May 30May 30 I have a theory on guys like Walker that he may cause more problems for big boy teams who don’t see 84 MPH fastballs…ever? But he may not be as effective against teams from the Southland who see that velo more often. We’ll see. HCU also starts quite a few left handed bats so it could still be a good spot for him regardless. Edited May 30May 30 by Hookem2147
May 30May 30 Popular Post Threw down $15 for a d1 subscription for the month. Austin regional preview Spoiler Regional host Texas has made serious waves in Jim Schlossnagle’s first season in Austin, winning the SEC by two full games and showcasing an elite backend of the bullpen led by Max Grubbs and Dylan Volantis. UTSA put together a consistent and strong regular season and are very offensive with Mason Lytle, James Taussig and others leading the charge, while there’s apparently no such thing as a rebuilding campaign in Manhattan, Kan. K-State reached the NCAA Super Regional round last season, and despite losing several key cogs from that team, has continued to experience success this spring. Maximus Martin, in particular, has had a monster offensive campaign. As for HCU, the Huskies are in the NCAA tournament in just Clay VanderLaan’s first season as the head man. VanderLaan previously served as an assistant under previous head coach Lance Berkman, and the Huskies are not some sort of one-weekend wonder. They’ve been a solid club throughout the season. Galvan would be a good one for Texas, while Lytle and even James Taussig are good options for UTSA, But I’ll focus on two guys in particular — Texas slugger Ethan Mendoza and Kansas State’s Keegan O’Connor. Mendoza is a hit machine for the Longhorns and has been clutch the entire season — he’s hitting .330 with 68 hits on the season, while O’Connor is a big bopper for the Wildcats with 14 doubles, 16 homers and 56 RBIs. Both sluggers command your attention when they’re at the plate. Best Hitter: Mason Lytle, UTSA I wrote a little bit about him in another section, but Lytle, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound, senior, continues to have a strong offensive campaign for this hard-nosed Roadrunners club. Lytle enters the weekend with some strong statistics in several areas. For instance, he’s hitting .372 with 21 doubles, nine homers and 65 RBIs, while he also can make things happen on the bases with 16 stolen bases out of 21 attempts. The other thing I love about Lytle is that he sees pitches very well. He only has 18 strikeouts this season as compared to 22 walks. He sets the tone for this UTSA offense. Best Defensive Player: Rylan Galvan, Texas There are plenty of strong defenders in this regional, but I always resort to the most important position on the field — the catcher position. There, Galvan has become one of the premier backstops in the country. In addition to having a strong arm, Galvan is a brick wall behind the plate and does a terrific job of ‘stealing’ pitches with his ability to frame the ball. Galvan has total control of the field is a key leader for this Texas team. Best Pitcher: Dylan Volantis, Texas We already wrote plenty about Volantis in our section on the Texas bullpen below, but he’s the X-factor and the most consistent piece of this Longhorns’ team. The only thing to potentially watch with Volantis is that teams have seemed to see him a bit better over the last couple of weeks. But he’s still putting up video game numbers out of the backend of the bullpen. From talking to opposing coaches about his overall approach and stuff, teams have a tough time picking up the fastball, cutter and slider from the same up top arm angle. It’ll be interesting to see how he performs in his postseason debut. X-Factor: SS Maximus Martin, Kansas State Kansas State is no stranger to making serious noise in an SEC regional. Just look back at last season when the Wildcats won the Fayetteville Regional. They hope lightning strikes twice this weekend, but for that to happen, someone like Martin will need to have a massive weekend at the plate. Martin has evolved into one of the premier sluggers in the sport, hitting an impressive .332 with 18 doubles, 14 homers and 54 RBIs, while also tallying a 1.064 OPS. Typically, the rest of the offense gets on a roll when Martin is clicking. Best Starting Rotation: Texas Even with Spencer out and Ruger Riojas being good but not great, I think I still narrowly lean the Longhorns here. Lefthander Luke Harrison has evolved into a premier arm with a fastball up to 91-92, but also with very good secondary stuff. He has a 2.98 ERA in 66.1 innings of work, along with 70 strikeouts and 23 walks, while Riojas, whose numbers are slightly inflated by a horrible start against Florida, has a nasty overall arsenal of four pitches and has 56 strikeouts and 19 walks in 61.2 innings of work. The Longhorns don’t have a ‘true’ No. 3 starter right now, but lefty Kade Bing should be good enough to beat HCU and Max Grubbs, if needed, could start. Of course, one must remember that Grubbs was UT’s Friday night starter just a season ago. Best Bullpen: Texas The Longhorns have one of the top two or three freshmen in college baseball at the backend of the bullpen in lefthander Dylan Volantis. Volantis has put together outrageous numbers so far this season, tallying a 1.99 ERA in 45.1 innings with 12 saves, 68 strikeouts and 12 walks. What’s mind-blowing about his stuff is that he has induced a whiff rate of 47% (per Synergy) with the curveball, a 54% whiff rate with the slider, and a 49% whiff rate with the cutter. Max Grubbs is another key arm out of the bullpen, tallying a 2.50 ERA in 20 innings, while also striking out 60 and walking 13, while hard-throwing Thomas Burns has been a key cog at times. Burns is up to 98-99 mph with his fastball, but he’s at his best when he’s landing the wicked slider for strikes. Best Offensive Team: UTSA Host Texas is much better offensively than the numbers would indicate, especially if guys like Jalin Flores and Rylan Galvan are clicking this weekend. However, I am giving the offensive edge in this tournament to American champ UTSA. The Roadrunners are a feisty, relentless offensive lineup that has some strong pieces atop the lineup. Mason Lytle is hitting .372 with 21 doubles, nine homers and 65 RBIs, Jordan Ballin and Norris McClure are each hitting over .350 and the trio of Andrew Stucky, Drew Detlefsen and James Taussig are incredibly dangerous. Taussig has smacked 13 doubles and knocked in 60 runs, Stucky is hitting .335 with 15 doubles and six homers and Detlefsen is the leading home run hitter on this team with 13 bombs to go with 18 doubles. UTSA has impressive balance from an offensive standpoint. Best Defensive Team: Texas Each team in this regional, for the most part, plays a solid brand of defense. We’re giving the overall edge to the Longhorns, however. Texas has perhaps the premier catcher in college baseball this season in Rylan Galvan, who has taken an incredible step forward this season. The outfield is in solid shape, while Jalin Flores is typically very good up the middle and first baseman Kimble Schuessler has been rock solid at his position. Texas is one of those teams that will absolutely make you beat them. They are not going to boot the ball around and give you second chances. No. 1 Seed Win Probability (1-10): 7. It’s hard to bet against the Longhorns in a Regional in Austin, but this tournament will get interesting if one of these teams can extend UT to Monday. The reason? The Longhorns lost starting pitcher and lefthander Jared Spencer to a season-ending injury several weeks ago, and that puts at least just a bit of strain on the pitching staff should this regional go to a fourth day. That’s the recipe for success against the host Longhorns. With that said, conventional wisdom suggests Jim Schlossnagle will have the Longhorns dialed up and locked in offensively, while they still have plenty of strong pitching options with Max Grubbs, Dylan Volantis, Thomas Burns and others leading the bullpen, and Ruger Riojas and Luke Harrison headlining the weekend rotation. Frisky 4-seed Factor (1-10): 2. Texas played Houston Christian earlier this season in midweek action and cruised to a victory. Now, the Longhorns get the Huskies with their weekend rotation in tow. An upset in this game would be a massive surprise to say the least. With that said, there are some intriguing pieces to watch with this HCU club. Parker Edwards is not a particularly overpowering pitcher with just 69 strikeouts in 84.2 innings of work, but he has been a consistent piece on the weekend, while offensively, Jackson Walker, Rhett Hendricks and two-way talent Edwards are the primary guys to watch. Walker is hitting .325 with an OBP over .400, Hendricks is hitting .327 with nine doubles and six homers and Edwards is hitting .296 with 15 doubles, nine homers and 47 RBIs. Never say never in the NCAA tournament, but a first-round upset is quite improbable. I do not miss residential construction at all, nightmare fuel to do business in a world filled with contractors who say shit like that.... and their work is always dog shit. For those amazed by this resurrection of the fence, Turner construction is building the hospital, if UT calls them about anything, they will move fast to fix. Probably was nothing for them, those people are used to organizing huge job sites, fixing a fence that blew over in a 24 hour window is easy, probably a nice break for whatever manager was tasked with this.
