March 28Mar 28 How much longer do we think we'll have the ability to recognize earthquakes and nuclear detonations around the world before it's deemed unnecessary and socialist to do so?

March 28Mar 28 Popular Post we got absolutely rocked today here in bangkok. apparently there are 81 people “trapped” in the rubble of the collapsed building. i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that building is currently a pile of crumbled concrete, glass, and twisted rebar. i would be absolutely shocked if any survivors are pulled from there. my condo unit here is a new build, luxury unit, from one of the most reputable developers and it got fucking rattled today. it was like a movie, walls cracking, building swaying, alarms blaring, while i’m running around trying to figure what the hell was going on. every wall in the unit has cracks running thru it. it seemed as if the whole thing might come down during the most intense part of the quake. the whole city shut down after it happened. but seems like everyone is safe outside of the construction workers that were in the collapsed building. what i’m not looking forward to is the reports to come from myanmar, where i’m sure casualties are much higher, damage is more widespread, and information will be slow to get out.

I'd be freaked out right now if I were in your shoes. Edited March 28Mar 28 by bolverk

Yeah, that was WTC 9/11 level destruction. Smaller building, but surviving that would be a miracle.

Are you still in your building? I’m not sure I could be inside one of those high rises post quake without being severely sedated.
March 28Mar 28 Myanmar has the highest density of scam call centers in the World, all ran by Chinese gangs. This probably is due to Karma more than coincidence. CHIEF
March 28Mar 28 here’s the entrance to my unit: it’s like this all around, but i don’t think i’ve got it particularly bad compared to what i’ve seen from others. there’s some condos where residents haven’t been let back inside yet. elevators aren’t working here so it’s a trek up and down 11 flights of stairs to get out. that would be 45 if you’re on the top floor.

March 28Mar 28 Man I know you want to stay but there could be some powerful ass aftershocks with a quake that big.

Yeah we went to Koh Samui & Bangkok last year. Pretty sure we were driven along that highway where the building collapsed, on the way to the floating market & some other sites. /csb Godspeed, @bangkok. I'd echo the sentiments that you shpuld gtfo, but I'm not sure I'd know where to go that's any safer at this point.

HOWEVER, looking at the pics of the collapsed building and knowing that in any construction process, stabilization is key. So either that building was at a vulnerable point in its construction or it wasn't designed correctly. One can't help but wonder how many other buildings are that in the same boat. I know enough about seismic design to know it's still not to a point where every building can withstand major earthquakes like that. Scary.
March 28Mar 28 If I ever need something built I’m hiring an engineer from Myanmar/Thailand. 8.0 quake and literally the only damage was a building still under construction. That’s insane.

March 28Mar 28 Popular Post Just now, Helobious said: In what would is 8.0 almost 3x larger than 7.7? When it’s a logarithmic scale you fucking moron. 7 to 8 is 10x larger.
March 28Mar 28 I’m starting to think this has to be a bit by helobious. On the Richter scale, an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 releases about 32 times more energy than one of magnitude 7.7, indicating a significant increase in destructive power. Here's a breakdown of the difference: Richter Scale: The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale, meaning each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in the amplitude of seismic waves and a much larger increase in energy released. 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake is considered a major earthquake, capable of causing serious damage over large areas. 8.0 Magnitude Earthquake: An 8.0 magnitude earthquake is classified as a great earthquake, potentially causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

Is that plaster with a hole through it? It looks like concrete in the picture. If it is, that building is absolutely not safe until it’s been thoroughly inspected
