17 year old stabbed to death by another 17 year old at Frisco track meet

I'm glad you survived.  I stumbled into track when my son made the team.  I had absolutely no concept of how boring a track meet could be, especially a one-day meet.  He did five events -- sprints, jumps and a relay.  It took ALL DAY every one-day meet.  Drove me crazy.  I started driving him to meets and going back home to Austin.  Good luck, son, I'll pick you up at 6.

My daughter ran distance, so she'd run the first race of the day, and then 6 hours later, the next-to-last race of the day.

We'd drive to, say, Lockhart, watch her run the 2-mile, eat lunch at Kreuz, drive back home to work, then drive back to Lockhart, get dinner at Black's, and then watch her run the mile.

It's amazing how far one becomes willing to drive as opposed to sitting on bleachers for 10 hours.

I've spent many an hour sitting in my truck working on my laptop with the engine running and the AC on. My daughter being done with track might help global warming.

Triple jump may be the worst thing that a kid can do to their body.

Other than apparently telling a kid to leave your school tent and getting stupid when they want to pick a fight.

I ran track in HS. I've been to most of my daughter's track meets. Yet, I still have no idea what the triple jump is.

I guess I could google it, but I prefer to remain ignorant in this case.

Frisco ISD track meet stabbing suspect said it was self-defense, police report says: https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2025/04/04/frisco-isd-track-meet-stabbing-suspect-said-it-was-self-defense-police-report-says/

Witnesses told police Karmelo Anthony, 17, fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf, 17, after being either grabbed or shoved.

The teen suspect in a fatal stabbing at a Frisco ISD track meet told police he stabbed Austin Metcalf after the other teen grabbed him during an altercation, according to an arrest report obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

Karmelo remained in Collin County jail Friday in lieu of a $1 million bond, according to jail records. He faces a murder charge. An attorney listed as representing him did not immediately return messages seeking comment Friday morning.

Witnesses told police the altercation began when Karmelo sat under Memorial High’s assigned tent. Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, told The News that students were sitting under the tents due to a rain delay at the track meet. Austin told Karmelo he needed to move, the report said. Karmelo reached inside his bag and said to Austin “Touch me and see what happens,” the report said. Austin then touched Karmelo, who then said “Punch me and see what happens.”

Austin then grabbed Karmelo to tell him to move, and Karmelo pulled out a knife, stabbed Austin once in the chest and ran away, the witness told police. Another witness told police Austin shoved Karmelo before he was stabbed.

After being stabbed, Austin grabbed his chest and told bystanders to call for help, the report says. Athletic trainers reportedly tended to him before first responders arrived.

Austin was a junior at Frisco Memorial High School. He was a football player who was voted MVP of his school’s team and named a second-team all-district linebacker. His father told The News that Austin was being recruited to play college football.

Karmelo is a student at Frisco Centennial High School, and according to his Instagram account, is also a football player at his school and received college football offers.

Whether the incident was captured on camera was unclear Friday. Officer Grant Cottingham, a police spokesperson, declined to say in response to an inquiry from The News, citing the ongoing investigation.

According to the Frisco police report, police were called at about 10 a.m. A witness pointed out Karmelo to a school resource officer as the suspect. As the officer approached Karmelo, he told the officer “I was defending myself,” and “he put his hands on me,” according to the report.

The officer handcuffed Karmelo, and as another officer approached, the arresting officer said he had the alleged suspect in custody. According to the report, Karmelo said “I’m not alleged, I did it.”

As the officer walked Karmelo to his patrol car, the teen reportedly began “crying hysterically” and said “he put his hands on me, I told him not to.” Another officer wrote in the report that Karmelo asked if what happened could be considered self-defense.

It seems really stupid for the knees, esp for younger kids they throw at it without any real training on form.

My kid took 3rd at district on triple jump.  He had absolutely no clue what he was doing.  He looked like a gassy kangaroo.  There was a gal who was clearly trained and who probably outjumped him by 5 feet, she made it look effortless.

Triple jump and some of the field events should be outlawed.

The bullying narrative is getting a bit more fuel. Trying to kick the kid out of the tented area was already a bit petty, but even more so if it was raining. However, nothing about what the witnesses describe seems to justify the escalation. It may have been self-defense to push back. But nothing about the described encounter would suggest there was an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death to justify escalating with the knife. That said, we've seen assholes with guns get off for pretty much the same thing.

My daughter* was at another area track meet in Carrollton with 3 other Frisco high schools at the time this happened, and it was the talk of the meet obviously. I went Wednesday and wife went Thursday. Thursday was like going to airport after 9/11 she said.
This dumb motherfucker keeping it real. Ruined his life, and fucked up things for everyone else. Having said that, something is off with the Metcalf family. They were giving interviews the day their son/brother was killed.
*No pics.

Agree the interviews seemed strange. Especially the mother urging the twin over to talk to the reporter.

Feels a little bit like the victim’s family is trying to set the narrative and get out ahead of something. I could be wrong. Either way, it’s a shit situation and Karmelo escalated the situation when he pulled a knife.

Disagree, but like much in youth athletics there are issues with lack of trained volunteers/coaches/officials and/or people that care sufficiently about ALL the participants and not just the stars. I will say that watching someone get hit with a discus is rather alarming.

I used to time meets with 3 watches (one around neck, one in each hand) so that everyone (not just placers) had a recorded time so that could log their progress. Some students didn't have or forgot to bring a watch and while some coaches would pull other students over to time the slower runners, a lot didn't bother. When timing chips came on the scene that helped some, but their use isn't universal/widespread at all levels.

Eh, I clipped the rest of your quote because I can't speak to that w/o more knowledge but the part above isn't all that strange as it depends on the circumstances. Set up at some meets is not well organized, some stadiums are small and with inclement weather, not everyone can crowd under the bleachers. Cross country meets are worse for that as they are often held at parks, etc and if it's raining hard, it's quicker to stand in a tent than trek back to the bus or crowd into a teeny shelter. The McNeil Invite had a storm hit at their park during a meet and I thought I was going to need a tow and a new set of clothes before the drive back.

I never understand the jump to give people money in a tragedy but I effectively hate most people and take care of my own. but if others want to give, I don't care.

It’s a step up from thought and prayers. It’s equally worthless but when you can’t actually be bothered to do anything, at least you can feel good about your self righteousness.

Yeah, to me it looks obvious. You’re purposely sitting under the opposing team’s tent with a knife.

I don’t think he was there to help serve orange slices before/after the relay.

I was being a bit hyperbolic, but the fact remains that there aren't as many knowledgeable coaches for some of the more esoteric events.  I had to find some youtube videos to show my son about triple jump basics, there was nobody on staff who knew anything.  It wasn't related to being ignored, he was the team's top scorer, best sprinter and the anchor on the 4x100.  He got plenty of sprint training because the coaches knew those events.

Regarding the topic at hand: I saw kids from different teams hang out togther on a regular basis.  They get to know each other pretty well over the course of a season.

The competing narrative is the deceased and his twin had been bullying the suspect, including breaking his phone weeks beforehand and calling him racial slurs

So if that narrative is accurate it sounds like a young kid being an idiot and taking matters into his own hands instead of getting adults to intervene. In this narrative the suspect intended to make a stand to get the bullies off his back and it all went wrong

But I wouldn’t buy that narrative at face value any more than I’d buy the victims family’s initial narrative at face value

Seems like relatively normal teenage kid shit that took a very unfortunate turn. And since its 2025 a bunch of idiots (on both sides) run to present a caricature of the situation that pushes their preferred political perspective

One of the great shames of a case like this is that a minor is likely to be tried in the adult justice system when this reeks of adolescent bad judgment, which is the underpinning of the juvenile justice system.

When my cousin was murdered by her ex-husband, her mother (who is a crazy bitch and the one that convinced my cousin to maintain regular contact with him for the sake of their child) set up multiple fundraisers in her name with the clear intent of just pocketing a bunch of money. Sadly, people do shit like this all the time.

Nothing but bad decisions all around. But “unbroken string of bad decisions, by people incapable of seeing being themselves” is our national ethos these days, so where’s the surprise?

I haven’t sensed political perspectives in discussing the facts (or speculative facts) from various sources to try and figure out what happened. It definitely wasn’t kid sits in tent, is politely asked to leave, then starts stabbing. The victim being a longtime bully of the perp and the stabbing being revenge makes sense. Sad and tragic all around. The only political tilt was op’s bs source material and its false narrative about the media, then doubling down with an equally terrible inflammatory source with bs “reverse racism” commentary.

Another issue with people under wrong tent is there could be some personals belongings of athletes under there. Again, unless you really knew someone on that team you’re asking for trouble. Being asked to leave at the least.

disagree. If you’re 17 and do something this fucked up, you’re never going to be much use to society. Broken brain, horrific judgment. Likely to do something horrific again.

Two things can be true at the same time:

  1. This is a tremendous loss for the family of the kid who died, so those affected are deserving of sympathy even if the kid was responsible for escalating the situation
  2. There is no need for this to be national news, so we should question the motivations of people trying to artificially inflate its significance at a time when far more impactful things are happening such as extraordinary renditions and a completely self-inflicted economic collapse

My guess is thousands, likely tens of thousands, of idiot teenage boys stab each other every year. In most cases there’s a minor injury, minor punishment, and both young men  go on to mature and live healthy productive lives.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen in this case

I know plenty of people who were violent idiots at age 17 who are now business owners, husbands, fathers, and pillars of their community

17 year old boys are fucking idiots in general. Happily for most of us our mistakes are innocent/minor and we learn from them

I don't know why you guys are trying to reason with GRU. Despite his original post excoriating this board for not discussing certain issues in its six pages, e.g., the tent and knife shit, all of his points have indeed already been discussed.

Y'all are talking to a liar who claims to have already read this entire thread, a troll trying to rabble rouse, or a stupid motherfucker who has the memory of a goldfish.

Put BJ Johnson, the aforementioned GRU, a prick who's been banned from this site 30-something times, on ignore. Please don't engage that asshole.

For the lawyers, could this be manslaughter 2? I'm not sure if the killers team could argue he didn't intentionally try and kill him, seeing it was only one stab. It just happened to connect in the right spot to kill the victim. Not sure the difference in manslaughter 2 vs murder 2 in legalities. Also, doesn't the DA office want to stick with charges with the best chance of sticking?

There's a big split on this whole case and yeah, it's mainly based on race. Frisco is Collin County, which is a good ol boy county for sure. Could his team file a motion to have a change of venue?

I couldn’t find the part where it says he struck him multiple times.

One witness reportedly told police that the victim, Austin Metcalf, had told the suspect, Karmelo Anthony, he would need to move out from under his team's tent, the affidavit stated. Anthony is a student at Centennial High School, but was reportedly sitting under Memorial High School's tent.

Upon telling him this, the witness told police that Anthony opened his bag and reached inside.

"Touch me and see what happens," Anthony told Metcalf, according to a witness.

Metcalf reportedly then touched Anthony, the witness told a responding officer, and Anthony told Metcalf to punch him and see what would happen.

Soon afterward, the witness said, Metcalf reportedly grabbed Anthony to tell him to move. At which point, the affidavit continues, Anthony reportedly pulled out what the witness recalled as a black knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest before running away.

The affidavit shows that another witness interviewed by police told the same story about the altercation occurring inside Memorial High School's tent.

Sounds like complete speculation and even fabrication if the initial report is true that the twins (bully or not) had never seen or interacted with Karmelo (from another h.s.) before they got into an initial verbal and/or physical altercation. Referring to the competing narrative that they systematically bullied him and broke his phone weeks prior, etc.
