken to people and they’ve said that miller was always CDC’s guy, that we had zeroed in on him long ago and didn’t really look at anyone else. that’s why the reports of “the donors are willing to spend big” ultimately were true- we just didn’t spend big on the coach, we’re spending it on guys who will be longhorns for five months and have a minuscule impact on the program as a whole. this is the first time i’m questioning a CDC hire. for now i have to trust that he knows what he’s doing, because he got his guy. but the formula here is backwards- you drop huge bread on the coach, not the players. April 18Apr 18 also i simply cannot wait for the civil discourse which is sure to follow my dissenting post. just a hallmark of these forums, one that really makes this the most adult, earnest place to talk Texas Hoops.
