Eric Nahlin: Read This if You're Nervous About Texas Addressing Its Biggest Portal Need

By most accounts, Texas has had a good portal recruiting window thus far. So good, in fact, Texas has become a bit of a meme as the program starts to show signs of what it’s always been accused of — being greedy. Texas already had a good wide receiver with still more promise, yet added the best player in the portal, wide receiver Cam Coleman (Auburn). Texas signed one of the best running backs in the portal, Raleek Brown (Arizona State), then doubled back to flip Hollywood Smothers (North Carolina State) from Alabama.

Texas already had a number of quality cover athletes on campus, yet still went for Bo Mascoe (Rutgers), one of the best corners on the market. Now, Texas has perhaps the top offensive tackle in the country for 2027 in Trevor Goosby, yet is still recruiting Jordan Seaton (Colorado), a player also highly regarded for the 2027 NFL Draft. Thus far we’ve seen one need addressed after another. They needed a blocking tight end, so they added Mike Masunas (Michigan State). They needed a giant nose tackle and added the biggest one they could find (Ian Geffrard).

Nearly everywhere you look, needs are being met. Early on, when even fans with demonstrated backbone were beginning to waver, I discussed the importance of the staff’s approach at each position. Good processes typically yield good results, etc. Insight into those processes offered me a sense of calm which I tried to pass on to the IT community. Reviews were mixed. We lost some real s***** soldiers along the way. They’ve probably already re-enlisted under new names.

As predicted, great results started to roll in. It turns out there was never anything wrong with their original process, other than perhaps being overly aggressive.

That brings us to the offensive line — the position that many will (justifiably) use to determine portal success. As pointed out many times before, the staff has taken the complete opposite approach to portal recruiting in the past. It could not be more obvious that they are aiming high. That comes with a tad bit of risk, but it also sets a relatively high floor. There are only so many players, after all, who can rebuff the overtures of the comprehensive Texas pitch. It’s the same pitch that applies to other positions.

The process and planning is so good that all their eggs are not in the Seaton basket. They’re definitely interested, but not desperate. Desperation with two days to go in the portal entry period would be the sign of a bad process. Recently I’ve been saying two things:

“Nobody can predict what the 2026 offensive line will look like.”

And:

“The plan at O-line is as grand as it is at other positions.”

Both remain true, and as the results eventually roll in, you’ll see the plan to address the roster was uniform across the board — which should already be obvious.

That's some classic stuff right there. "I had it the whole way" smug superiority, comparing message board posting to being a solider, insulting his paying user base. I think he nailed the hat trick.

With the exception of whatever the “he’s an old hippie” song is titled, the Bellamy Brothers were very clear about every other song they produced - each song was designed to get them as much pussy as quickly as possible. I assume it worked.

Nakos non-update on Seaton

Colorado OL Jordan Seaton

While Seaton has yet to officially enter the transfer portal, Oregon and Texas remain two of the top schools to keep attention on in this recruitment. Sources have also told On3 that Colorado is working to keep Seaton in Boulder, too.

That is not the trio of suitors I’d expect for the top OL in the portal. Maybe he’s setting his expectations low.

He doesn't seem valued by the big players. Perfect for depth, maybe?

(Eric Nahlin) Texas Football Portal Window Nears Close: OL Targets, Visits, and Key Dates

For every school other than Indiana and Miami, the window for entering the portal closes Friday, but that doesn’t mean schools will be done signing players. Quite the contrary — we’ll likely be following signings well into the spring. The last day to enroll at Texas for the spring semester is January 28. After tomorrow, that’s the most important date to know. The portal will open for five days for both Indiana and Miami after their game on the 19th.

No matter what happens tomorrow, Texas will still evaluate the players currently in the portal and also weigh grad-transfer options. Don’t be surprised by a couple of grad-transfer additions after the spring semester. Much more important for the 2026 Longhorns is how these next two days shake out vis-à-vis options to pursue, especially on the O-line. Here’s where we’re at:

Tomorrow will be a big day in the pursuit of Jordan Seaton (Colorado). Texas has the wherewithal to compete on the financial side, but it’s to be determined how Seaton will view playing with Trevor Goosby — one of his rivals for OT1 in the 2027 NFL Draft. Adding Jonte Newman (A&M) on Wednesday helps with depth. He has enough talent to become a potential starter down the line. For reference, On3 has Newman slotted one spot below former five-star Ty Haywood.

Texas is also supposed to host OT Mason Barton (Jackson State) on Thursday. He’s another player who wouldn’t help a ton in 2026, but the needs extend beyond next year. Today you’ll likely see a development that would help raise the floor further on the O-line for 2026. In addition to that, we’re still tracking a couple of potential entrants who have the ability to take any O-line portal class to another level. If the right pieces enter, I predict everything else will fall into place. In the meantime, the staff is making contingencies.

We have had secret visitors every day for the past 10 days.

As a matter of fact, we had secret visitors from other teams many times during the season on their off days. It’s a parade of secret visitors. We also have secret analysts and staffers that handle the secret visitors. It’s an entire shadow operation. And they should be secretly fired for their poor secret evaluations and secret close rate.

A subscriber on Horns 247 posted the note below. Ketch said Seaton wasn't in the portal as of 7:00 AM this morning, so the subscriber may have misheard whatever Hogan was saying ... who knows.

Would certainly be a visitor we would want to keep “secret.”

#12989

Is there a downside to entering the portal for a player like Seaton? Why not just go ahead and enter even if hes seriously considering staying at CU?

If you’re going to post shit like this, at least let us know what the rest of the tour schedule looks like. I’m assuming it’s only on a flyer from the show and not anywhere online.
