I read and read and read about it since it's the focus of what I'm doing with my life. One recurring theme is that none of them that came home look at themselves as heroes. It was their brother that didn't make it back. I could post some of the lesser known stories of soldiers from the Pacific War, but it gets so heavy at times reading about young men who gave the last full measure of their life thousands of miles from home on islands they had never heard of until they were running through the surf and up onto a beach. The two best friends from Texas at Tarawa that lost their lives in the first 10 minutes or so of the battle. A girlfriend back home that never, ever got over the death of one of them. War is awful and if we remember nothing else, we should remember that young men lost their lives in a war 80 years ago so that we wouldn't have to do it all over again one day. War is never the answer. If it is everyone has failed, and it will be another generation lamenting the loss of young men and women on some far away battlefield fighting an old person's war.
May 27May 27 and yet we have been at war in some fashion or another from 1990 to 2021. That's 2 generations at a minimum, and possibly 3 depending upon ages. We have maintained an all volunteer force since 1974.
