Power outage hits large parts of Spain and Portugal

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/large-parts-spain-portugal-hit-by-power-outage-2025-04-28/

MADRID/LISBON, April 28 (Reuters) - Spain and Portugal were hit by a widespread power outage on Monday that paralysed public transport, caused large traffic jams and delayed flights.
Utility operators sought to restore the grid but Spanish electricity transmission operator Red Eléctrica said the outage, the cause of which was not immediately known, could last from six to 10 hours. Officials said the possibility that it was caused by a cyber attack had not been ruled out.

Not that bad. I'm in Marbella. Old ladies buying all the bread. I could only order cold tapas and you have to pay cash. Beer is getting a little warm.I need to write a strongly worded letter to the Red Electrical company.

Traffic circles everywhere are the norm so traffic is ok. Worst part is internet went down at 1230 and it's just now coming back (it's 545pm now). No TV. The German school near me went to all day recess so the kids were being loud all afternoon and screaming about invading Poland and shit.

They said it was heat related but only got up to about 75 today here. I had no idea this was kind of a big deal until I tried to go down the mountain where I live to eat and the internet came back on and I saw this thread. I just thought my neighborhood went out.  Oh, no ice cream at the supermarket, they taped everything shut.

Am in Tavira (southeastern Portugal), power went out about 11:30 am local and came back on about 45 minutes ago. Tavira is chill; some restaurants stayed open until it got too dark in the kitchens; other than that everyone just sat around outside drinking beer and wine (can't let it go bad, ya know). Local loja (bodega) run by Indian dudes had candles everywhere and a big sack of money to make change. As I mentioned, Tavira is pretty chill. Whole town cheered when the power came back on.

So it was a Monday as usual in Southern Europe.

True fact.  Tomato Europe, generally not operating as smoothly as potato Europe.  Generally better grub, though.

And crawfish Louisiana does not operate as smoothly as lobster Maine.

Despite all of my city’s misgivings, this quote from a gentleman living in New Orleans in the 1870s is as accurate an assessment of my opinion and feelings as I could write.

Quote
Times are not good here. The city is crumbling into ashes. It has been buried under taxes and frauds and maladministrations so that it has become a study for archaeologists...but it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes than to own the whole state of Ohio.
Lafcadio Hearn

Kinda  like what JFK said about Washington DC. A city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm.

Daylight licked me into shape
I must've been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone, alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me

Tell me you've never spent much time in Tennessee or West Virginia without telling me you've never spent much time in Tennessee and West Virginia. While we do have mountain mamas and moon shine, the Shenandoah runs east.

I'm in Central Tennessee where I belong.

Took until this morning to get my internet back up on the mountain. Guess the cell sites lost their minds.

Here in Central Madrid it didn't pop back on until 11:30 last night.

My phone didn't work a lick all of yesterday, but it's back up and running fine. I had to eat goldfish and maria cookies for lunch because the whole apartment only had 5 euros in it.

Public radio broadcasts yesterday were worthless, as they didn't know anything, but the rumors at the plaza were that it was for sure a cyber attack.

Biggest plus is when we went out this morning to walk to school all the trash that had piled up over the last 10 days of trash workers being on strike was miraculously picked up.
