I think "Everlong" and maybe "Monkeywrench" could eventually be thought of as Top 100 rock songs. Obviously plenty would disagree. I don't think The Killers have a song in that orbit.
May 30May 30 I’m not commenting at all on complexity or musicianship because in this context I do not care, but I think that Mr Brightside and When We Were Young would easily fall into that discussion at the same tier as those Foo Fighters songs. If we’re talking about influence and cultural impact.

Mr. Brightside was everywhere, I still hear it. I also think while a fun song, Monkeywrench is kind of a blip of history relatively speaking. I just actually looked up 2004 songs out of curiosity, Somebody Told Me was a really big song I remember. Slither also dropped from Velvet Revolver that year. That whole era was a pretty big wasteland for me tbh. Social Distortion put out Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell in maybe '05? Audioslave seems about that time as well.

May 30May 30 Foo Fighters. I haven't been really crazy about anything The Killers have done since their opener. Sam's Town was ok. The Man is a good song.

Many a drunken party with both of those songs, littered with more and more guitar string plinking noises as the night wore on.

May 31May 31 Foo Fighters if I had to pick. But I don't pay much attention to either band anymore. I was more into Foo at one point than I was ever into Killers. I have purchased like 3 or 4 Foo albums and 1 Killers album in my life. I liked Hot Fuss when it came out, and Mr. Brightside is one of my go-to Karaoke songs, but I couldn't have even named a second Killers album until I popped in here and was reminded about Sam's Town. Also Don't Shoot Me Santa is a great Christmas song. 17 hours ago, G650 said: Yeah I don't doubt you, I'm just not familiar with it. Mr. Brightside was everywhere, I still hear it. Pinback put out a great album that year, too. Edited May 31May 31 by CurlyDumps

May 31May 31 Interpol is better than both of them multiplied by 10. Foo Fighters really only has one song I seek out, Down in the Park, is a cover. Killers are more interesting than FF to me. Archers of Loaf mutherfuckers!!! Edited May 31May 31 by Nivek

May 31May 31 That Franz Ferdinand album was also summer ‘04. And American Idiot. i totally get hating/not digging Modest Mouse, but Lonesome Crowded Wesr, Moon and Antarctica, and Good News are all more important to me than any album from the Killers or Foo Fighters. summer 04 was also the… Rilo Kiley album with Portions for Foxes. I am excited about seeing Rilo Kiley this year.

June 3Jun 3 The foo fighters are a legitimate candidate for the worst highly successful band ever. I enjoy a killers song when I randomly hear one.
June 3Jun 3 Take it FWIW, but as a data point for who has the “biggest song” and more relevance to the current landscape, the Killers most played song on Spotify has over 1 billion more streams than the Foo’s. And over 6 million more monthly listeners.
June 3Jun 3 Everlong > Mr Brightside Also, I don't care. Grohl was a legend, he shoulda kept it in his pants. I've heard some other not nice things about him but IDK if those are true. I'm not sure why Modest Mouse is out here catching strays though.

It's a symptom of a culture which became professional victims that allowed events to happen to it, versus actively controlling them. There's a laundry list of bands of this ilk, Korn was the the first real big one that was arresting in their wimpiness, but it crossed myriad genres and styles.

I'm trying not to take the bait with the generational culture war part of this post, but taking your premise at face value, wouldn't Nirvana be the first big band that was "arresting in their wimpiness"?

I mean, I don't really consider it generational. It was just prevailing culture for a period of time, I see generally a shift over the past 5 or 10 years, if not back to more aggression, at least less passivity. Probably more nihilism now than anything.

He's the one Who likes all our pretty songs And he likes to sing along And he likes to shoot his gun But he don't know what it means You're right I didn't, I was like 7 when Kurt died. I've seen Modest Mouse live lots of times though and I wouldn't consider them limp, passive, or wimpy either. I'm not a Nirvana hater by any means, I was just using G650's framing. It seems like he was identifying when popular rock bands started being more openly disaffected and vulnerable. If that shift did happen, it had to have started when Nirvana was the biggest band in the world in the early 90s, well before the time period he was identifying.

The passivity of letting things happen to you versus positive action of controlling events and your own mental/spiritual/whatever condition. As mentioned it was a a broader culture thing that found expression in music as well. The most concise way I've found to express it is it's "oh poor me" vs. "Imma punch you in the fucking face".
June 4Jun 4 I’m really not a lyrics guy and I haven’t spent a lot of time pondering what is meant by a guy with teeth like god’s shoeshine getting another orange Julius or whatever but at this point I’m curious - what about Modest Mouse makes them seem like passive victims? This would make sense to me if we were dissecting Bright Eyes, I don’t quite follow for Modest Mouse.
