I don't think so.  I think he just sang it over a backing track that the producers had already recorded.  Did he overdub the solo maybe?
 

Today I learned his actual name was "Rick Zehringer".

My second favorite part of that video is the guy playing marimba in full rock garb. 

There seems to be some confusion about the track in the video -- it's apparently the McCoys' audio dubbed on the solo Derringer video.  Derringer's solo track had much more of an island vibe, which matches the instrumentation seen in the clip (marimba, steel drums).

AND, it's Edgar Winter on the marimba (audio, not the guy shown in the video).  Crazy back story.  Here's the solo version:

“Summer Lovin’” from the movie “Grease” apparently completely stole the opening riff from “Hang On Sloopy”.
