Honestly feels like it's anyone's to take this season. There are favorites, but there are also 5 teams who weren't in last year that are hungry to prove themselves. It's gonna be fun! Who you got?

Great series between two absolute heavyweights. Sucks there had to be a loser. Wish the NHL would scrap divisions and just slot 1-8 like the “old” days.

Round 1 Predictions:

EAST

Battle of Ontario!! Leafs vs Sens: Leafs in 6. Would love to see Ottawa knock them out but I think Toronto has too much top end talent.

Battle of Florida!! Panthers vs Lightning: Lightning in 7. Think Florida’s injuries and back to back Final appearances finally catch up with them.

Caps vs Habs: Canadiens in 7, unfortunately. I think the Caps are entirely overrated and Montreal speed will be too much for this old ass team. As always, fuck the Habs.

Canes vs Devils: Canes in 5. Neither team really has a chance to win the Cup, just filler until both get knocked out.

WEST

Jets vs Blues: Jets in 7. We all know Winnipeg sucks ass in the playoffs but I think they have enough to overcome the Blues.

Stars vs Avs: Avalanche in 6. Dallas has no chance without Heiskanen, and now possibly Robertson. MacKinnon and Makar are too much.

Golden Knights vs Wild: Vegas in 5. The team I’ll be repping for the playoffs (major fuck you to Don Sweeney!). Kaprizov could make it interesting but Minnesota doesn’t have the horses.

Kings vs Oilers: Kings in 7. Oilers are limping into the playoffs and the Kings are unbeatable at home for some reason.

Two games today to get us started!!

Game 1: Jets vs Blues at 6pm EST

Game 1: Avs vs Stars at 8:30pm EST

The Central might be the most stacked division in the NHL. Going to be an absolute bloodbath path to the Western Conference Final for one of these teams.

I am excite! I love this time of year, especially when my team is still playing. when not, still love it

you said, it man. i think the central makes the final this season, just remains to be seen which team

Fun first period. don't think STL plans to get pushed around much. This could be a fun series

@Beau Vine member when you laughed at the Avs for signing Blackwood?

I member.

Hey, I did say he was better than Georgie...
Low bar. Georgie might be out of the NHL next year.

This Carolina/New Jersey series is such a waste of time. Both of these teams have zero chance to win the Stanley Cup. In fact, I think all of the Metro division teams kind of just suck this year.

Though yeah, this year was supposed to be a retool for Carolina while still being a playoff team. Blake emerging as a top 6 forward as a rookie was an unexpected pleasant surprise but the defense isn't there unless Nikishin rotates in and is Pronger level from day one, and Burns all of a sudden returns to his form from 2016.

TBH I expect the Canes to get out of the Metro, but then Tampa probably picks us apart in the ECF.

Just saw a slow mo of Manson's hit on Marchment from last night. Flopping ass bitch.

Nice to see Vegas can blatantly cross-check and not get whistled for a penalty.

you mean the cross check to the face? lol, like Makar's pansy ass didn't dive earlier in the game.

@jetsfan76 How you feeling going into game 2? You think Hellebuyck dials it in tonight because I thought he looked playoff shaken yet again.

Definitely a flop. He’ll get ran eventually.

lol, by who? the avs are one of the smallest teams in the league.

I was NOT impressed with game 1. He's showing the tendencies of playoff Helle of the past 2 years. I'm hoping for 4-0 Jets, but definitely not expecting much.

Just a quick look at their roster, I’d start with Manson, Lingred, Makar, Coyle, Lehkonen, Drury, Kelley, and O’Connor to name a few. Dallas has a reputation around the league as a team that isn’t afraid to sell calls, just look at the video of Marchment nearly giving himself a wicked fucking whiplash from a light cross check to the chest. Don’t act like the Stars are the Big Bad Bruins of the ‘70s either. Stars have one tough guy and he’s a liability against speed and skill and he’s a dinosaur.

I’m a Vegas guy this playoffs (fuck Sweeney). Pulling for Cassidy to get his second cup.

LOL.  Fitting.

Who the fuck do you want me to root for? The Bruins fucking suck and will continue to suck for probably the next 5 years. I refuse to root for anyone in the East and I barely give a shit about any team out West. I like that Vegas is the perceived bad boys and I fucking wish Cassidy was still behind our bench in Boston.

and none of those guys are substantially bigger than Marchment. there are plenty of players in the league who have tried to run him without success. that's fine, focus on him, will leave Duchene and Seguin open. and I will admit the dive if you admit Makar's "trip" at the beginning of the game was baby shit soft too. it's the playoffs, some calls will be warranted and others won't. complaining about it makes you look like you don't follow the game closely. lastly, I'm not claiming shit about the toughness of the team, just one player, and I'm not even sure I'd call him tough, just big and able to take shit from others. our identity as a bashing team left a while ago. we traded that for skill. hopefully that skill shows up and shows out tonight

The trip on Makar was absolutely weak, too. No denying that. But if you don’t think Makar and MacKinnon will get more calls then you’re out the lunch. But fucking Marchment should absolutely not get that call. He’s basically a nobody in this league. If bubble boy continues to flop, he’s going to get his ass ran. I don’t make the fucking rules guy.

Yeah, Manson dropped Benn like a sack of potatoes a couple years ago.  I'm sure he's up to the job. Bonus for Beau Vine that he gets his favorite announcers on this call.

dude, a nobody? he missed 20 games due to a broken face and had he played a full season he was on a 30 goal pace before injury and maintained that after rehab (22/62 is 29/82 if meted out over a full season). in my fantasy league he is listed as top 172 player overall (which translates to top 6 forward), and 71st in stats per game - only MacKinnon, Makar, and Necas were ahead of him in that same rankings on the Avs. just admit you don't know shit about the Stars and move on. you're clowning yourself otherwise.

I said Manson is up to the job of taking care of Marchment if it comes down to it. Probably won't happen, though.

I just added the Benn clip because I love that clip.

you mean like he did with the cross check to the face in the video above? and miss me on that wasn't to the face. it was neck/head area, which is the definition of a high stick. anyway, if that's Manson's solution for Marchment the Avs will only be playing with fire

Lol. The slow mo shows it did not touch his face. Just watch the video I posted. He's a known flopper. He's been fined for it in the past.

it doesn't fucking matter. that it a penalty, whether he embellished it or not. the stick is above the shoulders, it's a fucking penalty. cry about the aftermath if you want, but that was a good call. others weren't. get the fuck over it. lol

He hit him in the collarbone area.  Definitely not above the shoulders. But enjoy your moral victory, I guess?

I mean, you admitted he took a dive up in this thread.

so anyway, back to actual hockey discussion: since Bednar is being a wiener and not giving lineups before the game, any idea if Colton comes back for this one? If not, who slots in for him? Vesey?

I'm rooting for Winnipeg and Minnesota.  I have a lot of family in/from Manitoba, and they just fucking bleed for that team.  But they'll shit the bed cause that's what they do in the playoffs.

Lots of friends are Wild fans.  I came of age during that period where the was no team in Minnesota, so I became a default Chicago fan.  I kinda tried to get into the Wild when they started, and they had that great run in 2003, but it just never stuck.  I do generally like to see them do well, and usually root for Minneapolis based pro sports.  The Wild just aren't as good as Vegas, and Minnesota pro sports choke on apple sauce.

Of the actual contenders, I'd be cool with Ovi getting another Cup.  I'd like to see Auston Matthews get one too, but the Leafs flaming out is never not funny.

He’s literally never scored 30 goals in a season. You can talk hypos all day but he isn’t a star in the league to warrant flop calls, especially when compared to Makar.

Colton sounds like he's out for sure tonight. And Landeskog has been activated from IR.

Ok, then don’t come in here bitching when he gets ran or takes a cross check in the ribs. He’s got it coming to him.

that last part was true last game, no? otherwise he could not have been sent down to the AHL, right? - although admittedly conditioning assignments aren't my area of knowledge. will be interesting to see if he slots in. want a complete lineup so there's no excuses later

I dont' know.  I do know that the Avs tweeted out about 30 min ago that he's been activated off IR.  I don't know the ins and outs of how that works.

Makar does not dive.  It was a soft call, though (on the first trip, not the second one).

Makar is the guy that tells a ref that a trip was not a trip (actually happened).  Marchment is the guy who has been fined by the league for embellishment.

  • Author

and fine, you want clarification I think your brain can understand so hopefully you'll drop it? Manson committed a penalty and Marchment oversold it. the second doesn't negate the first. if they had called embellishment on Marchment fine, but the penalty to Manson still stands. but they didn't. so get the fuck over it. hallelujah, holy shit

And MacKinnon is 1 of probably only 2 guys in the entire league that gets to call his own penalties when nobody in stripes see it happen live.   Don't understand why an Avs fan of all people is bitching about refs when everyone knows you're going to get the benefit of calls 9 times out of 10 against anyone you play.  I'll freely admit Marchment's bullshit (taking bad penalties and diving at times) is annoying and his rep costs us and him  but that was a penalty whether or not he oversold it.  Not sure what you are arguing about.

Lol.  Are you claiming MacKinnon didn't take a high stick to the face that bloodied his nose? Rules allow officials to review if it's for a double minor, just not for a 2 minute minor. That one was by the book.

Absolutely ZERO chance play is stopped to review if that were the Stars or really anyone but 29.  No official saw it at all.  I'm not sure what it looked like on TV but it was bizarre from the arena.  If that happens to anyone else the ref shrugs, says he didn't see it, and it's just another missed call (that happens all the time).
