May 5May 5 Surly Peeps.....I'll be in Houston for a family event and I need to find some food rec's for myself. I'm stying at the Zaza Museum District and these all appear to be walking distance. https://bodegastacoshop.com/menu : any good? saw these BBQ joints: https://www.citadelbbq.com/menu https://www.brookstreetbbq.com/dine-in-takeout-menu/ https://thepitroombbq.com/main/ I may also hit up Trill Burger
May 5May 5 Do you have a car? For the love of god dont go to Citadel bbq (they boil their shit) or brookstreet (trash) If you are stay at Zaza and dont mind walking Le Jardinier is one of the best restaurants in the city and close. Lucilles is great, as is Mo Betta Brews for veggy options. MF sushi also fantastic
May 5May 5 Pit Room is good (my personal favorite in town), Brookstreet is not. Never heard of Citadel Would be a pretty walk through South Hampton. Take a walk down South Blvd for pic opps with the trees/ mansions etc..

May 5May 5 Zaza has complimentary car service within a 3 mile radius. Also, there is a rail station right by the hotel as well, just don't ride it late at night unless you enjoy the company of drunk homeless people.
May 5May 5 As others have mentioned, MF Sushi, Le Jardinier and Lucille’s are the play within walking distance of the Zaza. Use Zaza’s house car to venture over to Montrose or Rice Village for more options. I lived at the Zaza for nearly a year while I was commuting from Arizona and, I can’t stress this enough, do not bother eating in their hotel restaurant.

It could be great, but I’ve avoided it just based on the fact that everything that has been in that space has failed. I realize that’s not a rational reason to avoid trying a place.

It’s one of my go-to places to take people in from out of town and people always rave about it. That said, I have a friend that I have a standing weekly lunch with and we agree on restaurants 99.9% of the time and Le Jardinier is the one outlier for her. Unpopular opinion: I think Kata is overrated.

I don’t know of citadel or bodega. Brookstreet isn’t very good. There’s also Loro on Kirby, which I haven’t been to but I think Aaron Franklin is involved with that.
May 6May 6 Feels like it’s been covered pretty well but avoid the bbq you listed, just uber to truth or Pinkertons if you don’t have a car and want great bbq. Pit room is good but Pinkertons/Truth are great, IMO. Betelgeuse Betelgeuse is nearby and although I haven’t been I hear they have good pizza.

May 6May 6 Seconded on Lucille’s. I would unfriend whomever gave you those bbq recommendations. If you’re carless, Pinkerton’s and Truth will require an Uber. I’d take full advantage of the car service. You should be able to go most places in the Montrose, West U/Rice Village/Museum District. Clark’s is a really nice/cozy dining room for oysters. Women seem to love the place. Hermann Park is very underrated. It’s the best park in Houston by a fairly large margin in my opinion. If you catch some nice it’s worth a long stroll.
May 6May 6 My daughter and I took the dogs for a long walk in Hermann Park last Tuesday to see the Great Elephant Migration before it left town. We all had a great time.
May 6May 6 Author settling on Pinkertons (is it crazy on a Friday for lunch?), Truth or PitRoom will def try Botega for breakfast tacos due to proximity. I'm in with the family (wife, no pix, and two 7YO's) so it;s all about me getting some Texas food. maybe Betelgeuse for Pizza for my boy who is a pizza eting machine. Thx for the help. 5 minutes ago, Ghost of NMAS said: My daughter and I took the dogs for a long walk in Hermann Park last Tuesday to see the Great Elephant Migration before it left town. May 6May 6 I really like the Houston Zoo, and I think it’s one of the better zoos in the country. They’ve made a lot of improvements over the last few years. My daughter and I go pretty often, and I maintain a membership so we can go for free. Parking and crowds can be a problem when schools are out though. You make a reservation and buy tickets online now. Edited May 6May 6 by Ghost of NMAS

THX Bodega Tocos is fine for like a, late night after drinking taco night. I haven't eaten their breakfast tacos. But I mean, it's on par with eating a Freebird's or Mission Burrito type place. Not saying it's bad, just that it's not special. All of your BBQ spots suck balls. As others have said, Pinkerton's or Truth. And Pinkerton's line moves pretty fast even on Fridays in my extensive experience. Truth, not so much. And yes, The Pit Room is not great and certainly isn't top 3 Houston BBQ, much less top 3 Houston. Sorry not sorry Putt. ZaZa car service will take you to Rice Village, which has plenty of good food options. Helen Greek & Wine, Hamsa, Navy Blue, Hungary's, even fucking Island Grill has good food. Cafe Rabelais, and then middle of the road stuff like Torchy's or Black Walnut. Sixy Vines. If you can get a bit further, you can get the Campechana at Good Company Seafood.

May 7May 7 Museum District resident here: Nonno's on Richmond over Betelgeuse for pizza, but Rosie Canonball is right around the corner and maybe superior for ambiance Italian: DaMarco on Westheimer or Amore on Sherpherd Burgers: Trill is popular but Burger Joint should not be overlooked and ambiance wise is better Little's Oyster Bar on Shepherd

What in the ever living fuck have you ever found redeeming there? I keep trying to like it because it’s the closest burger place to my house, but every burger I’ve ever had there has been under seasoned and dry. It’s to the point that I only order it off of Uber Eats because I’m drunk at 3a and I somehow forget how shitty it is and then wake up regretting not ordering a patty melt from Whataburger.
May 7May 7 LOL I also only found Burger Joint mostly appealing late night. And it is still faster than the late-night drive thru at WB.

How's the Zoo? considering it for Friday Went to Pinkerton’s for lunch on a Friday two weeks ago. Line was 30-45 minutes. It was out to the end of the front awning if you know the building. I had a brisket sandwich and it was OK. Nanner puddin slapped.

If you were ordering fast food at 3am, and you can still wake up and feel disappointed at what you ordered and ate, then you clearly weren't drunk enough.
May 7May 7 Another Montrose/Museum District resident here... If you're getting a burger in the area, the correct answer is Toasted Coconut. And I agree with Nonno's for pizza, especially with the kids as they have some arcade games. A lot of the suggestions in this thread are not kid friendly (DaMarco, Amore, La Jardinier, MF Sushi) Candente is great for TexMex close by. Just get to Pinkerton's or Pit Room early-ish and you should be fine. Truth will probably take too long to wait.

May 10May 10 Haywire is pretty nice. Food is good too. Reminds me of Berg’s The Ranch at the HLSR, but it’s open all year. Maybe a must for yankee visitors.
