Love that but that play probably works maybe 1 out of 100 times.

That's what makes it a highlight play. Far from his best play today, though. He did really, really well today.

Pretty sure he was concussed  before that play.

coach and players singing his praises tonight on news (leadership, moxie, has made a really good pre-season impression, etc)... but he may still get cut by Tuesday if Broncos don't keep three qbs. but, like...three deep at qb seems like a good idea, no?? 🤨

It's borderline. Plenty of teams keep 2 on the active roster and stash 1 more on the practice squad. Sounds like that's what's going to happen with Sam.

Sam didn’t make the roster. He was last person cut.

The QB2 for Denver is pretty good so maybe he wouldn’t have ever gotten on the field. Maybe some team with a shitty backup will claim him off waiver.

He’s gonna wind up in Miami isn’t he?

Wait why on Earth would he turn down a 53-man spot?

Clearly I don't know, but my guess would be that (1) he likes the situation there, (2) they are going to pay him a decent amount of money to stick around, (3) his pension is already vested so he doesn't have to worry about making a roster quite as much. Everyone that he's played for has commented on how smart he is and how well he understands X's and O's - could be that they like him in the room as an extra coach. Kind of like Keenum's role at Chicago this season.

And/or maybe Cami Jo just doesn't feel like moving again.

Not a great business decision..... Two 20 something's in front of him and Sitdham had a great offseason to be their backup.  I don't think there is an expectation to become more than a backup but it appears he may have had a market to be just that and get some 2-3 job security.  Now, he has to wait for an injury.  Denver's a cool city to hang and I'm going to guess Denver paid him way more than a reg PS player.

I'm going to take a wild guess that you don't have all the facts to make such a judgement.

The $1.3 million wasn't fully guaranteed. Now that he's been cut, he'll make about $20k per week while on the practice squad with no other guarantees or bonuses.

It's a bit of an unusual decision, but it's obvious from watching him in the preseason that he's nowhere near ready to actually play in the NFL. He probably believes he'll receive the best coaching with Denver and is betting on himself to develop more in Denver than the 2 teams that offered him 53-man spots.

He also wouldn't have gotten much job security from those 53-man offers. His offer was likely a vet minimum with no guarantees beyond this year.

"Sam is a guy that we want back,'' Payton said after Tuesday's practice. "Now the league a few years back put in a rule that allowed you to dress a third (quarterback for games), but he had to be on your active roster. Every team in this league when the season starts is going to have three in the building. The question is just simply 'what's the third in the building? Is he active or practice squad?'''

Practice squad rules say two players can be elevated from the practice squad for each game during a season. A player can be elevated to the active roster for games three times during the season, but then have to be signed to the active roster.

Again, I don't think this is about Sam being a starting QB in the league, that window is probably gone by now, it's etching out a career as a backup.  Denver has 2 guys under 30 signed until 27' on the roster.  Stidham was the first QB Payton signed when he got to Denver and they just paid up the ass for him to come back and be the backup - 2/12 with 7 guaranteed.  Denver like most teams has decided to only carry 2 QBs, so there's no real place for Sam to ascend unless his plan is to be 3rd QB and make less money shuttling between the active roster and PS for the next 2 years.

While the other 2 teams probably didn't offer much more than the vet minimum for this year (still way more than what he's making now), but we can surmise they probably have ab unsettled backup position and Sam would have had the opportunity to work towards capturing the #2 position, which is the catbird seat for guys like Colt and Chase Daniel to make tons of money although they never really had to play all that much.  I think that's Sam's ceiling at this point.... a good next 7-8 years as a #2 making 2-5m a season as a vet backup who's steady when called upon but ultimately, good in the QB room and always prepared.  There's no immediate opportunity in Denver for this and if rumors are correct and Stidham has comfortably accepted his own role as #2 in the league and likes it, then he probably sticks with Denver as long as they're fair with him.  Where does that leave Sam?

I have lived in Denver within the last 7 years and surviving on $20K/week there is totally doable.

Yep.

Practice squad players make $13,000 per week or $234,000 for 18 weeks. Veteran players with over two years of experience make a minimum of $17,500 per week or $315,000 for 18 weeks, and a maximum of $25,000 per week or $450,000 for 18 weeks.

The minimum salary in the NFL for the 2025 season is $840,000 for a rookie, increasing with each credited season of service to $1,255,000 for players with 7+ years of experience.

2025 NFL Minimum Salaries by Credited Seasons

  • 0 seasons: $840,000 (Rookies)
  • 1 season: $960,000
  • 2 seasons: $1,030,000
  • 3 seasons: $1,100,000
  • 4-6 seasons: $1,170,000
  • 7+ seasons: $1,255,000

This is Sam's fifth season, so his minimum salary is $1,170,000. That's prorated to $65,000/week while he is on the active roster instead of around $20,000/week on practice squad.

I think he's on the Broncos.  At least practice squad.  I'm not sure how it works if another team wants you from someone else's practice squad.

It does seem weird that the Colts feel like their best option is the 44 year old who hasn't played in many years.

Yes, he's on the Broncos practice squad, so they could sign him; but it would have to be to their 53-man roster and he gets a minimum of three game checks.

Seems he's been bouncing up and down:  (At least according to AI):

Here's a summary of his typical weekly status:
  • Early Season (Weeks 1-6): On the active roster, designated as inactive (QB3) for game days as the emergency quarterback.
  • Late October (Week 7/8): Briefly released from the active roster to create a spot for a returning player (LB Dre Greenlaw), then re-signed to the practice squad, but later promoted back to active for a few weeks.
  • Late October/Early November (Weeks 9+): Returned to the practice squad, with his status depending on roster needs (elevated when needed, then returned).

So, the Colts, had they wanted to, could have signed him (not directed at you @TheAuditor, just stating what could have happened).

$1.2M will last a couple of years. Maybe 3 if you live in CA.

At this point in his career that seems like a good move.  He's not likely to ever be much beyond an emergency starter, so he could pull a Colt and get a healthy 8-12 years in the league, decent pay and his pension.  Go sell commercial real estate next.

Also fuck them he already was there and they took the starting role away from him for no reason.

You gonna sic Nicole on them?

Broncos coach Sean Payton has built quite a culture and coaching staff in Denver over the last three years.

Payton has helped the Broncos return to their old winning ways, and players are bought in. A perfect example is third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger turning down a spot on the Indianapolis Colts' 53-man roster to instead remain on Denver's practice squad.

"Listen, we spent time with him and we're glad he's here," Payton said after Friday's practice when asked about Ehlinger's decision. "We're glad he's staying. We think a lot of him -- a lot. He's been a real good surprise for all of us, especially offensively when we see and watch him. He made that decision and that's a big deal."

Payton said it was a credit to the team, the quarterback room and QBs coach Davis Webb that Ehlinger does not want to leave, even for a promotion elsewhere.

This marks the second time this year that Ehlinger has turned down a 53-man roster spot elsewhere to remain on Denver's practice squad. He has opted to continue serving as QB3 behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham.

And they threw him a bone this week.

Quote

Additionally, Denver elevated wide receiver Michael Bandy and quarterback Sam Ehlinger from the practice squad for Sunday's game against the Packers.

----

Ehlinger, who has spent time on the Broncos' active roster this year, has been elevated for the first time this year.

He’s been activated this year and is activated for the first time this season? Am I reading that right?
