I'm guessing he was one of the visitors that they absolutely did not want being disclosed anywhere until the deal was done. This dude must have gotten to ATM and thought:

Bah has to be going to A&M, right?

Let's just put it this way: If he signs with UT, he and the rest of the team will need to refrain from saying his name during the A&M game in order to avoid mass incidences of attempted "animal husbandry."

@Katfid54 saw him on his visit but thought he was Colin Simmons.

I'm not looking into all that. I'm happy for us though, or sorry this happened.

But but but I thought we were no longer taking development guys if they cost too much. And if he didn’t cost so much, then why didn’t he stay at A&M? It can only be because he sucks, or he discovered what A&M is all about. I’m guessing the latter.

Newman played seven snaps this year in garbage time. He can play guard or tackle. Probably bread, but at this point the pantry could do with some re-stocking.

Played 7 snaps this season against Samford, backfilling some depth for next season. Will likely be right back in the portal in 2027.

He's not costing much and Texas was interested in him last cycle when chose ATM. Dude apparently didn't like it there.

Snap count for a true freshman isn't really important. We needed bodies on the OL and Newman had an offer from us last cycle. So it's depth for now that's not a reach.

So he's a pretty smart young man, bodes well for development potential. Probably was misled living in Cypress by the heavy Aggie contingent around here. We Longhorns aren't loud enough, plus he came from Weigman's school so there was recent history.

Heading into this season, one of the big lamentations about the roster was that Flood hadn't taken enough OTs in the last few classes. I am not being critical of that take with this post, just pointing out that had Texas initially signed Newman, there wouldn't have been as much whining when Cojoe went down. Now Texas lands him and no one seems to give a shit and generally just assumes he'll vanish into the portal next cycle. Maybe that's the case, or maybe they still want to develop key roles inside of the org rather than just rely solely on the portal to fill needs when guys graduate or move on.

One thing is likely - Texas won't have to push him to take a big pay cut after next season. They're starting low, so if they see development they like, he can certainly get a raise without having to bail. I feel like someone else is going to get that same trade with a few of the guys we didn't want to leave like Brooks and UK with Barnes.

He was a low 4 star HS recruit, but with a very high ceiling. I think he looks like a mid to mid high 4 star on high school film. I think the frame + athleticism makes Goosby a legitimate comp.

It's a great take since, apparently, he didn't cost a ton of money.

So if I read your post correctly it sounds like Brooks and Barnes probably signed elsewhere for not much more money than Texas offered? So was it about playing time, or just hurt feelings?

Eh, I was just making the portal joke because generally, it’s going to be a pretty good bet going forward when a guy transfers after his freshman year he probably has one or two more transfers in him when it’s all said and done. But I also haven’t been all over this thread pissing my pants that we don’t have future nfl all pros up and down the OL two-deep.

I think he’s a solid pickup for next season depth and it could be a really valuable pickup down the line. Or we cut bait with no real opportunity cost. Exactly what we should be doing and I assume we have more of the like on the way.

Agree, this is a quality add. I don't know if he will be ready to contribute next season, but he is more likely to appreciate a place that he enjoys going to school and may not be so quick to jump back into the portal. We still need two or three high quality guys that will make an impact next season.

They sign with the second school for less money than it took to sign them out of high school. Same as we are doing with players like Newman.

#12796

This also likely means we are going to take four offensive linemen in the portal, right? They still want to add two starters it sounds like.

#12797

Holy shit, I didn’t even know he was in the portal. That’s a huge get. They loved this guy out of HS and his teammate who went to OU. This is an upgrade on Nick Brooks.

Not gonna make a big difference this year, but definitely a solid option down the line.
