Flood was telling people in August that he thought the best combination for the starting 5 was Goosby-Hutson-Robertson-Campbell-Baker. He was worried about losing Hutson at C for the line calls, but he thought that Umeozulu was going to get Manning killed and/or rack up a bunch of dumb penalties.

Next thing I knew, there was word from camp that Connor Stroh had surpassed Neto and was looking good at LG. That is when all of our antennae went up on this board and the collective head was scratched.

My theory is that he convinced himself, somehow, that Stroh was a better Guard than Robertson was a Center. Stroh was one of his guys and he really wanted that to work out.

On the one hand, I'm encouraged that the guy knew what his best starting 5 was. On the other hand, that hope is snuffed out by the fact that he chose, instead, to play the worst Guard in UT history, and he did so long enough to ensure that Texas was going to be unlikely to make the playoffs.

Ban the recruitment of any OL 6'6+,350 lb+ so Coach SizeQueen doesn't fall in love unless there is outside verification that they have freakishly quick feet.

Stroh’s game against Florida might be the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a UT player. It’s up there with Swoopes vs Arkansas and some Garrrett Gilbert games. Not counting the 2009 B12 title game vs Nebraska as that was a collective o-line effort.

Chris Hall was a) better than any guard we had on the roster outside of Campbell last year and b) 50 lbs lighter than Stroh

Some programs have begun splitting up tackles and IOL into two different position groups with their own coaches the same way edge and IDL are split now. I believe Cal just did this. I doubt we will explore that avenue but I do think it will become increasingly popular in the future with coaching caps removed. Flood is hardly alone in being specifically good at only one aspect of his position.

I shudder to think what Ndamukong Suh would've done to our interior line last year. It wouldn't have been safe for TV.

Rolling out a line of Goosby, Sikorski, Robertson, Baker, and Brooks against Ohio State is certainly a bold strategy.

Weren’t you just crowing about the shitty Ohio State OL? You seem to know your stuff. I’m sure him getting ass raped by his former teammates would be a fun watch.

Miami is about to play for a national championship because they lean on a very good OL down the stretch. Would be great to have that especially if we want to make a deep playoff run.

I didn't really tune in until the fourth quarter and after I saw @HenryJames's comment on James Brockermeyer missing two blocks in the first drive or so (and the subsequent "fuck the Brocks!" pile on), but the center/guards were beating the crap out of the front and second level of the Ole Miss D. Worth nothing is that each of them is in their 4th or 5th year in college.

They even had mongoloid flamingo boy Carson Beck (average career run of 1.6 y/p/c) running for an 11 year gain, prompting Herbstreit and Fowler to praise his athleticism(!).

O line actually did improve as the season went on. I think talent recognition is his biggest issue. Having to coach up spares is tough. And he keeps picking spares.

Agree with this, too. He's just not a good evaluator past the obvious "can't miss" guys and possibly uses size as a crutch, but he's not Warehime bad. I also think he/his position group has the most to gain with the increased number of scholarship, a position that oftentimes rewards and experience over talent, and the inherent advantage of a UT to pull in the Rice level offensive line prospect that's a candidate to play here in year 3 or 4 in a best case, stash them for later scenario.

Which brings up the next important point. Kids aren't leaving their current team's benches to come ride the pine on our bench. It's likely why the Yale kid went to Oregon, they have immediate need at both OTs. We don't, we have the likely #1 2027 NFL LT coming back and have 2-3 guys we'd be comfortable with at RT, depending on development and injury recovery. Bennett ain't coming here with the chance to compete for a starting job when Oregon is likely guaranteeing him a starting job and equal/more NIL.

So we should have been focusing on guards and not tackles? I'd agree with that. They'd be cheaper too.

It's very possible that internal options at guard are better than anything available in the portal. I'm generally of the opinion that this board is over-obsessed with needing 22 starters coming off of all-conference years. Talented high school recruits with a year or two in the program should develop into good players when given a chance. I'm just nervous specifically about the ability to develop and evaluate interior OL after what we rolled out last year.

Is Flood a good teacher? I'm not sure the results would have been that different if you replaced Flood with an average coach. 2024 was his high-water mark - Texas was one of the best pass blocking teams in the country and okay at run blocking. That was with 5 NFL-caliber linemen with a ton of experience playing together. (Banks, Williams, and Conner were drafted, Majors is on Philly's practice squad, and DJ Campbell will get drafted this year). Flood looks like a good coach when he has talented juniors and seniors. And he looks like shit with Stroh. But so would lots of guys.

Seems to be much more of an interior line issue. Goosby was a 3 star Flood (presumably) identified, recruited and developed into a potential 1st round pick. Cam Williams was also a 3 star (obviously different circumstances there - everyone was after him and Cristobal and pancake factory saved the day). He didn't recruit Christian Jones, but Jones' improvement was nothing short of miraculous in his one year under Flood. I think Brooks has a lot of promise. He's even done decent with lower ranked interior players like Connor, Hutson and Robertson. None of those guys turned into All Americans, but all had decent careers compared to their ranking. Neto and Cruz were obviously big misses, and the story is yet to be written on some of the other underclassman.

I don't think a unit that peels off about 5 false start penalties a game is indicative of being well taught.

We want good competition, but we could easily roll out Goosby, Sikorski, Robertson, Baker, and Brooks next season and be fine. That would be returning 4 guys that started games last year for Texas. We have upgraded every skill position room from last year. which would make the OL job easier especially with the homerun hitting backs we added in Brown and Smothers. You want the running game to be better add elite speed to the position and watch the OL become competent again.

To be blunt, a starting lineup of Goosby-Sikorski-Robertson-Baker-Brooks isn't winning us a national title. This isn't a criticism of Flood, just the reality of the importance of actual experience.

Nick Brooks is a true sophomore. His 'experience' consists of just three starts + action in two other games, where he was hastily thrown into a completely different position (LG) and predictably put up performances ranging from mediocre to downright ghastly. Presumably he'll turn out to be good down the road as Flood has a strong track record with tackles, but next year we need a starter at RT who's much, much closer to reaching his peak.

Sikorski is a redshirt sophomore. His experience consists of just six starts + action in four other games, after moving back-and-forth between OL and DL. I haven't watched his Oregon State performances but @Huckleberry has and IIRC he wasn't especially impressed. Probably further along his development curve than Brooks, but many of the same issues are there. This is Arch's final year and having a starting RT and a starting LG who are still learning on the job would be an unforced error by the staff.

The stubborn bullshit with Stroh should have been enough to get Flood fired. Sark should not have a coach on the staff that isn’t dedicated to playing winning football ahead of everything else. It was obvious after our preseason slate of games Stroh needed to be replaced. Instead we got the Florida debacle.

The entire experience was flat out wild. Suh and that DL had been good all year, but they went fucking nuts in that game. I knew all year that the OL was the biggest weakness on the team, but that game made them look like high schoolers. Yet, there we were, the #3 team in the country and just needed a win to go to the Rose Bowl.

I don’t remember which idiot WR had two steps on a defender only to drop what would have been a touchdown pass, but that added to the drama. Then McCoy holds the ball too long and almost blows the whole game-winning drive. Shawn Watson walks over when Nebraska thinks they won and is visibly talking shit to McCoy and Texas. Then they put one second back on the clock and Mack the Kicker Whisperer does his thing with Lawrence or whoever it was at the time.

Last game I took my dad to before he was too frail to handle the stadium walks. Thought he was having a heart attack on the final offensive play before the FG. The whole time I just kept thinking, “but this is Nebraska. there’s no way they’re winning this game, right?” and sure enough, they didn’t. The bitching about one second will never get old for me. Fuck those gasbags and I hope they’re enjoying college football hell.

It was all him. There was zero pressure from elsewhere to play Stroh or whoever he wanted. I think it was UTEP where he not only got pimpslapped silly on a play but also then took out two other OLs and the RB was left for dead? Whichever game that was, that clip went viral to the point it made its way into the program as a joke from the outside. There were open questions about why the guy was still playing. Then they insisted upon themselves and played him against UF anyway.

I was told the playing favorites shit with Stroh went so far as to them lying about him being hurt rather than admitting they just benched his ass. I don’t know if I believe that because it just sounds too unbelievable, but the older I get, the more I see things I couldn’t bring myself to believe actually come to fruition.

I derived a great deal of humor out of watching @Red Five act dumbfounded repeatedly during the season regarding Neto going from being a starter in the spring and summer to being like 4th string and almost never playing while Connor Stroh was actively buttfucking the entire offense. Whatever transgression Neto created in Flood’s mind remains a mystery. Maybe the guy slept with someone in Flood’s family or something.

You definitely have a point! I think when looking at a broader benchmark compared to the output of OL coaches across the country that are viewed as good to great along with the resources Texas has to be able to be able to land 5 NFL caliber talent he has underperformed. I think my lens was a bit more narrow (comparing to OL coaches we’ve had in the past which some have been Stroh level awful) which in hindsight you’re right we should be expecting more results!

I tried to build up my own internal enthusiasm for the Strong hire when it was made. I was happy for the change but a skeptic of his as a HC. Then there was talk of him being given a blank check to get whatever OC he needed. 2-3 weeks go by and it is obvious that the guy wasn’t even speaking to candidates. Then Shawn Watson was hired.

I was done from that day forward. Watching people try to justify it and then go so far as to defend that rube was some of the only entertainment I could derive. The “Shawn Watson Has Overhauled the Offense” campaign after the first season, heading towards South Bend out of the summer was the ripest these boards have ever been for trolling.

I had people climbing over each other on 247 to tell me what a fucking idiot and asshole I was any time I’d run the guy and their logic over. The Notre Dame beatdown was humiliating, but mocking large swaths of 247 posters repeatedly from that game through the next year was a small silver lining. I haven’t been on that site and posting in a decade and there is still a faction of coach lovers over there who still absolutely despise me.
