Sinner was cruising and your previous post made it look like it was over. Then I wrote my Sunday morning column and made my way to my TV to see that Álcaraz was serving to take it to a tie-breaker in the 2nd. 😳 Carlos is winning this match.

If it goes 5, Álcaraz is winning. 1) This is Sinner’s 2nd tournament back after a 3 month ban (layoff). 2) Sinner has never won a match that has gone longer than 3 hrs 50 mins. (Currently the match is 3 hrs 25 mins.) Edited June 8Jun 8 by Napoleon
June 8Jun 8 How the fuck have they been playing for 3.5 hours at this level and Alvarez barely looks like he has broken a sweat? I just got back from a bike ride at the end of the third set and just now cooled down.

June 8Jun 8 Carlitos and I are built different(ly). Holy shit he buckled down at 0-40 Championship Point(s). I would have double faulted.

Immediately after sinner broke alcaraz I threw a small entertainment wager on alcaraz at +600. When it was alcaraz serving 0-40,the odds got to +2800. I did not double down.

I did not double down. I don’t bet, because I have a habit of losing, but I could have used $100 to pay for a lot of my daily expenses this summer as I bounce around Europe visiting friends in Germany, England, Wales, France, and maybe Spain, Portugal, Italy, & Switzerland. (Got a 2 month Eurail pass and want to see as many expat friends as possible from my days in South America.) +2800 Holy fucking shit!

He should win Wimbledon. Sinner is like a German tennis robot. Built to hit every shot perfectly, but moves with little grace when not playing a point.

I hate not having electronic line calls in tennis 🎾, and hate that baseball ⚾️ & softball 🥎 still have humans calling balls & strikes as well.
June 8Jun 8 That incorrect call on Álcaraz’s serve seems to have injected a lot of fire into Sinner. Are you fucking kidding me on Carlos’ volley drop shot on the first point?!? 🤯
June 8Jun 8 12 minutes ago, cmontexas said: Unbelievable match even had the womenfolk interested Before or after Álcaraz took off his shirt after the match. I recall many a woman were quite interested when Nadal used to change shirts during the match. Sinner’s speech could have come after losing a 250 tournament 6-2 6-2. NIKE has a theme this tournament. Same clothes, different colors.
June 8Jun 8 That was amazing. Enjoyed watching Coco too. It’s fun to witness the beginning/early stages of the next of the greatest to play the game. So inspiring to see Carlos dig deep and find it like that. Sinner did the same late too. Just undeniably incredible to see their tenacity and focus. Inspiring.

That out of the air cross court forehand late was just unreal. He had some defensive digs that are nothing short of impossible except for him.
June 8Jun 8 just wrapping up on the dvr. ho-lee-shit. 👀 they will be talking about this one for decades. this has got to be the best comeback i’ve ever witnessed in a grand slam final. alcaraz you legend!!!
June 9Jun 9 Yep he has the chance to be a GOAT. His defense is next level. Nadal level. Just grinds you the fuck down then he punishes you with angles and drop shots and down right wizardry.

June 9Jun 9 Carlitos celebrating with the “ballkids”… Looks like the ballgirls told the ballboys the wrong time & place for Carlitos’ parade through with the trophy 🏆. Not a single ballboy in sight.
June 9Jun 9 The on court celebration he had was composed mostly of ballboys so maybe that's where they were.
June 9Jun 9 so in the open era(47 years) only 9 players have come from 2 sets down to win a grand slam. 5 have happened since 2020(Thiem, Sinner, Alcaraz, Nadal, Joker). before that there were only 4, all at French. 2004 Gaudio 1999 Agassi 1984 Lendl 1974 Borg 6 of the 9 have been at the French. basically you have a 5% chance of winning down 2 sets.

The Thiem vs Zverev match was the polar opposite of yesterday’s match. Djokavic had been disqualified for smack a ball in anger that had hit a line judge in the throat. (The line judge appeared to make a meal of it, but Novak was being a bitch, so fuck him.) And the final should have been a straight sets affair, but Zverev was too scared to win it. Only problem was that Thiem wasn’t playing well and then started cramping on top of that. The final turned into a cripple fight and no matter how shitty the match got, someone had to win it, because that’s how tennis works. Finally Zverev showed that he didn’t want to win it even more than the cramping Thiem. This was probably the one grand slam final in the open era where a woman could have actually won the men’s title.

June 9Jun 9 I was looking at “Facebook stories” and a friend since childhood, who has always been in a different economic bracket than I, posted a few photos from her Sunday. She’s in Paris with a couple of friends and one of the friend’s daughter and they went to see a tennis match yesterday. Side Note #1: Cropped & marked out to protect the non-Surly from Surly. You can see the GREEN shirt & b/w striped shirt on the left. Clearly Señor Álcaraz. They got a photo in front of Patrick before the match. Side Note #2: Patrick dated one of my classmate’s sister while the two were at Stanford. On one visit to Dallas, Patrick played indoor soccer with our summer team. (He wasn’t very good, but that was understandable.) That final… I want to watch it again today. You can pick highlights to watch, but from when I started watching (at about 6-5 in the 2nd set), it seemed like every game was filled with highlights and amazing shots. This was insane level tennis for 5 1/2 hours. Edited June 9Jun 9 by Napoleon
