I’ve read it described as Rocky Horror Picture show for teen nerd boys. Still boggles the mind that analysts didn’t realize the power of Minecraft, YouTube and boys and how that would translate to a smash hit.

Probably thought the game was too old and that people would be more willing to move on to GTA or something. I predict the studios will look to make Roblox or Skyrim/GTA into a movie, rush it out, and make it incredibly shitty/not fun and then declare the genre dead.

Minecraft is still insanely popular right now. I remember blowing it off when it came out many years ago, but here we are in 2025 and my middle schooler and his friends are running their own servers, spending birthday money on Hypixel, playing after school with each other, etc. and then there are all of the Lego arts, the other toys etc.

So it seems like the first teaser or whatever really tweaked some of the purist types, but the last trailer or two won them over, plus word of mouth from the YouTubers who saw sneak previews and who were actually in it. And they are going to be pissed if there’s not a sequel because the last scene with Steve meeting Alex got them going.
April 6Apr 6 Just watched with a passel of 7th grade boys. Multiple spontaneous applauses and what not. Definitely a hit for them. They made it into a social event or 10 decide to get together on a Sunday for it. Pretty impressive as far as a bunch of kids with zero executive function.

I don’t know of any movie recently where kids are asking to go with their friends like the Minecraft movie. Dogman, a few. But nothing else in years. Edited April 6Apr 6 by atomheartbevo

But watching it with friends (and I assume he meant engaging with it, laughing at it, the experience) it's a 10"

April 8Apr 8 It's typically movies that you are meant to check your brain at the door. Often kids movies. Yes Pixar has shown us that an adult can be emotionally engaged in a children's movie as well, but not everything is meant to hit that bar.
April 8Apr 8 My 7 year old wants to see it so I'll take him. Sounds like there is some stuff that a grownup that knows nothing about the game can find some entertainment in so that's promising.
April 8Apr 8 Author The $163 million opening weekend of A Minecraft Movie is a huge success story and one that Hollywood's sorely needed in recent months. It's a bigger opening than Barbie, which went on to become the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history, and bigger than Inside Out 2, which was the highest-grossing film of 2024 with $1.7 billion at the global box office.

For their job, they have to see nearly all of them. As a result, they tend to award originality and films that defy expectations more than the general public do. ALL THAT SAID... having read a few of the reviews, most didn't get it, including the ones who liked it.

April 9Apr 9 I just got back from a 4DX showing. That movie was GREAT to watch. Loved the back and forth with Jack Black and Momoa. If you are able to and have one nearby, go to Regal and watch it in that format. Just remember to sit your drink on the floor or it might make a mess with all the moving and shaking going on with the seat. 4DX is going to be the best way to see Minecraft, by far. I am going to try to go back next week. It is a movie that just makes you feel good and it was really well done. Edited April 9Apr 9 by UpperWestside
April 13Apr 13 Just got back. Took my 10 year old. I enjoyed it, but really got a kick out of all the kids and teenagers screaming, clapping, and singing. I normally hate any talking by the audience, but there is just no way to not expect it in this one. The sheer joy on my kids face, and his all out clapping just made it a blast.

April 15Apr 15 Went Sunday. We were there in time for the 330 but it was practically sold out so we waited for the 4. Had a great time. Also, my kids never watched Lilo and stitch, but we all want to see it after the preview.

I try to watch movies like this by attempting to see these movies like I would have when I was a child. Seeing stuff like this reminds me to always keep that childlike love for a movie like this. I left the movie just feeling better and that's a great thing for a movie to be able to do.

It's a little girl and an alien she's trying to protect. Simple works a lot better than a weird-ass fairy tale written over 200 years ago.

I doubt there will be one white person wondering "Where the white folks at?!?" in this movie.

Snow White was a weird fucking story that was never going to translate well to live action on the big screen if you stuck to the look of the original Disney film, and the dwarves look fucking weird as well. Same with a lot of the other Brothers Grimm stuff. The uncanny valley stuff with the dwarves and the whole apple/kiss plot (true loves kiss which was in a lot of other Disney movies like Sleeping Beauty) and the central plot point being she was supposed to have her heart cut out (in a kid’s movie) in general is just creepy whereas Stitch is cute and lighthearted. We tend to forget how dark some of the OG Disney films are. If you wan to do modern Brothers Grimm, something like Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters is the way to go with Gemma Arterton, because just adding Gemma Arterton makes any of them better. Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Lion King, Lilo and Stitch, are much easier to adapt either because the themes are more timely and more recognizable, or the protagonists gel better with the audience,

April 19Apr 19 Author I’m thinking Minecraft’s reign of terror is over. Looking up tickets for this weekend to take the grandkids to the King of Kings Easter movie and everywhere it’s sold out today and tomorrow but Minecraft is open for even good seats. I think Minecraft loses steam and might not beat Mario’s total after a torrid start.

Oh, so as I sit down to watch the movie, a character on screen starts talking about how Snow White isn't very white? Does her mother, the queen, have a DEI program? Are the Seven Dwarves gay men living in a menage, with Dopey being Free Use? I didn't think so. It's all in your heads. Get that shit outta here.
