A bit of earnestness I’m sure I’ll regret. I am not a Catholic, I am a believer. I do not think that the pope is infallible, even when speaking ex cathedra.  The Catholic Church, like every insti

They say a man's character can be gauged by those who call him an enemy.  If that's true, I like this guy even more.

I'll probably disagree with him on some things, and that's great.  I need my views challenged.

There's a small, cackling minority of haters.  He's gonna come to the US at some point, and say Mass at Soldier Field and similar.  Gonna be wild.  Can't wait.

Small minority? You mean half the damn country. If he hasn’t yet the second dear leader sees what Leo has said in the past and rage tweets about it he’ll be the new Catholic anti-Christ. Wouldn’t be surprised if they try and revoke his citizenship and prevent him from visiting the US.

I wish we'd stop saying this. It's not even half the voters in the country, much less half the country. They're just loud.

Same. I held my breath when they said, “Robertum”. I like his books and social media, but, TBH, I’m not sure about his administrative skills. My only memory from his time at CDW was him telling my bishop to issue something under his own imprimatur because of the intentional logjam in his dicastery.

This is about the pope, not the poop.  It’s all poop in this fucking reality.

He was Argentine.  If you know anything about Argentina, it's that they're Italians who speak Spanish.  Something like 89% of all people from Buenos Aires have some Italian blood, and that only gets moderated to about 75% on a national scale.  They definitely don't call themselves "Italian-Argentine."

Fun fact: this is will be the first pope since Adrian IV in the 1100s who speaks English as a native language. Adrian (Nicholas Breakspear) would have spoken a Middle English dialect that you couldn’t really understand if spoken and would barely be able to decipher if written in a modern script.

Also, Medieval English Norse-inflected names are so freaking cool. Almost American Indian level cool.

Eh, the vast bulk of Southern Cone Italians and Germans and Europeans pre-date fascism. It’s easy to forget that for centuries the educated European elites viewed South America and even Mexico as the smart bet on an up and comer, not the United States. Argentina was one of the wealthiest countries in the world and attracted lots of European immigrants.

Well, now that sweep of the stros makes sense. The freaking POPE was praying against em. They never had a chance.

Depending on where he was from he could have still been speaking old, or Anglo-Saxon, English.  Since he ended up being Pope it's a good bet he picked up Norman French along the way also.

He studied in France so he for sure knew it and likely the Anglo Norman version.
