May 28May 28 I knew of him mostly through his work with Johnny and Edgar Winter, but he seemingly worked with everyone. RIP. https://apnews.com/article/rick-derringer-dies-2b38685f4c97e7a9882f306628413924
May 28May 28 Two things I knew: "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" Solo on Weird Al's "Eat it." One thing I learned yesterday: Guitar on "Hang on Sloopy"
May 28May 28 12 minutes ago, Paul Wesley said: Guitar on "Hang on Sloopy" I don't think so. I think he just sang it over a backing track that the producers had already recorded. Did he overdub the solo maybe? Today I learned his actual name was "Rick Zehringer".
May 28May 28 My second favorite part of that video is the guy playing marimba in full rock garb. There seems to be some confusion about the track in the video -- it's apparently the McCoys' audio dubbed on the solo Derringer video. Derringer's solo track had much more of an island vibe, which matches the instrumentation seen in the clip (marimba, steel drums). AND, it's Edgar Winter on the marimba (audio, not the guy shown in the video). Crazy back story. Here's the solo version: Edited May 28May 28 by jimmyjazz
May 29May 29 “Summer Lovin’” from the movie “Grease” apparently completely stole the opening riff from “Hang On Sloopy”.
