March 29Mar 29 In for this. I've only ever seen boogie nights. Planning on a PTA watch party thru the week as the wife is out of town. Any recs on where to start?

Inherent Vice and Licorice Pizza are fun. The rest of his movies are not fun. Great, but not fun. PTA is a genius. He got Oscar worthy performances from Mark fucking Wahlberg and Tom Cruise.

Not sure there is a right answer to this, but I would watch them in chronological order unless you are just looking for the highlights. There Will Be Blood and The Master are two of the great films in cinema history, but they are certainly heavy. Phantom Thread is in my personal top 3 for PTA (username checks out), but some find it slow. Magnolia is an epic. Licorice Pizza will feel like a refreshing iced tea after watching all the others. Inherent Vice, Hard 8 and Punch Drunk Love are historically considered his lesser films, but even those would be the best films in most other directors’ filmography. PTA, Coens, and Tarantino... magnificent trio. might not always be the best ever, but they consistently make original, interesting and usually fantastic films!
March 31Mar 31 I’m a little jealous of someone watching all of those PTA films for the first time. But I’ve somehow never seen The Master so I get to check that out with fresh eyes.

Skipped Boogie Nights as I've already seen, but will probably go back and rewatach after I finish the others.

I saw the Master when it first came out in the theaters. I liked it a lot. But over the years I’ve revisited it and it’s highly rewatchable. Some amazing performances and moments in there, obviously led by Hoffman and Phoenix.

March 31Mar 31 My PTA ranking: 1a) There Will Be Blood 1b) Boogie Nights 1c) Magnolia Seriously can't choose between the three. They're all perfect. Slight Drop 4) Phantom Thread 5) Punch Drunk Love Excellent films. Just a notch below the top three. Slight Drop 6) Hard 8 7) Licorice Pizza Very good movies. Hard 8 being his first film, it shows the promise of what's to come. Licorice Pizza is just a straightforward (for PTA) coming of age/love story that I really enjoyed. It's just not as ambitious or grand as the films in the top two tiers. Pretty Big Drop 😎 The Master 9) Inherent Vice I understand that The Master is an epic film. I just thought it was boring. Inherent Vice is the only PTA film I haven't finished. Tried watching it twice and was so bored I fell asleep both times and never bothered powering through to finish.

April 8Apr 8 I’m cautious about this film. Several hours into Vineland, and it’s weirder than Inherent Vice, another Pynchon novel. If it’s a faithful adaptation, it probably will be I believe PTA and Pynchon are tight, I’m not confident it will be well received by a main stream audience. PTA is one of the best, so maybe he can thread a Big Lebowski needle here. You’re not paying Leo to make a cult classic. I hope it’s good. The Ringer movie people saw additional footage at CinemaCon, and they said it was better than the trailer which they didn’t care for. Leo did make an in person appearance. He’s probably not dragging himself off his yacht if he thought the movie sucked.

Dang, I feel bad as it's the only one I skipped from the collection, but my buddy who's a huge PTA fan, told me skip it. So skipped it.
April 10Apr 10 You gotta break up Inherent Vice over multiple watches. I think I watched the whole thing(?) during a long weekend when Starz or MGM+ was free on DirectTV. They kept playing it and I kept dropping in. I remember some very nice eye candy. Probably Martin Short’s least annoying performance since… geez… Captain Ron.
April 30Apr 30 I've had Inherent Vice on my DVR for years and years. I've caught bits and pieces of it live over the years but always held off watching because I wanted to start at the beginning. It took me two sittings to finish it. It's OK, maybe good, but not great. It's too long IMO. Phoenix is great as the stoner PI. I couldn't quite figure out how Brolin was wrapped up with the heroin/smuggling operation. Was he in on it or was he just trying to pin it on Phoenix at the end? Then he showed up at Phoenix's beachside place at the end and busted the door down. I died when Brolin was going to town on the popsicle BJ-style and Phoenix looked over with a look of disgust. The Asian chick was smoke and gotta love full frontal from Sam Waterston's daughter. I followed this up by knocking out Licorice Pizza a few nights later. Not quite sure what to make of that one either. I did say I dug the 60's/70's Los Angeles worlds he built for the two movies. "Let's go to the Cock!" If pinned down, I probably give both solid 7's out of 10. (I hope this new one is much better.)
May 31May 31 I loved licorice pizza. Bradley Cooper and Sean Penns cameos were fantastic and Haim and Hoffman were solid as basically first time actors in the leads. Didn't realize Momma Haim was PTAs teacher growing up and he had a crush on her. Finished Inherent Vice last night. It was fine, didnt have the noticable long takes that are signature PTA. It was hard to follow, but I think that was the point as Doc was basically lost the entire time too. Prob rank em: Magnolia, There will be blood, licorice pizza, punch drunk, the master, boogie, hard 8, phantom thread, inherent vice. But that's like my opinion man.

September 4Sep 4 The marketing has been odd. The uniformed probably think this another remake of Man on Fire.

September 18Sep 18 Can't wait to see this one. LA Times: He's made the most incendiary movie of the year. But Paul Thomas Anderson remains an optimist https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/movies/articles/hes-made-most-incendiary-movie-100000774.html
September 18Sep 18 I’ve been reading Vineland in anticipation of this movie. It’ll be interesting to see how much the movie incorporates form he book. Regardless, the book has me more stoked to see this one.

September 20Sep 20 15 hours of Vineland left. 4 work days. I think I can do it if I lock in and ignore true crime podcasts for a week.
September 20Sep 20 So after seeing this thread and learning who PTA is and I am bored and thought hey let me see what I can use Netflix or prime to watch. Inherent Vice. Be honest the cast gave me good vibes but I was just a little too distracted to really follow all the little nuisance stuff. Maybe watch when I can concentrate better. It does say the actors working with him must like his stuff or they overpay.

I actually like it with the subtitles on and you can pick up more of the subtlety of the vernacular. There Will Be Blood, The Master, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love. Those might be better starting spots. I’m out of town until late Wednesday pm but I might try to see OBAA Thursday during the day at my quirky local theater. Although I’d love to see it in VistaVision in Union Sq.

I finally just flipped it on and stuck with it. I’ve now seen it several times because HBO runs it quite a bit. I’ll watch scenes here and there. Phoenix and Brolin are fantastic and I love the 60’s/70’s LA setting. It’s fun.
