I still today look over my shoulder to change lanes instead of using the mirror to see.

March 24Mar 24 Why is this guy being treated like he fucked his best friends sister lol it's a simple user name change

March 25Mar 25 Author Popular Post I'm not going to be doing a username change. I appreciate the community feedback and concern. I know that I'm an alcoholic. This isn't some shit that needs an intervention. I know much more about my personal* condition than any of you do and I am very aware of it and have been for years now. I wish that it was easier to quit drinking - I would like for it to not be a part of my life any longer. It's extremely difficult and it (unfortunately) takes time. I've done AA. I've been to rehab multiple times. I've been arrested twice as many times. There are ways in which I'm wired that are not conducive to success and I fight against that shit every day of my life. I made an ass out of myself and put some stupid shit on the table and when I attempted to make good on it you all as a whole communicated that it wasn't particularly important and that you'd like if I was less of an annoying drunken fuck as often as I have been since I started posting here over 6 years ago. I hear that feedback. I feel my own feedback when I drink whether it's my mind, body or spirit and it only gets worse. I'm painfully aware of all of this. I love this community and I seriously appreciate that y'all care and I apologize for whenever I'm undeservedly a dick towards any of you - because all it is is a manifestation of my own character flaws. Well - most of the time - some of the time y'all post really retarded shit. I try and work on being a better person every day and this is an opportunity for me to take it a bit more seriously. All love - ztejas Edited March 25Mar 25 by ztejas

March 25Mar 25 i personally think that you’re cool and i like you, and more than anything else, i appreciate your passion and your total lack of reservation when it comes to, for lack of a better term, standing on business. you have passionate takes and you’re willing to back them up and defend them, and i really respect that about you, and it makes me appreciate your presence here. all i can add is that i have no doubt that you’re aware of and working on your issues, and that i sincerely wish you well, and wish you happiness. you’re a longstanding member of this specific forum and it wouldn’t be the same without you. just keep doing your thing man, and know that most of us appreciate you and wish you well.
March 25Mar 25 I'm 41 and I've indulged in a shit ton of different vices myself over my lifetime. If you can name a recreational drug I've probably tried it at least once (aside from heroin, I was always terrified of that shit), and believe you me it's a goddamn miracle I didn't end up a cocaine addict or addicted to any of the myriad drugs I've experimented with over the years. I'm incredibly fortunate that I'm just not wired for addiction in that specific way, save for cigarettes (that one took me a long time and many relapses to kick), but [imo] it's just not the same. Alcoholism is a different beast and I have watched more than one friend and family member slowly, fatally, succumb to it and certainly don't want the same for you. All you can do is keep trying. Don't do it for us, do it for yourself. BELIEVE in yourself. Trust me, I understand depression and self loathing as well as anyone and that shit will derail you just as quickly as your addiction will. You mentioned that you've been to rehab, but have you ever seen a real therapist outside of rehab, 1-on-1, in person? If not, I would be willing to bet such a thing would change your life pretty quickly. I've told you this before, but you need to do something different, your normal routine clearly is enabling your alcoholism and you need to shake it up somehow. Find a new hobby, anything that you can distract yourself with when you feel the urge to drink. You can do it, we believe in you.
March 25Mar 25 Easier to say than do but get off the sauce. Many of us have walked or are walking your path
March 25Mar 25 So... I was down with changing the name, but that's not what you said you were going to do anyway. You said you'd create an account and let us name it .. which is lame. Good luck on the journey.
March 25Mar 25 I don’t think you’re a drunk annoying fuck. We’ve lost El Diablo and Lobo and I don’t want to lose you too.
March 25Mar 25 Without change, your situation is not going to end well, and it sure seems like the end is getting closer. I pray your behavior doesn’t end up affecting other lives too.

I think one of the reasons people drink is because they know it affects other folk’s lives negatively, which makes a decent person feel bad. Which makes them need to drink, ‘cause shame and pain. A sociopath would not give a shit. If a dash of empathy for one’s behavior affecting others is all that was needed to stop - you’d have no alcoholics. As I finished typing this, I realized you might’ve been talking about “don’t drive your drunk ass around until you pass out and take out a whole family when you cross the centerline.” My brother-in-law is currently a guest of the state of Georgia for his fifth DUI. So it’s easier said than done.
March 25Mar 25 Popular Post Keep the name. You’re a great poster. Make the change when you want to make it. Have made many great posts. I have 4 years clean from fentanyl and heroin…don’t tell me you can’t stop drinking. You can…
March 25Mar 25 I was just running through my head all the people I knew who died from substance abuse and all those whose lives it destroyed. Sadly, not a short list. Usually, you have to bottom out hard to get the resolve, but if/when it’s time find a sponsor to walk beside you. Really hard to do it alone. No judgement, nothing but love. You will never be as horrible as I have been. Freetejas

March 25Mar 25 I wonder if Wasatchhorn ever wound up on Surly with a new handle. He complained about “RC Didn’t Offer”being a recruiting forum title that needed to be changed as irrelevant - and I suggested to black lab that Wasatchhorn be changed to ‘RC Slocum’. Which he did. I hope that did not run him off forever

March 27Mar 27 Just The Tip Honey. Our old bowling team name. We had to use it because there was already a team called the Bowl Movements

March 27Mar 27 What @Derka said. He knows. Hell, we all know. Not just all these Surly folks, but every iteration of every poster who's ever been on all the Texas boards that led to this one ... sometimes flawed, but always funny, profane, human, smart as hell, accomplished, tough. Longhorns. Hook 'em, @ztejas.
March 27Mar 27 I support the overall sentiment, but never thought I’d see the day the surl would talk someone out of a funny handle change. Y’all gettin soft in your old age.

March 27Mar 27 ztejas wants to quit drinking he knows it's not a great solution and causes problems. But from my experience (and reading what he said) he has other major problems and booze/drugs is the way he is coping and solving for THOSE underlying problems. He acknowledges that and until/unless he gets those fundamental problems fixed, "just try quitting drinking again" isn't going to work. He's drinking to medicate some bigger issues, likely mental ones. So, knowing that, it's not very helpful and might even be discouraging to pile on him for being an alky IMO. Alcoholism/addiction isn’t a chicken or the egg argument, please learn that. If you have to question if you’re an alcoholic, you’re already there. You don’t think the drinking plays a role in the underlying problems-self worth, self respect, lack of love, lack of motivation, trauma? it’s a disease, no ifs ands about it. Read the Big Book one day, doesn’t matter if you’re an alcoholic or not but you’ll learn a lot about life and it seems like you need to

It's their solution to their problems. It sounded like ztejas was saying that. Regardless I wish you well @ztejas!
