The issue is what 'quality' means for Texas, Georgia, Michigan...etc.

There's really only about 60 quality OL in cfb total by our standard. Getting 8-9 of those guys seems like a fool's errand.

Then in 98 or so AAS 360 Or something like that was the site we all used, but dial up made it super hard to navigate page to page as the pop ups killed the experience.

That was before 1998. I am relatively sure I was on there in 1996.

The AAS Fab 55 was a good list back in the day. I used to pore over it.

I listened to a lot of 590 AM and 1300 AM. Jeff Ward and Bill Schoening had a good sports talk show before Craig Way came to Austin.

(Damned site was dragging)

Fuck me for contributing to the thread derail.

The college football transition to the internet age was awesome. There was a recruit whose bio in the annual Athlon season preview magazine mentioned that he was in the Huckleberry Top 75 which was just a terribly formatted page I had on Hornfans that was a weighted composite of top Texas recruit lists.

Obviously I should sue 247 for IP infringement.

Eh...if you weren't posting post-practice reports on Prodigy as soon as you got back to your apartment, you're to young to be claiming to be old....

You don’t know old unless you remember trying to glean anything you could from the AAS in the 80’s or listening to Garvin on Fox Sports Southwest.

austin.general was one of the big usenet forums for Longhorns sports.

Here's what you would call a 'post-game thread' after we beat A&M in 1995 to win the final SWC Championship. Lots of furious Aggie fans complaining about the UT fans who ran onto Kyle Field after the win.

Besides the pick itself, I enjoyed the sight of Texas #35 running Pullig's ass over in his excitement to congratulate Carter on the sideline.

Back in the day the Dallas Morning news was the main recruiting source. You waited all January for the back page article. They had 3 lists: National , Regional and State. Our horns rarely had a National kid. Lovell pinkney was the 1st big one as I recall.

Later it was all magazines. Prep Sports America was hosted by Chris Fowler and came on Saturday mornings. If you were lucky , your school would get mentioned as having a shot at big time HS recruit. Back then (80’s) it was notre dame , Miami , fsu getting all the big names.

Later you could subscribe to a Fax. Basically a news letter once a day.

Then in 98 or so AAS 360 Or something like that was the site we all used, but dial up made it super hard to navigate page to page as the pop ups killed the experience.

Then horn fans came and the likes of HPSlugga, rpongett and billinsinton

My experience tracks with this. And I liked HPSlugga and rpongett, but how could you leave out horndfl? He was one of my favorite posters there, and here (under a different name, of course).

Does anyone have more background on that student being beat up by Corp around 1995. I have a friend that transferred out of A&M as a freshman. I didn't know him when he was at A&M. A few years after knowing him a mutual friend said in passing the reason he left is he got beat up by corp turds for walking on the grass. That and he was way too unique of an individual to ever enjoy aggyland. This would have been around 1994/95. Either it happens a lot or its a small world.

I was introduced to hornfans by a coworker in January ‘99, giving me the opportunity to be around for the Simms announcement crashing the site.

If I recall, that was also the last time Texas had “quality depth” on the OL. So I choose not to worry now. The o-line has been interesting from Nunez’s Dancing Bears all the way up to Flood’s Bumbling Giants.

I think many players will find out that the scholarship is worth a LOT….food, housing, tutoring, tuition, books, monthly stipend, other support not available to normal students…..so, staying on the team, working your ass off and being dedicated to a great school, just might find you starting….ask Taffe.

Oops…forgot about one of the most important reason for staying….girls like jocks.

Well, for now at least, the current/recent developments seem to indicate most players don't play no school.

Which is why I find it funny they talk about classes starting as if that's some big factor in portal signings.

Can the NCAA even enforce academic eligibility anymore? Or did Kavanaugh trash that too?

Can Raiola still transfer? Oregon if I remember correctly is on quarters and has not started class yet… but Oregon is going to kill him on $$

Someone needs to dig up the old newspaper article that had a recap of an aTm basketall game/player and and article right next to it saying something about "Abuse suspected in School for the retarded." I know someone has it. Pretty sure the aggie basketball player in the pic was Acie Law.

does NLI even come into play with transfers ? my assumption from some of these scenarios these kids mostly hop in and out of the portal freely

Wouldn't you think Oregon doesn't want to pay them both?

I don't know why phrased it like that: Isn't it possible that this is a surprise to Oregon and now they don't want to pay Raiola as well?

One thing that I do truly miss about the old days was going to the first Freshman practice. So you could see for yourself if the kids passed the eyeball test compared to the hype, and just to see the incoming freshmen as a group before joining with the rest of the team. And... parking was free and I think entry was free as well. And tailgate spots were free (with the occasional near territorial fisticuffs) and Mack's teeth were white!

I think the thread is super interested in a thought exercise on exactly how, soup to nuts from ground up, BurntOrange&White, aka Blumpkinator Dong, would build his college football roster form the ground up. Lets say with Texas's resources. Go ahead, lay it all out for us. Number of kids per year recruited out of HS, the # of stars for each of those kids, number of roster spots overall, number of roster spots assigned to each position, expected player churn and portal retention each year, average salary of each position, # of scholarship players, number of PAID scholarship players, go on, lay it all out for us, guy who has it all figured out. Lets say your Total Budget is 50 million dollars a year. Come on, show us all how Texas should be doing it.

We all know you're incapable, unwilling, and likely both, to actually take the time to lay out a position and defend it. Especially when it requires thought, time, and effort. But prove me wrong, chooch. Show us you're not a one trick pony that exists entirely to wail and moan on the internet as an unintentional billboard of the failures of public education.

I really, really hope that "portal horror porn kink" catches on and has staying power.

It's not so much the hive mind as it's that you're too stupid to realize that you're not smart, you have bad takes. But instead of listening and reading what other people post, maybe learn and consider different opinions and topics on the subject, you just instead embody the endless confidence that comes with the stupid and shout and scream your opinions to anyone that will listen. Rarely right, always certain.

I did all that. And after I did that I saw basically sark agreed with what I was saying and went light on high school, heavy on portal stars and paid for way less than people thought.

I’d tune it down from 85 to 65 and I’d probably only pay pay 35 or 40, but what he’s doing is imminently rational and makes complete sense.

Should Texas be interested in players that are just now entering the portal? Does it show a lack of conviction?

Should Texas sign players that Texas tampered with to get into the portal in the first place? Once a cheater, always a cheater?

I'm glad you're proud of yourself. But, of course, that was literally in no way whatsoever the point of my post. And more importantly, who that post was directed at...
I'm accusing a poster of eating paint chips and you're walking into the middle of the exchange going "I've eaten paint chips, and let me tell you, they are in fact toxic"
We know what's happening and why, bud. The point is the shrieking harpie with a neck-beard who won't shut the fuck up.

This doesn't make sense.

Every time a player enters the portal it opens up a roster spot...

presumably most every player that enters the portal would also free up a scholarship as well.

I love how you look at it and think, "oh a picture of an A&M player next to a giant title about a school for the retarded, what a funny coincidence". But then when you start to read the article you realize when it says "Lubbock facility" that it's actually about Texas Tech.
