I don’t think there’s been any uptick in fatal plane crashes, this stuff has always happened. The only out of the ordinary thing that has happened is the DC collision.
May 22May 22 And air traffic control systems completely shitting the bed for 20 minutes at a time in congested air spaces. That's a new one.

While it may feel cathartic to blame this on Elmo, and he didn't help, this is basically decades of neglect building up in our air traffic system. It started back when Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers and it's been enshittening ever since. Airspace infrastructure is not a sexy sell, so it's easy for one administration to pass the buck to another and so on. That's likely a completely separate issue from what caused this particular aircraft incident. When a plane crashes, we look to mechanical or pilot issues. If a plane crashes into another plane, that's more likely an air control issue. No controller ever says "aim it at the ground."

May 22May 22 General aviation planes crash literally everyday, and fatalities have been falling over time. This has nothing to do with anything.
May 22May 22 Reddit puled up the LiveATC archive for 1030z, which is 0330 local. The poster says you can hear a call for a 3mi final at 14:15 of the link but I can't hear anything, even after downloading. https://archive.liveatc.net/kmyf/KSAN-KMYF-Twr-Both-May-22-2025-1030Z.mp3 https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=a8cadf&lat=32.803&lon=-117.053&zoom=12.2&showTrace=2025-05-22&trackLabels×tamp=1747910803

This year, there have been 1,415 aviation accidents, including 257 fatal incidents, with 306 reported deaths. As of May 22, 2025, there have been 23 plane crashes in the United States in 2025, according to the Aviation Safety Network. This includes 159 deaths in 48 U.S. aviation incidents, according to FOX 9. The NTSB has logged 250 aviation incidents and accidents across the United States from January 1 to April 24, 2025, including 182 airplane-exclusive incidents and accidents, with approximately 215 being fatal. Additionally, at least two people were confirmed dead and eight others injured after a small plane crashed in a San Diego neighborhood on Thursday morning, according to ABC News.

May 22May 22 I fell into the general aviation youtube wormhole during covid, so I, bizarrely enough, follow it closely. There are literally fatal crashes every day or so and they rarely make more than the local news. This is nothing new. Our culture is so poisoned at this point that it has to be Biden or Trump's fault somehow. This was very likely pilot error in bad weather.

May 22May 22 A bit of a weird sentiment... I hate that this happened in a military housing neighborhood, but I'm glad this happened in a neighborhood with a lot of folks who are trained in emergency response.

May 22May 22 It's sudden-onset spatial disorientation, brought on by the Covid-19 vaccines and covered up by the MSM. Real talk this looked like they were on a pretty normal approach for landing, no distress calls, plane just goes down a couple miles short. Some talk that it may have hit power lines but that might not necessarily be the root cause (if it hit power lines, then it was already too damn low). Maybe just flying too low trying to get a visual on the runway, in completely fogged in conditions. The Blancolirio channel has the initial rundown:
May 22May 22 sounds like descent below minimums in foggy weather, should have gone around, didn't, hit terrain, people died. no politics, just general poor judgement.
May 23May 23 "Doesn't sound great but we'll give it a try." Maybe some GetThere-itis, a dose of falling behind the aircraft, and a little sprinkling of spatial disorientation. You can hear him try to turn the lights up on the runway right before the crash. Everything seemed normal until it wasn't.

Quote A private plane clipped power lines before crashing into a home early Thursday in San Diego, killing the co-founder of a music talent agency and two of its employees and igniting cars in a neighborhood of U.S. Navy-owned housing. The Sound Talent Group said co-founder Dave Shapiro died in the crash. He is listed as the plane’s owner and has a pilot’s license, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The talent agency did not provide the names of the other employees. At least 100 residents were moved to a nearby elementary school serving as an evacuation center, the San Diego Police Department said. The plane was headed from New Jersey to San Diego after a fueling stop in Kansas. It crashed about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from San Diego’s Montgomery-Gibbs Executive airport. Quote The Sound Talent Group, co-founded by Shapiro, has represented artists including American pop band Hanson, American singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton, and Canadian rock group Sum 41. One thing unites all men. Deep down we are all certain that if we are on an airliner and the pilots are passed out or dead, we are the best choice to stay calm and collected and land that sucker with a little help from the tower. The really hard part is going to be keeping the pretty stewardess calm.

May 23May 23 Fair enough. I’d still like to know time in type, and I look forward to the preliminary report. Flight instructors aren’t immune to making bad decisions under complacency.
May 23May 23 My grandkid has a friend that lives in one of those weird gated communities where everyone has a hangar and there are these little planes that taxi along the street and you have to stop at stop signs for them to pass you. It's very strange. The homes are pretty basic but I guess because you have a huge glorified barn on yoru property and a hobby plane, every house is like a minimum $3mm. I go to that neighborhood to carpool for school or birthday parties or what have you and I think to myself it's the riskiest and most insane thing a lawyer-by-day or run of the mill orthodontist could ever do. It feels like not a matter of when but if, but maybe I'm just a big baby and/or too poor to understand.
May 23May 23 Just heard about this, he was a big booking agent in the punk/hardcore/etc scene. Bummer.
