Look at this guy who needs help from the tower to land an airliner. Looks like somebody didn't play enough Microsoft Flight Simulator as a kid.

We all have to admit our limits. Just like in the other scenario where I am the best hope for the plane:  I hope I can nod at another unassuming yet secretly deadly dad across the aisle before we move as one to effortlessly eliminate the hijackers using a plastic coffee stirrer and a laptop I grabbed from a sexy brunette in a business suit and messy bun as brilliantly improvised weapons. But I’ll do it on my own if I need to meet the occasion.

One thing unites all men.  Deep down we are all certain that if we are on an airliner and the pilots are passed out or dead, we are the best choice to stay calm and collected and land that sucker with a little help from the tower.

This is Surly and I'm pretty sure based on the dietary habits of most members, y'all don't have to worry about landing the plane--you're going to die of dysentery. The pilot in California crashed because he was in a hurry to get the cinchoa to the Inca king.

sounds like descent below minimums in foggy weather, should have gone around, didn't, hit terrain, people died.  no politics, just general poor judgement.

Happens every day

Yep, nothing political about this at all.

...unless the pilot happens to be black or a female. Then it's DEI at work.

My grandkid has a friend that lives in one of those weird gated communities where everyone has a hangar and there are these little planes that taxi along the street and you have to stop at stop signs for them to pass you. It's very strange. The homes are pretty basic but I guess because you have a huge glorified barn on yoru property and a hobby plane, every house is like a minimum $3mm.

I go to that neighborhood to carpool for school or birthday parties or what have you and I think to myself it's the riskiest and most insane thing a lawyer-by-day or run of the mill orthodontist could ever do. It feels like not a matter of when but if, but maybe I'm just a big baby and/or too poor to understand.

I live close to one of these neighborhoods. The land on the other side of their runway is part of a Middle School/High School complex. When my kids were little I coached soccer and t-ball on sports fields behind the schools (the land between the schools and the runway). Any time a plane took off or landed all field activity would stop as kids and dads would stop what they were doing to watch the airplanes.

Or if they were CEOs….then they deserved it.

What does the Oregon Trail have to do with any of this?

I have no desire to ever fly in a small plane or a helicopter.

Especially not from Jersey to San Diego. Knock yourself out, Earhart. I'll grab a coach seat on the next Southwest flight.

First few responses are a pretty good encapsulation of how broken brained our politics has become.

The current presidential administration does broken brained shit like this dozens of times on a daily basis, but it's a few Surly posters that are the real problem in this country.

The really hard part is going to be keeping the pretty stewardess calm.

But what if there was 1 gorilla on the plane?

Is it hard being this much of a pussy?

Seriously, you have made this post so many times and it never makes you look cool or smart.

One day I hope to be almost as smart as you.

Maybe his playstyle was similar to mine in the early/mid 90's. I would seek out landmarks (like the Golden Gate bridge) and intentionally crash into them.

Shapiro also owned a flight school, Velocity Aviation.

They should probably be reaching out to Groupon about right now, considering….

When my dad was in the navy in the early 90’s we lived in this neighborhood, about 10-houses away from the crash site. So, this hits close to old home.

i haven’t looked much into it yet and I’m sure it ends up being mostly pilot error but this is a bummer

Who had Top Gun on original Nintendo? That shit was great.

Landing in that game is probably harder than landing an actual fighter jet.

Attempting to land in that game was the stuff of nightmares
