Cool. I was getting worried for a minute that there wasn't going to be something else for this thread to melt down about.

We were getting dangerously close to a point where this place wasn't a personification of a loaded diaper that I'm unflappably certain some significant percentage of you cunts sport.

I’m chillin. We really don’t have a choice but to get several guys in so excited to see how that happens.

With where we are currently at in the portal calendar, the best hope seems to be getting 2 contributors and 1 depth type piece.

Anything more than that and you are likely taking dudes who were horrible last year or have very little game experience.

These comments raised a question for me.

If Brooks hadn't played at Texas last year and was at some comparable school, would we be trying to recruit him from the portal? On the one hand, I think he's a good player who was put in a bad position this season. But on the other hand, there are a lot of red flags. I don't think I would view him differently from the rest of run-of-the-mill OL currently in the portal.

the IT chart looks juicy sweet compared to this which lays out bare bones the situation

995er quote from brooks' camp about why?

The On3 write up made sure to remind everyone of the high caliber of player we are losing.

According to Pro Football Focus, Brooks had an offensive grade of 36.6, a pass blocking grade of 17.1, and a run blocking grade of 46.5 across 221 snaps. He committed four penalties.

I played LT back in 1979 and still have all my college eligibility. I can probably put on about 40 lbs of good weight to go with my current 40 lbs of bad weight and am happy moving to guard and being depth for cheap. So, hit me up Sark!

#12259

This is one of two things. 1) a leverage play on the part of Brooks to see if the coaches actually want him at the price he thinks he should get 2) the coaches told him that they can't allocate resources on him as a developmental prospect, perhaps because they know something we don't with regards to whom they have on the way

He was put in a terrible position but looked awful in the snaps he did receive. A weird situation. Texas is in critical need of OL depth but it's insane to think they would have to commit resources to keep Brooks after how he looked this year. I guess that's the new reality of the portal and especially for OL.

That's more or less where I'm at.

Losing Brooks sucks because he's OL and we need OL, not because there was anything special about Brooks. He's replacement level and it's fine to lose him, as long as we actually do bring in a replacement.

5 september 2015

strong's 2nd season

OC and Oline coach: joe wickline

combined number of starts on the OL: 39

total offense: 103 yards passing, 60 yards rushing

final score: 38-3

+++

what is the total number of combined starts that we could run out right now if the spring game was tomorrow?

would it be more than 39?

a weaponized arch isn't going to do fuckall if he's not alive

cdc should be waterboarding everyone for this fuckup every morning

the beatings should continue until morale improves

There have been some doozy mental evals by Flood lately (Payton Kirkland, Daniel Cruz, Nick Brooks) that we invested quite a bit of time and effort into, which only compounds the other issues we are facing like the smaller HS classes we've taken along the OL the last few years.

Brooks is our 5th OL to enter the portal, that's fine in a vacuum, it wasn't a good OL room anyway. But it does make the decision to bring so few OL in for visits that first week look even more ridiculous.

I think it was way too early to know one way or another how Brooks would turn out. He has rare athleticism for his size. But he also looked like it was the first time he'd played the sport 95% of the time he was out there.

OL in the portal era going to be very interesting to follow. Obviously we had already fucked the position up so we aren't the best case study but ideally you have players come and sit and develop for 2 years before being expected to contribute. That is one position you might be willing to pay to develop to some extent. But if your 2nd year player that isn't ready can get starter snaps and money at a middling Big 12 school, do you just never develop depth and pay juniors and seniors with experience year after year?

One thing that seems to be true of damn near every contending team at multiple positions is that injury luck is going to play a major part in results in any given year. Significantly more than it has historically.

Obviously money talks but Brooks leaving is odd from both sides. Texas needs quality depth this year and someone who can play OT next year. Brooks looked so bad this year that his market can't be that hot. Not sure where he would find a better situation.

One thing for sure though - Texas needs to find more OL targets than just Seaton. That's going to be highly competitive and even if you get him, you probably need another OG or two for depth.

Funny you say that but he actually wasn't, at least initially. I get random high quality info at times and the Texas evaluation of Ojo going into junior day was definitely not to the "can't miss 5 star" level he was rated by the recruiting services. Maybe that changed over time as it was a bit dated when I saw the eval. At the time I thought Flood knew what he was doing so we probably dodged a bullet when he committed to Tech (at least at that crazy price point). Then as I watched our OL shit itself, I thought back to that evaluation and then assumed Ojo will be a day 1 All American in Lubbock. Didn't follow Ojo after he committed to Tech so no idea what current expectations are for him or how his SR film looked.

Seems like a really weird decision to portal from Brooks. He needs a lot of coaching and development

Any program that would take him to play immediately would be a shitty one

It will look less ridiculous when we take two O-Linemen each from Indiana, Miami, and Ohio State.

This is the grim, unspoken truth of the portal thus far, even for teams that look to be elite: No matter how many positions now are manned by solid starters, there's no margin for injury on offense or defense. Nor, for defensive guys, is there as much margin for overcoming targeting DQs. If you think it's been tough to piece together an adequate lineup when a key guy or two is out, try doing it with zero experience on the bench. Next year will be a true war of attrition in CFB.

I expect a response like this is getting posted about pretty much every freshman portal entrant from peer programs.

I don’t have anything new to add besides I hope he’s back. He was THE recruit last year for Flood and Georgia and playing him over guys like Neto and Kibble likely hastened their departure.

Indiana seems to be a case study in why you just hire juniors and senior to play a grown ass man's game. We don't have time for developmentals to burn baby fat and get their head right.

Also, a young man I mentor plays DL for CU and he says Seaton is worth every penny million he gets.

(Eric Nahlin) Status Check: A Look at Texas' O-Line as Portal Crunch-Time Nears

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral occurred in October of 1881, just two years before your favorite university was established. At the time of the gunfight, people likely thought the West would only become more wild. That didn’t happen, of course — law and order slowly adapted to resemble our current times rather than devolving into pure barbarism. This portal window sure feels like a gunfight where even well-heeled schools are struggling to find cover. Texas has been winged a time or two, but nothing life-threatening. We won’t know for a couple of years how bad the loss of Nick Brooks is for the roster, but right now it seems less than ideal.

However, as we all know, the staff is all-in on 2026, and if that’s the case, resource allocation necessarily follows. You can’t save bullets when you’re already in a firefight. Whether the sport evolves toward law and order or further devolves into barbarism, I have no idea, but Texas remains better suited for survival than most. I’d watch Alabama for Nick Brooks, but I’m sure other schools will push for him. Here’s their quandary: can they (or wherever he ends up) afford the carrying costs of having him on the roster and not playing him? Also, can they afford to play him if he isn’t ready? Let’s take a look at the Texas O-line roster after Townsend’s departure.

OL Room Snapshot (Post-Townsend)

C — Connor Robertson (SR) — Potential starter. Could also play guard in a pinch.

C/OG — Jackson Christian (RS-FR) — Potential starter in 2027. Could factor at OG this season.

OT — Trevor Goosby (JR) — Starter. We know the deal here.

OT — Brandon Baker (JR) — Starter. Could play right tackle or guard.

OT — Jaydon Chatman (JR) — Should be expected to provide depth in 2026. Has shown some promise. Could potentially get a look at guard.

OT — Andre Cojoe (JR) — Total unknown coming off knee injury.

OT — Jordan Coleman (RS-FR) — Has shown promise but, outside of perhaps depth, not ready in 2026.

OT — John Turntine (FR) — Needs to add weight before discussing playing time.

OT — Kaden Scherer (FR) — Developmental player.

OG — Dylan Sikorski (SO) — Should be good depth this year at minimum.

OG — Devin Coleman (RS-FR) — Has shown promise but not ready in 2026.

OG — Nic Robertson (FR) — Of course one of the guys they really need to be an early enrollee isn’t.

If Texas had to play tomorrow, the line would be:

Goosby — Sikorski — Robertson — Chatman(?) — Baker

If Texas lands Jordan Seaton, the line would be:

Goosby — Sikorski — Robertson — Baker — Seaton

That’s moderately better but still not ideal at G-C-G, and there’s almost zero depth to speak of.

That’s a handy status check. Let’s reconvene as events warrant.

this bavarian fire drill for trench competence is insane

excellence and transcendence are not even in the conversation

we were told we had a #1 roster

no one mentioned an o-line of ASSWATER

now, simply to make the water drinkable, we need a comprehensive multi-year recruiting and retention plan for offensive linemen

3-year nil contracts, scholarships for 9 academic semester, use 'em when you want as long a you don't portal

negotiated 1-year extensions based on market

every year, program entry slots for 1 center, 2 for guards, 2 for tackles

portaling requires 100% buyout of all NiL monies paid less incentives for academic performance

this idea it's dead cap money makes no sense to me

the south bend game 10 years ago was the low point of the trajectory mack started

we had it fixed with guys sark didn't bring in

and here we are again, 1 or 2 injuries away from ASSWATER
