I don't think it's going to really hit me until we start to play a match and he's not there. Life can be so beautiful and so very cruel. I feel so terrible that his kids grow up without a father. I know the club will honor him well when the time is right.

“#20 in memory of #20 Diogo Jota”

or something along those lines.

Liverpool’s No 20 shirt permanently retired in honour of Diogo Jota. Decision taken after consultation with Jota's wife Rute and other family members. Applies to the club at all levels, including men’s, women’s and academy teams. https://t.co/PM4Aohr3tj

🚨 Liverpool make approach to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. #LFC say no formal bid + well aware #NUFC stance has always been: not for sale. But communicated interest in deal for 25yo Sweden international worth in region of £120m @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/qffFlyq9w3

Wasting no time

🚨 Liverpool contact Eintracht Frankfurt over possible move for Hugo Ekitike. #LFC working on 23yo #SGE forward, having also approached Newcastle for Alexander Isak. #NUFC want to keep 25yo + Ekitike interest ongoing. W/ @SebSB @ChrisDHWaugh @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/UBUqsV1dCj

The leverage play by Hughes/Edwards here is fascinating. If Isak is committed to a possible extension, then I see no reason for them to entertain us & they’d be fine to let us end up with Ekitike. If Isak is not committed long-term and has wandering eyes for clubs with larger ambitions, then I feel like the rational thing to do is sell Isak at his peak value now and then sign up Ekitike to a 6-7 year deal as his replacement? Isak’s value is only going to depreciate in the next 1-2 years as it comes due…

The only risk that we’re taking here is that Ekitike feels spurned that we’re clearly publicly announcing him as a second fiddle priority. But if it comes down to us vs. Newcastle for his signature, I’m hard-pressed to believe he wouldn’t want to sign up to play for the PL Champions as their first-team striker with Wirtz and Salah feeding him…the alternative is being second striker to Isak.

A special mural tribute to Diogo Jota nearby Anfield, created by artist John Culshaw, has now been completed ❤️

Sounds like Ekiteke should close in the next couple of days unless Isak raises hell. Happy with either.

Sell Diaz and go all in on Rodrygo.

🚨💣 BREAKING: Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool, here we go! Deal in place for fee over €90m for the French striker to join from Eintracht Frankfurt, potentially reaching €95m. Six year deal for Ekitike, valid until June 2031; he only wanted Liverpool move. New striker for Slot 🇫🇷

Díaz not in the squad today. I think he’s on the move shortly. Could imagine Liverpool still buying two more forward / winger-profiles if Nunez and Chiesa are also off.

He's on the roster for the traveling squad to Asia. Obviously, he could still be sold but I don't think anything's imminent.

Highlights from the match today…Wirtz and Frimpong will do just fine, thanks!

And the extended for those who want more:

So much speed and technical ability. Frimpong could have had three assists (playing at left wing). Wirtz had two. Rio and Trey Nyoni will get minutes sooner rather than later. Rio looks like our starting LW in a couple years. Turns 17 next month.

#85

Part of me doesn’t even want to buy another winger just to keep a spot open for Rio…but he’s still probably 1-2 years away realistically. Nyoni, similarly, is a stud…he seems like someone who can be a backup #6 and get Grav some rest at the end of games. He’s so smooth on the ball.

Wirtz + Salah is unfair in the same lineup.

excited to see what Ekitike brings from the link up side of things.

#87

Darwin had a hat trick in 20 minutes. If Wirtz could unlock Nunez's potential, it would be worth keeping him. I bet Slot waits a bit to sell Nunez until he sees more. I bet trainings just have to be incredible sights to witness.

Nunez is a confidence player. Has all the talent in the world and if we sell him to Italy/Saudi this summer I expect him to crush it. 99% of his underperformance is due to what happens between his ears.

regarding training this quote got me hyped:

Florian Wirtz has blown away his teammates in training. Luca Stephenson said “he’s never seen anything like this in his life”

Hugo Ekitike will undergo medical and then plan is to fly out to Hong Kong to link up with #LFC squad. Six-year contract. It’s a £79m deal. £69m is guaranteed (some reports had suggested higher). Then potentially a further £10m in add ons. https://t.co/OTTZB6kDGU

It’s a lot of money for a guy who doesn’t even have a single senior cap for France yet, but…

He looks to have an incredible ceiling; his technicality/ball skills are insane for a guy of his size and he looks to have good link-up play and vision which will do wonders for this team under Slot. At this point, I’m not doubting Edwards’ supercomputer (and Hughes, by extension).

Olise didn’t have a France cap when he moved to Bayern. France is loaded and they will still start Giroud when he is 65 years old.

#92

No doubt there’s a complex pathway to first-team football in France, although to think that a player with 44 senior-level club goals in his career can be our (third-highest?) record signing! The market is just crazy; I’m just glad FSG is opening up their wallet to give Slot what he wants.

#93
We have reached an agreement for the transfer of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, subject to international clearance 😎

#95

We took their Isak replacement away so probably not. It won't be cheap but FSG seem to not care this offseason. He's not going on their summer tour but that's supposedly because he has a thigh injury.

#96
🚨 Alexander Isak wants to leave Newcastle United. Absence from Celtic friendly + Asia tour 25yo’s preference. #NUFC keen for Sweden international striker to stay on improved deal but also exploring potential replacements @TheAthleticFC after @CraigHope_DM https://t.co/G0iGNiJPrC

Ornstein confirms…all the smoke points to us putting in a bid if Newcastle is willing to play ball. Would be extreme succession planning for Salah and we’d likely really need to expedite exits for Díaz, Nunez, Elliott, etc. If they actually tried for this, then the winger position becomes a little odd with Gakpo as the only senior-level left winger in the squad.

No Díaz or Nunez in the squad at all after traveling and training…those must be far along. Gomez sent home to Liverpool with Achilles injury. We probably need to buy 2 CBs because you cannot count on his health whatsoever.

The best ability is availability. Joe’s had rotten luck with injuries during his LFC career (Harry Kane tearing up his ankle with a slide tackle in a fucking practice for England).

That first half against Milan is everything a preseason friendly should be. No defense and full on LEEEEEEEEEROY JENKINS
