We didn't get to do our snow vacation last year, so now we're trying for December. We'll have about 30 days off and want someplace that's not a douchefuck influencer resort like vail. The quality of skiing is not as important and finding a nice private house with trees and snow. Where would you go?

What about Steamboat? I love that mountain and flying into Hayden is pretty damn easy.

We're taking dogs and driving.

Yeah, Steamboat isn’t going to work in that situation. I’m also a big fan of Wolf Creek for skiing and Pagosa Springs has some cool places. If you’re driving, it’s just about the closest to Texas as you can get. The downside is that Wolf Creek is about 25 miles from Pagosa Springs. Another good option if you’re driving would be Durango. It’s a great town.

Fuck, yeah. Big Sky is on another level.

Renting a house in Breck for a whole month will be pretty expensive. You should consider the Beaver Creek/Avon area. Less crowded, easy access to Vail if needed.

Other option is Crested Butte.

Agreed on Pagosa. Sounds like a good option here.

Granby Ranch 100 times out of 100 for me. Quiet, but can be in Winter Park in 15 minutes if you want. Can ski both places with ease.

Crested Butte is awesome. Went during covid summer 2020 and eating outside on a closed main street as the sun went down is a lifetime memory.

Stay in Estes Park and ski at Eldora?  Estes is kind of a ghost town in the winter (compared to the summer).  Eldora isn't as awesome as Steamboat or the areas on the other side of the mountains but it would do in a pinch.

Closest Colorado ski destination is Wolf Creek. You can rent a place in Pagosa Springs or South Fork. PS has more and better restaurants, shopping and city shit.

Crested butte doesn't fit anymore cuz it's Vail douche whatever.

I would have recommended it had it been the before times.

to be fair, for this crowd, it might be the correct kind of douche. it is an Austin-type douche.

I've heard good things about it, but it's a 50 hour round trip drive, and if I'm gonna drive that far I'd just keep going on up to Whistler.

Sure, because Whistler's only another 25 hours on that round trip.

It would be more of a discovery trip for my girlfriend; she has never been anywhere N/NW of Taos.

I mean, nothing you said makes sense and I said it was a long drive, but worth it if you are staying a while - if you are just going for 5 days it's insane, if you are going for 15 it's pretty easy to justify if you are going for 21+ the drive is hardly even a factor. Also it is nowhere even close to comparing the drive to whistler, which is a completely bogus comparison.

Crested Butte is nowhere near what it used to be pre-covid and hardly recognizable to the mid 2010s or early 2000s. It's still a cool place, and I lived there for a while, but it's Vail + Aspen type vibes now.

I'm not sure what it is you are after, but if you are looking for chill ski resorts you pretty much have to go somewhere not accessible by the front range pass holders and not on the Icon or EPIC pass.

I would ordinarily steer folks away from Granby Ranch but in this case it could be a good fit.

San Juan River Village is about halfway between town and Wolf Creek + on the river with Mountain View’s.

Not gonna be much to do there, nor places to eat.
