I think he meant stand ups.

Robin Williams in his stand up days was tremendous.

Buddy Hackett was also phenomenal.

Others not mentioned here yet, and criminally so: Don Rickels, Sam Kinison, Bob Newhart, Rodney Dangerfield

I'd take any of them over Robert Schimmel, as well as several of those mentioned above.

No love for Phil Hartman?

OMG! NewsRadio…

I had the good fortune to have dinner at his house - and met his wife Brynn.  Phil struck me like Robin Williams in the way that he was still “on” - even without the cameras were not rolling. It’s like he would allow everyone in on the masquerade, but really restrict the amount of people who knew anything about the real him.

Anyway, Phil was a genius.

Robin Williams
George Carlin
Honorable Mention: Bob Newhart

He didn’t have a ton of material or breadth, but his joke about sending uhauls to Africa, and the cameo in Back to School, are two of the funniest bits ever.

You’re lucky to be alive

And we were driving on here a day across the desert, and it occurred to us they wouldn’t be world hunger if you people would live where the food is! You live in a desert, understand that?! You live in a fucking desert!! Nothing grows out of here! Nothing’s going to grow out of here!

I never said I went to sleep at his house.

Bob Hope.

Johnny Carson.

Jack Benny.

That's a lot more modern than I was expecting... no love for Roland the Farter, Dongfang Shuo, or Ogg Rockface?

Quite a lot of really excellent choices here.

I approve of most of them as "Greats".

But the top... Never a doubt: it's Carlin.

My pick is Hedberg, but the also-ran list is strong: Carlin, Norm, Shandling, David Brenner, Rodney

When Steve Martin eventually dies, he will be tops on my list. All-time fave.
