We got a good look at what America is and is becoming as far as fascism and hate taking hold, but I did leave feeling hopeful for something better. This film did a great job intertwining our current situation with the story. This movie hit me pretty good. I have zero to add that would be negative because not one part of the film left me feeling like it missed the mark. Best film I have watched since my favorite movie of all-time, Jojo Rabbit, came out in October of 2019.

There was some definite middle finger going towards the government there with what his character was doing. The living situation is understandable certainly. It was a very small issue but at the time I sensed a disconnect in location and style of that very industrial building compared to the house in the forest where Bob and Willa lived. I forget the term for when characters in a film or tv show are suddenly in a different location that wouldn't be possible in reality. But like that. Edited October 1Oct 1 by Chopper

One film I can recall that being the case is my favorite Christmas movie, Christmas Vacation. Clark works in the city, lives in the suburbs and then he’s in the Rockies looking for a Christmas tree.
October 1Oct 1 Saw this, very little understanding of what it is other than PTA and people are bitching about woke (but they do that about literally everything). Loved it, goddamn. Had to piss for an hour, waited. One small detail is I loved the guy driving the van after the bank scene. He captured that feeling perfectly. Finding out time. 21 hours ago, KaiserSoze said: Last weekend I asked someone if they were a member of the Christmas Adventurers Club. They said "no" but not very convincingly. I had the thought that this is going to end up coming up on Surly.

I think the closest you could probably get to that in real life is Portland. It gets woodsy pretty quickly once you leave Portland proper. But, it's obviously entirely fictitious in the movie. The Texas Dip where they shot the car chase is in San Diego county.

October 3Oct 3 Went back for a 2nd viewing in IMAX last night. This film will hold up well over time. What a great, great film. Everything just worked so well. The music throughout was really cool as well.
October 3Oct 3 I'm still stewing on my thoughts, but what a rich experience. It's just so welcome to have a film chock full of ideas. I was trying to place PTA in the pantheon of filmmakers, and one thing I think he does better than anyone else consistently is endings. A lot of that is the ride leading up to it, but his super-power is wrapping it up.
October 3Oct 3 Spoiler I thought it was odd that they made perfidia a rat who directly got her comrades killed in the interest of saving her own skin. seemed out of line with her character.

Spoiler I don’t know your familiarity with progressive politics, and I’m not CR-ing, but the core rule of the left is “don’t name names.” But it’s never really been true, or at best, it’s a guideline, not a rule(see Kazan, Elia). To me Perfida followed a long line of left wing radicals who talked the talk, walked the walk…right up until she was staring down the barrel of life prison. Putting aside the above, Perfida’s activism was more about the action being the juice (to paraphrase Heat) than any true political ideology. Edited October 4Oct 4 by Bateshorn

October 4Oct 4 I don't get the hype. I thought it was heavy-handed to the point of silliness and pretty boring outside of the bank robbery and the chase at the end (and even that was ruined by Leo having no problem rolling to a gentle stop short of the other cars).
October 4Oct 4 aside from everything else in the movie I thought Leo was worth the price of admission alone. he was pure entertainment whenever he was on screen.

Edit: and her girlfriend is in public relations? Why would you tell people that? October 4Oct 4 I thought Perfidia’s character was consistent throughout. Spoiler Her being self serving and addicted to the rush rather than some genuine die hard steady as a rock adherent to the cause (like benicio) was there through the whole first part. Also reinforced as not atypical by the more casually less strong other members of the group who got a chance to flip - white dude, Afro pussy. I assume it was obvious and I missed it or maybe just obvious by her walking out, but do we know if what’s her face saved her skin at the nunnery?

October 5Oct 5 During that 15 minutes, the funny part is that I did actually think of this board. "This Antifa wet dream is what 90 percent of those fuckers WISH they could do in real life., but can't get out of the basement." Then I also remembered one of my wife's cousins who will be in prison for the rest of her life because of an attack on an law enforcement agents. I guess it wasn't really funny ha-ha...

I leave movies early as well. I usually give them 30-45 minutes before I'm out. Very rarely do I bail on one quicker than that. Not every movie is for everyone. There are really good movies that I do not connect with so I get it. I think that this movie veers quite a ways away from how it began. Someone in this thread said it felt like three different movies if I remember correctly. Do I think you missed out on some cool stuff? Sure. Col. Lockjaw was worth watching just by himself. It's you and your wife's time though so who am I to tell you to stay for a movie you did not want to stay for?

October 6Oct 6 Has there been a character on screen who’s been more vile without speaking a word or doing anything than Lockjaw? Just his look and demeanor was enough to know he was unhinged in the worst ways possible.
October 6Oct 6 It's funny but the second in command, James Raterman, who is actually a military interrogator in real life, came off as much more menacing by the end. His final interview with Regina Hall was quietly very scary.

October 6Oct 6 No way to know what you’re missing if you walk out when the movie isn’t your thing out of the gate, but the first 30 minutes were a very different tone than the final two hours.
October 6Oct 6 Popular Post Saw it a second time yesterday in 70mm IMAX. Hot damn this movie is electric. A film about the complexity of motherhood, fatherhood and family. A film about generational divide. A film about the limits of idealism when confronted by real world forces. A film that is fucking hilarious. A film that features one of the great car chase scenes in cinema history. Honestly pretty impressive slorch was able to glean all of that before the title card hit.
