Introducing Premium Lite: Watch your favorite creators ad-free

YouTube Premium and Premium Lite tier plan pricing chart

We’ve been testing Premium Lite to make sure we have the right balance of features and benefits for those viewers who want to watch most videos ad-free - whether it’s gaming, comedy, cooking or learning. For users who want ad-free music on YouTube and YouTube Music, plus offline and background play, we recommend the Premium plan.

OK, lets cut through the bullshit. If you don't use Youtube Music you don't need Premium. Premium Lite is still ad free videos like Premium but $6 cheaper.

Also you have to sign up using the phone app. For some reason it won't let you use desktop.

I would switch. Don't use it for music and I've rarely downloaded anything.

I already have. I almost never use YouTube Music. Ads wouldn't bother me there. I never DL anything.

I have to applaud YouTube for making their product so addictive and such a truly horrible experience (with ads), that people feel like they have virtually no choice but to pay for the exact same content that they can get for free just to keep the last remnants of their sanity.

I bet you still pay to watch ads on cable channels.

You're paying for convenience and to not be bothered by ads. If that's worth $8 a month to you then great.

Oh, for sure. And it probably is for me...because they've slowly, and likely purposefully, made the experience so dreadful over the past year or two.

except with linear tv you can dvr the content and skip the ads

and the linear model does not yet require 3 minutes of ads for every 5 minutes of content like i've been experiencing on hulu for the last week

Ads are just an excuse to take a piss.  $2.95 per month for Hulu and $8.95 for Netflix is worth my minute or two of time to fiddle around on my phone.

Is there a decent free or lower-cost android alternative to YT Music? I enjoy the ease and convenience of using it, but I'm trying to lower my monthly subscriptions to a million services.
