May 17May 17 We watched both last night and some of the scenes are very lol. It’s so clever and funny. Putting Murderbot with a group of cheapskate hippie fuckhappy explorers is brilliant.
May 28May 28 Hoping to start this in the next few days now that The Last of Us is done and Friends and Neighbors is about to be done.
May 29May 29 Never heard of this before stumbling across this thread yesterday. Watched the first two last night. It was OK. Hoping it will pick up steam. The visual style of the cinematography is a bit odd. Can't quite put my finger on what it is but I don't love it. Was fun seeing one of the aunts from Reservoir Dogs as one of the hippies.

May 30May 30 Solid B rating for me right now, but it’s starting to build on the intrigue with the bot and world.
June 20Jun 20 It’s a mess. It’s the typical cool elevator pitch that gets traction and then they gotta write a script.

June 21Jun 21 I already posted it in the Apple thread but I'm loving it, but my expectations weren't high. I'm repeating myself, but its a sci-fi sitcom based on a self aware robot that's on spectrum. It takes shots at both liberal and conservative tropes. It has really good dialog, great internal monolog, and is just silly. I enjoy the hell out of it for what it is.. so. Edited June 21Jun 21 by BurntEyes
July 5Jul 5 I wanted to like this show, ejected after 6 episodes. The plot plodded too long, the characters weren’t like-able. Interesting concept, poorly executed.

July 11Jul 11 Loved the series. Ending closed really strong with a cool "message". Really happy there is a season 2. Look forward to more Murderbot shenanigans. Edited July 11Jul 11 by BurntEyes

I liked this series. It somehow hit the nerd-core, mindless stupidity, subversively silly, and low-key dark aspects of my humor simultaneously. That's a rare feat. Plus, it's got a bit of heart.

I'd add that I really appreciate when "sit-com" is take no prisoners on what silly ideas or tropes they will mock particularly when they are even handed about it. A reason I love South Park.
July 11Jul 11 I think, for some, it will watch better as a binge But I do laugh when I see people get "mad" that they're waiting weekly for a 20-22 minute episode. Like.... same as pre-streaming, with commercials? Back when we watched new episodes each week of The Office or 30 Rock?
July 11Jul 11 I'm on episode 5. I'm enjoying it, but I get what some of you said about not caring about any of the characters. It's basically just easy entertainment while I'm on the exercise bike.

As in situational comedy, episodic in nature. Yes, sitcoms have a plot, but its season long and while a driver for the season not the core focus of a sitcom. Community and Parks and Recreation, for example, always had a season long theme/plot, but was episodic in it's weekly content. Exposition, climax, resolution while moving the season plot along some, but not always in 20 minutes. For example, the season 5 plot of Community was "Save Greendale" but not every episode had to move that plot forward. Edited July 11Jul 11 by BurntEyes

Yeah, I find it frustrating to wait now (spoiled) but at the same time, when I do binge, either because they release a season all at once or I just wait to watch it, I miss the banter with friends the following week (and online) about the latest episode like I used to have with Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc.
July 11Jul 11 Author Quote Added Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, “Chris, Paul, Alexander and the entire Murderbot team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere. We can’t wait to unveil what’s next for Murderbot and, of course, Sanctuary Moon in season two.” https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/murderbot-renewed-season-2-apple-tv-1236311256/
July 14Jul 14 I just finished the last few episodes of S1. Overall I dug it enough to finish the season in its entirety, which isnt the case with most shows I start. Its not mind blowing stuff, but I'll definitely check out the second season. I'm curious how much of the original cast is in the second season, as its my understanding that the second book in the series follows a different story arc mainly.

I didn't mind the vacation from the Mensah team. They're more interesting on TV than in the books.

Yeah the way it ended felt like there might be very limited reference to Mensah team, but not a focus of next season at all. In typical sit-com fashion I anticipate some very infrequent cross reference points to keep them "live" for later engagement but not a substantial part of season 2 in any meaningful way.
July 14Jul 14 I watched MIckey 17 on the plane on way home from vacation. Very similar vibes to this, I thought. Just super goofy with a bunch of people acting ridiculous. Enjoyed both. Neither are stellar.
July 14Jul 14 Murderbot, the tiny books anyway, are a fun diversion with a clever concept. The author puts Murderbot through some interesting experiences where the examination of self awareness is present and, pleasingly, light. You can consider it if you please or just enjoy the ride. The last of the books published so far indicates the writer is sort of stuck. I wonder if she's putting out new material because of demand rather than creative desire. She'll likely have to go deeper to find character development. I love watching the creative process in just about any form. I think I read these soon after finishing The Three Body Problem. Same person recommended the first series and I just discovered the little Murderbot novel(la) on his shelf and loved the idea. A perfect light read and the heavy but enjoyable read of the Chinese author who may just be a genius. I wax. It's been a day of intense concentration, and this conversation is a nice unwinding. @A-Tex Devil, should I check out Micky 17? I know nothing about it. Another fun discovery would be great.

It’s pretty good. It’s probably the worst Bong Joon Ho movie I’ve seen but it’s still entertaining. It’s super zany and dark at the same time. The Ruffalo and Collette portrayals were… a choice.
July 18Jul 18 Finally watched the season finale last night. It was almost like it was a completely different show. At any rate, it was probably the best episode of the series. I'll probably check in on S2 when it comes out to see if it's worth continuing.
