The year we played Arkansas was the year Beard got fired/we went to the Elite 8. They allowed fans/it was for charity and we kicked the ever-living shit out of them.

I believe we scrimmaged TCU and Colorado last year and beat both of them.

Again, scrimmage scores should be taken with a grain of salt.  Not all coaches treat them like real games - rest certain starters, put out weird lineup combos, limit minutes, etc.

Not a huge surprise, other than maybe Swain who I recall seeing in a couple of NBA mock drafts over the summer. I'm curious who will step up to be that clutch time, go-to scorer, as nobody on the roster has been that guy consistently yet in their career. Our entire roster seems to be role players, which I acknowledge you can get away with more in college than the NBA, but I have concerns about where our scoring/outside shooting will come from. It should be an interesting season to get a feel for how the recruiting/portal piece of the puzzle develops. Its a transition year and there wasn't much left here in Austin, but we didn't hire Miller to field rosters like this.

I have no idea what to expect from this team other than they won't be title contenders. Im just hoping to somehow see a .500 or slightly better conference record.

#1163

I have appropriately low expectations, because the talent is limited. However, I think the coaching improvement will be better than many of us are expecting. Or, by definition do I actually have higher expectations because I’ve predicted results better than my expectations? Oh no, I’ve gone cross-eyed.

Jordan Pope and Nic Codie each with 15 points. Very encouraged by what I'm hearing about Codie.

^^^ although, i have no way of knowing at this very moment, coach miller probably did not play both of our big men, just like the scrimmage with SMU.  however, 91-72 is a pretty LARGE point spread to lose by to TCU in a closed-door scrimmage.  i wonder what happened?  coach miller is a very experienced coach.  he probably was not aiming to win this...

I'm not too worried about that top-100 list.  We have a few players who could easily be on there.  Tramon Mark was #71 on a similar list last year and he is back with another year of experience and a better coach. Dailyn Swain is ranked #74 by On3 for this year.

Traore was 2x All Big-West and set to be one of Xavier's top 1-2 players before he got hurt last year.  Pope and Weaver are going to be better off the bench than the 2nd unit of almost anyone we play.  Vokietaitis was AAC RoY and will be good.

There are a lot of pieces to work with.  If they gel and play as a team we will be able to beat anybody.  If they don't, we will be in the bottom half of the SEC and have to grind to make the tourney.

Source: Texas' two five-men Matas Vokietaitis (ankle) and Lassina Traore (foot) have both been fully cleared to practice this week and are expected to be available for next week's opener against Duke. Both DNP in both of the Longhorns' closed scrimmages the past few weeks.

In those days, I don't think I would have considered Dr. J (6' 7") a "small forward".  Congrats to Dailyn for sure.

Sean Miller on playing with pace. Interesting insight into his offensive philosophy. From Road to Gameday '"The Sean Miller Era" on LHN: https://t.co/Wz0bNcI6Lp#HookEm

Iv’e said the same thing:

Texas head coach Sean Miller jokingly while previewing the Duke game: "There's a side of me that wakes up in the morning and says, 'Why in the world are we playing Duke?’ There are a lot of other choices out there. But we're going to take on the challenge."

This team should be so much more fun to watch (at least offensively) than the past two years.

Sure, the defensive efficiency will likely be worse, and we'll lose a couple games because we miss way too many threes, but I doubt we are going to be complaining about a general lack of competitiveness and lack of offensive identity around here. That'll be a nice change.

Haven’t paid any attention to the roster since Miller was hired. Is this a tourney team or does he need another year to clean up the mess he inherited?

It has a chance to be a tourney team but there’s no true point / ball handler and it’s not clear who we rely on when when we need to create a shot or draw a foul in crunch time.

Currently looks like a lot of guys who could average 8-11 points a game… but Miller comes in with a reputation of running an offense that gets players good shots so that side of the ball should be more entertaining.

A Miller offense without a PG is trash so let’s hope he finds one.

That's whats so odd about this era of basketball. Rosters can turnover almost completely every year even when the coach is stable. Throw in a new coach and I have no f'n idea what to expect. I'm skeptical about our guard play, but who the fuck knows, maybe Miller finds a way to make these pieces work and some of these guys develop into reliable shooters that work in his system. We have size all over, thats for sure. Its just amusing to me that I cant even speculate in my mind about what its really gonna look like when we open with......Duke, lulz.

Yeah I know we gonna open the season 0-1, so that Duke game just needs to be looked at as an exhibition/scrimmage, because we gonna get killed.

Here are the teams with the most rotation depth heading into the season, based on how good their 8th best player is at https://t.co/cegyfz96ax in the preseason. Arkansas, Louisville, and Michigan are the only teams with 8 players inside the top 400 nationally.
