ESPN updated their top 10 prospects for every team, something to peruse on off-day. No real surprises here, but other teams did get some prospects for selling at the deadline.

I’m surprised that Ullola isn’t in the Top 10. He has 3.7 ERA in Sugarland this year which seems pretty good to me since 50% of the games are played in altitude. He strikes out more than 1 batter per inning. He definitely needs to work on walking fewer hitters.

They are dumb. He should be 1 on the list imo.
having the astros system with 2 pitchers in the top 10 at 8 and 9 is dumb. I can almost guarantee you that 75% of the value in our system is in arms.

Also, just crunched all the AL numbers on pitchers. I find it extremely likely that Brown should finish 3rd or so if the season were to end today. Anything lower than that and honestly the voters will have gotten it wrong. I’m not saying he’s guaranteed for finish top 3 but if he can get it to the house with an era 2.5 or lower I would bet he’s top 3 and we get the pick.

If you have a top 100 prospect up on the first day of the season with rookie eligibility the team gets an extra draft pick if:

1) they win ROY

2) they finish top 3 in cy young before they become arbitration eligible

3) same as 2 but MVP.
they did this to try to incentivize teams to not fuck with service time manipulation in the last CBA.

Yep, his H/R splits are insane. He needs to get his shit under control, 63 BBs in 82.2 IP is awful.

Also, using him as a bulk reliever seems like a stupid thing, his last two appearences have been awful.

Orioles up 5-0 in a rain delay in the top of the 6th.

It's getaway day, should probably just call it.

Instead of a closer in the playoffs, just have the starter go 6 and an injured returning starter go 3.  Sixty percent of the time, Brad Peacock works every time.

So what's your top 5/10?  Is Framber in there somewhere? Any relievers that are close to the top?  There was some buzz about Clase last year being considered with about a .85 ERA and nearly 50 saves. Likely would never happen with the voters keeping out non-starters, but still an interesting possibility.

Probably not on Framber. The problem with Cy young and getting in the top 10 is only 3 guys get votes, so there typically isn’t even a top 10 over the course of a full season, because guys don’t even get votes that would slot in the 8/9/10 spot the way they do in MVP voting.
if he finishes super strong he might get a couple votes here and there which would definitely put him in the top 10.

It’s amazing that he was able to become an MLB player by overcoming the adversity of not being able to hit.
I bet that doesn’t stay long.

Three guys penciled in as SP at some point this season have not made a single appearance, a fourth, Zach Eflin, been on IL twice and is now done for the season along with closer, Felix Bautista.  Charley Morton’s season start was A.W.F.U.L. and he was traded.  In fact, they traded anyone with perceived value for P and other castoffs who may be part of offseason deals.

Pitching isn’t the only issue.  Gunnar Henderson was injured and missed the first month of the season.  Jordan Westburg had recurring problems with a wrist broken last season, then had a round with a hamstring.  Colton Cowser broke a wrist sliding into 1B then concussed himself crashing into the OF.  Heston Kjerstad was beaned last year and has regressed from an already weak start to his ML career.

Ryan Mountcastle missed 2+ months with a hamstring.  Tyler O’Neill is as familiar with the O’s IL as all of the other teams he’s been hurt for.  Adley Rutschman missed time with a back problem.  The guy they signed to back him up, Gary Sanchez, is on the IL and done as an Oriole.  I know I’m missing someone or three.

Since the trade line, they have not started an OF I’d ever heard of .. no joke.  I knew of one of their three “passing thru” C while both Rutschman and Sanchez were out at the same time.

Truly need a scorecard .. numbers in the 60-80 range are not uncommon.  “Nobodies” is a perfect descriptor.

I appreciate all that, and I know you were bat signaled to chime in, and I know you’re not asking for it, but the Astros thread is not the place for pity on injuries.

that said if any team has had it as bad/worse, that’s pretty rough. Makes me appreciate more what this Astros team has done this year, 15 over instead of 11 under, cobbling together what they have.

should be a fun series.

Not making excuses or looking for pity because injuries hit everyone.  It’s how management reacts that matters.

Mike Elias gets an F.  He is the undisputed target of ire among O’s fans.  Throwing multimillion💰contracts at Tyler O’Neill, Charley Morton, and Gary Sanchez can’t be justified.  Boy genius played his fiddle as the place burned down.

Which is crazy as I know a lot of folks here (myself included) thought very highly of Elias.

but yeah, those contracts are inexcusable. (Not that we haven’t had our own share)

I'm a little disinclined to criticize GM's for relatively low dollar contracts that don't work out, but the inability of the Orioles to get a real stud out of all those high draft picks is surprisingly bad.  They've been a Baseball America darling for years and haven't done anything to build on 2023.  Luhnow would have consolidated some of those prospects into major league pitchers.
