Inherent Vice. Be honest the cast gave me good vibes but I was just a little too distracted to really follow all the little nuisance stuff. Maybe watch when I can concentrate better. It does say the actors working with him must like his stuff or they overpay. Inherent Vice is probably his most polarizing and least popular film. It's the only one I've been unable to finish, and the only one I didn't enjoy on pretty much any level. Fwiw, it's probably the only film I'd tell someone who has never seen a PTA film to avoid. I'd start with Boogie Nights, as it is probably his most well known film. There Will Be Blood is his masterpiece. Magnolia is one my personal faves. Punch Drunk Love is also so very good and Sandler is amazing in it.
September 22Sep 22 I finally watched Inherent Vice for the first time the other day. Not my favorite PTA certainly, but still really liked it. His movies just have such a strong style and vibe to them. Was a bit convoluted and hard to follow, but makes me want to rewatch with subtitles. Also, Katherine Waterson, I wasn't familiar with your game. Got my tickets for One Battle in 70mm at Alamo on Friday, can't wait.
September 23Sep 23 The trailers for this movie have been horrible. The first set were "It's quirky! Leo makes a phone call and they hang up on him!" The next set were wall to wall action. They will need strong word of mouth to make any money.

PTA is a better screenwriter than Thomas Pynchon. I don’t think anyone would argue otherwise. Again based on the trailers, I could see Leo and Del Toro’s characters in the first 3 hours of the book. It then jumps to a femme fatale ninja story with hippies and communes and The Man. The plan is to finish Vineland and roll up to the matinee showing on Friday.

Have noticed her in a couple of things since and Vice is where she looks the best. 2 hours ago, zman13 said: The trailers for this movie have been horrible. The first set were "It's quirky! September 24Sep 24 I guess I could have guessed there was some of this but a lot of the reviews mention the comedic aspects. One calling it "screwball". Makes me want to see it that much more.
September 24Sep 24 I saw it this evening at Fantastic Fest. I recognized the title from this forum but didn't know anything about it going into it... thoroughly enjoyed it- it's good.

September 26Sep 26 This was a masterpiece of a movie with some great cinematography. Col. Lockjaw brought the lulz every time he started walking. Nailed America in 2025 to a T.

September 26Sep 26 Plenty of comedy. Leo's character was all over the place, but it made sense why.Leo’s character would be a great Halloween costume.

September 27Sep 27 It’s a banger. Incredible energy to the film, although the opening sequence/prologue stands out as very distinct from the rest of the movie. Leo is unsurprisingly very good, but also very funny. Chase Infiniti as the daughter was also excellent. Will probably see again.
September 27Sep 27 Knocked my socks off. Will absolutely require multiple viewings to absorb everything. See it on the biggest screen you can find.
September 27Sep 27 Saw it at a small local theater and I’ll probably go see it on Vista or 70mm next week. The road scenes/camera moves were amazing.

September 27Sep 27 Thoughts. Quote - I think it’ll grow on me. I like the director. I like all the actors. - I think reading Vineland right before maybe had me expecting something very different than the film. Vineland is often absurdly funny, and has a very cool Kill Bill like training back story. The movie just slams the ninja nuns in there without any story. - That said saying One Battle After Another is based on Vineland is like saying Independence Day is based on kid’s ray gun commercials from the 80’s. PTA did his own thing. He’s the artist. That’s his choice. - 1’m sure Penn’s performance will be dissected. He’s doing a General Buck Turgidson turned up to 111 in 2025. It mostly works because Penn is a great actor, but could this person possibly exist? Some people will say yes, some people will say no.

September 28Sep 28 Saw it this afternoon with Jr and the wife. I was ready to complain about it until the final song.* After that I'll say it was a good film. My expectations were too high going in and it didn't meet them, but that's my problem. * Spoiler Driving away to that song made me worry that Buffalo Bill might get to her. But that song brought the whole "Fighting the system is the most American thing you can do" theme home for me. Edited September 28Sep 28 by HornOnTheBayou
September 28Sep 28 I enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought it was amusing that Leo’s character was like Indiana Jones in Raiders. Nothing he did mattered to the outcome of the story. Also, he didn’t really do anything but charge his phone.

September 28Sep 28 A few comedic lines/scenes that stuck with me Spoiler The entire dance pick up scene. “Who’s that little freak at the door!?” “What’s up, homie” “Not you, ese” Leo trying to keep up with the younger guys and ultimately falling off the roof del Toro after being pulled over. “A few small beers” Every single time he was on the phone with the operator “Mexican hairless!” I could go on and on. Incredibly hilarious movie
September 28Sep 28 Just got back from Alamo. Really good flick, felt like three distinct movies in terms of flow. Entire cast was nails. Absolutely two thumbs up from me.

Spoiler No mention yet of the Christmas Warriors, or whatever they were called? I laughed every time they said "All hail St Nick". Plus, the king from the old Bud Light commercials was the assassin.

September 29Sep 29 Saw it yesterday. Mostly 100 critic scores on Metacritic which surprises me as I figured the critics would find reasons to knock down their scores. I enjoyed it. Also was surprised the runtime was 162 minutes. Definitely recommend emptying the bladder beforehand because there's not any real lulls. I enjoyed Benicio del Torro's role although his bad wig and living situation confused me. Di Caprio seeming to imitate Nicholson's acting was a little annoying, and the three different types of movies welded together was strange, but effective in the end. In retrospect I liked that the entire film wasn't melancholy and sentimental.
September 29Sep 29 Saw it again this afternoon. Went even harder. PTA's range and skill are just incredible.
September 30Sep 30 I saw it on Imax this weekend and loved it. I might sneak out of work later this week and catch it again. I loved that for all the freaking out Di Capro was doing, Benico Del Toro was just calmly moving hundreds of migrants offsite while also managing his hippy friend having a total meltdown. And in the end, the only thing he caught was a DUI. Edited September 30Sep 30 by Bateshorn

September 30Sep 30 just stepped out, haven't read the thread yet. holy shit this is the best movie i've seen in literally years. incredible in all aspects. i am completely blown away. Spoiler i can't really explain but i was somehow just feeling all the emotions. at the end was just a huge rush. i think it was...hope? i have no idea why but it was a strange experience. i was giggling and also on the verge of tears and also 😮 it was so much and so insane but also like...just everything that everybody thinks is happening and also is happening and needs to happen and just...wow. wowowow. this is exactly why i love movies.

October 1Oct 1 Unpopular opinion but only a 6-7 out of ten for a first viewing. I'll watch it again. Some movies grow on me. Thought Penn was great and Del Toro was cooler than the other side of the pillow in the face of oncoming disaster. Plus the sudden head shot on the chick from Haim and some others made me jump out of my seat once or twice.
