The staff also couldn’t stop throwing cock-shots or hitting them. Base running was atrocious. Fielding was also bad. Schloss even got out coached in certain points. The point is the talent in the lineup was also not fielding, pitching or running the bases well either. You can’t just be hyper focused on one facet of the game when the collapse post Aggie was in all phases.
June 2Jun 2 UTSA was just more sound defensively and fundamentally. They made more 50/50 plays than Texas did. Plays that when it’s all said and done don’t go down as errors if you don’t make them but change the game if you do. Flores was on the shit end of several of those on Saturday night. Galvan trying to get back and tag on the ball Kimble hit to right center when there was no reason too. Texas overall had more baserunners than UTSA, just didn’t make the plays when it mattered most. Schloss’ unwillingness to move Flores and Gasparino down the order, or at the very least separate them, until it was too late, hurt this team mightily down the stretch.

There is a place for the occasional bunt but the Augie/Gus small ball is not a good strategy for scoring runs regularly Bullshit It is still fucking baseball. If the first two guys get on you should bunt every time no matter who is at the plate. It worked back then and works now.

I think there’s still at least something to be said about putting pressure on the defense, especially in college, but the Augie/Gus style of small ball is long gone and should be. It simply generates fewer runs.

June 3Jun 3 Anybody else baffled how Schuessler could be such a bad catcher but one of the best defensive 1B I can remember? The dude was awesome over there this year.

June 3Jun 3 Did Augie play small ball during the regular season or get more conservative during must win postseason games? I recall him playing small ball regularly in our postseason games and putting a lot of pressure on our opponents early in games.

My recollection is that he used small ball pretty selectively, when we needed to manufacture a run, and also sometimes as a psychological thing with a particular player, e.g. boost them in a slump, give them a dose of humility. I think you are probably right that there was a tad more small ball in the post-season, because runs could be harder to come by.

If we got the leadoff man on, we bunted him over 99% of the time.
June 3Jun 3 Small ball only works when pitching staff is really good and can consistently throw up zeros. Our pitching staff as good as it was, was not that

This is the biggest reason small ball wouldn’t have worked well for us this year. We had far too many strikeouts and routine pop ups. I like some small ball in college to put pressure on the defense to make plays, but you have to follow it up with base hits or well placed ground balls
June 3Jun 3 Yeah, this team was much more likely to get a home run or extra base hit than a timely single.
June 3Jun 3 We really need to find a regular 3 man rotation again. We almost had it this year with Spencer-Harrison-Flores for awhile but then that fell apart.

Yeah for awhile we held several NCAA sacrifice hit records until UC Irvine broke most of them. I think we still hold the record for most sacrifice hits in a single game from the 2009 Super Regional against TCU (the good Super Regional against TCU, not the disaster of the following season). The moneyball fans would be losing their minds in game threads all season "the analytics say you score more with a runner on first and nobody out!!111" Edited June 3Jun 3 by Valmy77
June 3Jun 3 Trying to compare the style Augie played to today is pretty useless because this era of baseball is completely different. Different bats, balls, fences have been moved in at the Disch, etc. The 2005 national title team hit 56 homers in 72 games. We had 112 in 60 games last year and 85 in 58 games this year. Hell, the 2011 Omaha team hit 17 home runs the whole damn season after they changed the bats.

Just a terrible offensive team with a god-tier pitching staff. Then in 2012 and 2013 we remained terrible at offense and the pitching was also bad. 2005 was a good hitting team at what they did. They get on base, get bunted over, and then bring them home. They were a small ball machine. And had great pitching as well.
