Wife and I have been in Italy for a week. Venice then Florence and arrived Rome via Siena earlier today. Plan on waking up early and walking from our hotel and seeing how close we can get to his first mass, I’m guessing not close but it’s surprisingly not very crowded here yet. We were expecting a lot more people around. In talking to locals they seem pretty meh on the choice. I’ll post whatever pictures we can get tomorrow.

ive never been to Italy before and this trip was planned about 6 months ago so the timing is amazing and a once in a lifetime chance to see a small part of history.

What do you think of the food on this, your first trip to Italy?

Have you tried any gelato yet? I’ve heard that it is slightly better than “mid”.

Food has ranged from really good to outstanding. Wine even better than that. No gelato yet, we get plenty of that in Costa Rica but will definitely try some at some point before we leave. From here we go on a small ship cruise up the coast of Italy and France on over to Barcelona. Overall it’s been a great trip and we are already planning our return for next April when it’s a little less crowded. Florence and Venice were packed.

I had been in Buenos Aires over a month before I finally tried the ice cream at another foreigner’s urging.

I didn’t eat ice cream that often in Los Angeles (where I had been living for 8 1/2 years)… but HOLY SHIT!

The same can be said for Italy!

You should be comparing and contrasting gelato several times a week.

Do not wait until right before you leave. Try some gelato today!

We were able to get about halfway inside the square to see Leo at noon. We got there later than we wanted but it worked out because by the time he started speaking people were lined out way outside the actual square. Really, really cool to be there even though I didn’t understand a thing he said. My Italian needs some work. He did mention Dallas, TX for some reason and that seemed to be the only reference he made to the United States. Internet here is shit but I will try to post more when I have better service.

I wonder how many, if any, are still bitter than Italians no longer have essentially exclusive rights to the papacy. I mean it's been a while but I'm genuinely curious if there's still some lingering resentment.

The US is broadly covered worldwide, you don't need to understand maga specifically for people to read about him being a complete asshole and really fucking stupid, and the majority of US voters elected him twice, so we deserve all that comes with that unfortunatly. However, even setting that aside, American's have a reputation around the world, there's a whole thread on this forum about asshole American tourists. The stereotype posted above (fat fuck with Bud Light and a gun) has to be pretty prevalent. I myself cringed a little when they announced it was an American, but reading about him, I think he might actually help our reputation around the world. I think people will also come around when they find out he spent most of his career in Peru and has dual citizenship.

Leo firmly stood on the side of Ukraine while calling for a just and lasting peace and then called for children to be returned.  His first call was with Zelenskyy of any world leader.

Found the translation. Also to be a forthcoming Papal Bull:

"In the spirit of hope, and to provide relief to those unfortunate souls suffering under the tyranny of the evil one, we pray and ask for God's divine assistance in exorcising the demon in Dallas Texas that is known as Jerry Jones.

"Exorcizo te, immunde spiritus, in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti, ut exeas, et recedas ab hoc famulo.

[cue increasingly dramatic organ music and a faint baby's cry]

"In nomine Patris, et Filii, , et Spiritus Sancti."

Then Jerry Jones may or may not get ambushed while getting a massage in Vegas.

TBD

Finally found the translation and it turns out the reference to Dallas isn’t interesting. He might as well have called out the two of us from Port Aransas or maybe just said “muledick”. It’s been an incredible trip so far due to timing that was pure luck. After the pope we have managed to hit Monaco as they are staging for next weekend’s F1 race and then traveled over to Cannes film festival. Cruise has been on a small ship (Windstar line) and has hit some really cool places between Italy and France. We arrive Barcelona in 2 days which is probably what I’m looking forward to most.

so far Portofino Italy has been our favorite stop on the cruise.Absolutely stunning scenery and the locals all got a kick out of our boat name.

Gambling? Questionable.  Beer? C’mon.  These are Catholics.

One of the interesting parts of Wisconsin life is the prevalence of summertime "polka Masses" during the fundraising-carnival season. A polka Mass is usually held in the beer tent, which is always the biggest one if there are several tents. And the only tent if there's just one. Hymns with a polka beat, and beer's waiting when Mass is over.
